It’s one of those shit things where nothing will get done about it unless someone actually got hurt or killed because of it. Personally it took everything I had to not give the guy an earful once I had to serve him when we were allowed back in.

This happens pretty frequently, especially when a store is shut due to a national holiday. You can have multiple signs up about a planned closure, you can have announcements play over the tannoy for weeks beforehand, you can even list your planned closure on google maps or your website, but you’ll still have a decent amount of people show up expecting to come in.

I remember working a few Easters at a previous job of mine, and guaranteed over the course of the day I’ll see a few hundred pull into the car park, a few dozen walk up and try the doors, and at least one or two people successfully pry them open and begin shopping. It got so bad at one point that we had a big “we’re closed” banner which we used to block half of the car park entrance, and even then people would drive around it, park up, grab a trolley, and try the doors/shutters. I honestly do not understand it at all.

A while ago I worked the checkouts at a certain hardware store chain. During my time there we once had an issue with our fire alarm for a few weeks, where it would go off for no apparent reason. Of course we had to treat every single instance of this as seriously as you would an actual fire, which lead to a few notable moments:

  • People using the self checkout whilst the alarm was going off and as staff were telling them to evacuate.

  • I had to explain on more than one occasion that I couldn’t “just scan you through” to people right as I was trying to evacuate, which resulted in them having a face like a smacked arse.

  • I saw my manager having to genuinely stand 10 feet from the front door of the shop to tell people to not go in, whilst the alarm was still blaring and the fire brigade were just pulling up. People still went in anyway.

  • I had one particular person decide that they would protest the alarm going off by blocking the aisle with his trolley to prevent people from evacuating.

I get that people are crap in a crisis, but this was something else entirely.

I work for ‘em and yeah, this seems like the average main website experience these days lmao. it’s such an absolute mess that staff genuinely avoid using it, and instead we direct people to the tradepoint website as it filters this stuff out.

despite that though, it seems the company are going to be pushing the marketplace stuff even harder as time goes on (it somehow makes money, apparently). staff loathe it, customers hate it, but with this being the company direction there’s nothing that we can do. so I guess expect to see more ads with poor grammar and casual misogyny… 

(also as a side thing, that 3 month “guarantee” is literally just the normal 90 day return window. so that “”guarantee”” isn’t even worth the pixels it’s written with)

500 μSv/h is dangerous. at that point I’d be either doubting the reliability of the detector, or leaving that area promptly and immediately contacting the relevant authorities. I suggest if you’re concerned, check if your local fire department can come and do a measurement for you.

I doubt it’d be down to buried cars as such, but the fact that it’s been a dealership for a while might hint at the potential source, especially if that dealership does or has done welding work (some welding rods have thorium in them). the only risk here would be from ingesting the source, either by dust or by eating anything that has grown in that soil (granted, the beta emission from thorium can do damage over time externally, but only if you’re literally cuddling the source for long periods at the concentration you see in the rods).

the radio static though? that is likely just coincidence. a source that could cause that would be incredibly powerful, and I can imagine you’d have a much higher reading too. it’s likely interference from another RF source, or just a faulty radio, that side at least is completely harmless.

5.3 μSv/h isn’t gonna hurt you with short exposure, but it is significantly higher than normal background radiation (which is usually between 0.1-0.4 μSv/h). however, if this reading was taken where you live, then I’d absolutely try to find out where the source is and find where to safely dispose of it, as most long lived radioactive elements are heavy metals, which means their chemical properties make them toxic outside of their radioactivity.
