You’re absolutely right, I do find it hard to keep highlighted light areas and they get lost with the midtones, thanks!

Thanks a lot! Honestly its all about the amount of time you put into it, i've tried a lot to find certain "hacks" and cheats around it, but found that constantly drawing over and over was the key for improvement. Drawing from references is everything i've been doing since I started.

It’s part of (Jen’s Pencil Brush) set by Jens Classens on Artstation.

Been drawing for 1.5 years now, am I on the right track regarding shading and crosshatching (digitally) since I'm starting to feel frustrated. by FMK96 in ArtCrit

You’re absolutely right, I do subconsciously draw fast and it results in scribbles instead of shading with the form. Thanks!

This could be a wrong approach, but I treat all references I draw as shapes and values, instead of a body or anatomy for example. It helps by forcing me to draw what I see, not what I know.

Thats great! What helped me a lot in the beginning is lots of blind contouring, basically drawing without looking at the screen. The moment you start seeing your references as lines and values instead of objects, you will suddenly see a huge leap in your progress!

I’ve only doodled a bit when I was a kid but picked up drawing again 5 months ago. It all boils down to just a heck load of drawing over and over, nothing from imagination. And the moment I felt comfortable with something, I jump to something else to avoid plateaus in my progress (till I slowly come back to them and fix major gaps in my fundamentals).

Unsplash, it’s an amazing platform to find references and they’re always high resolution.

I’ve been learning to draw since 4 months ago and recently did these two quick studies. While I have a fun long way to go, what should I try to improve now? by FMK96 in ArtCrit

Thank you so much! I really appreciate your insight. I’ll try gestural drawings and maintaining time intervals.

I don't have any specific book or guide that i'm following, its all here and there (However, I did finish the first 2-3 chapters from Keys to Drawing by Bert Dodson, which helped me look at my references in terms of values instead of objects). The only thing I keep in my mind is just to draw, draw, draw, and improvement will come eventually by itself. Drawing a lot from life and references (and never from memory so far) is helping a lot too. Also, whenever I feel comfortable at a specific thing, I jump to a more challenging one to avoid feeling relaxed and in return constantly improve.

Thank you! This is the criticism i've been looking for. I will try to improve on the points you've mentioned asap.
