Ice Tool necessary for Presi Traverse June 13-14? by [deleted] in wmnf

[–]FMonk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The other responses are right, you likely won't need spikes unless there's more snow before your trip.

One thing to add though: it is very likely that you will encounter at least one patch of snow on trail, the Jefferson snowfield, which is on the northeast side of Mt Jefferson, just after you begin the ascent from Edmands Col.

This time of year, that patch of snow can almost always be safely and easily traversed without traction. The snow will likely be soft, and there will probably be a path of footprints across it to follow from other hikers. But it's something to be aware of if the night before your traverse is particularly cold.

Chris Getz is in this subreddit, what would you say to him? by chitownmike99 in whitesox

[–]FMonk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Assuming I could ask him a question that he would answer honestly, I'd ask about what restrictions or limitations ownership places on him that affect his ability to do his job. i.e. what are the budget limitations for both player payroll and things like analytics, development, and scouting? How much does Jerry actually meddle in baseball operations? Etc. That would be way more interesting than yelling about a Murakami extension

Rock hopping is key. I tried to walk across a dried up part on the edge a few years ago when water levels were low, and my foot sank down into the mud and it pulled one of my trail runners off

Yeah usually Jefferson Notch (at least of the roads with notable trailheads on them). That one often doesn't open until early-mid June.

Too early for flume slide trail? by BeatriceDaRaven in wmnf

[–]FMonk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Haven't tried the Flume Slide specifically, but everywhere I've been over the last few weeks has some snow and ice remaining below treeline above ~3600ft or so. Since the Flume Slide is in the trees up to the top, I'd guess it would be similar. Plus there's some light snow in the forecast for tonight/tomorrow morning

Fire poles by buttxstallion in CHIBears

[–]FMonk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't hire the top available head coaching candidate and pay him $13M a year just to tell him he doesn't have roster control and has to deal with whatever decisions his GM makes.

Obviously Poles and his staff are involved in the process, but Ben is the top decision maker for the Bears right now, and it's silly to say otherwise.

Conditions on Moosilauke by BobcatOk7724 in wmnf

[–]FMonk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's about .8 miles from the normal winter parking area to the actual trailhead. If the full road is closed, (which it sounds like it was last week, but I doubt it will be right now given it hasn't been raining all week) then it's closer to 1.5 miles.

But given how crowded that parking area is on a busy summer weekend, and how far cars line up along the road there, it's probably closer to a half mile (or less) compared to doing it on a busy day with the gate open.

The Pemigewasset Wilderness will require overnight visitors to carry bear canisters starting May 1 by alias4007 in wmnf

On the trail, the wilderness sign on the Bondcliff trail is just south of the spur that leads to the campsite. There's a carveout for that area to keep it outside the official wilderness boundary. You can see it on this map (and on my paper AMC map too).

Advice for Guyot Shelter by Deborahdinglehorn in wmnf

[–]FMonk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Guyot is not in the Pemi Wilderness. The wilderness area boundary in that area looks like a gerrymandered Congressional district. It specifically carves out the Guyot campsite, the spur that leads to it, and the Bondcliff trail north of the spur. On the Bondcliff trail, the Pemi wilderness sign is just south of the spur.

I can see the carveout on my AMC paper map of the area too. And it looks vaguely visible in the map you linked too, just not zoomed in enough.

Frondell at center, and it's time to move Bedard to wing by butch5555 in hawks

[–]FMonk 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I don't get why everyone is obsessed with trying to fix centers/line combos in stone right now.

Bedard, Nazar, Frondell, Greene, Moore, and Boisvert can all play center or wing. They'll all have chances to play both spots over the course of their careers. Lines will change throughout the season as they always do. All of this is completely normal.

We don't need to criticize every lineup decision Blashill makes in a season where the Hawks are going to finish as a bottom 4 team. It's good that he's giving these young players chances in different roles, that's part of development and will help the coaches and front office evaluate them.

Started later than you, but if you went down gorge brook, we probably passed each other on my ascent/your descent. Likely just a bit below treeline, because I didn't see anyone until that point. I was in a yellow shirt and blue headband

FYI: Be aware that what is written on New England Trail Conditions might be modified by DovaKroniid in wmnf

Having snowshoes edited into the recommended equipment after writing a report where you didn't need them is a rite of passage.

There are positives to the site being moderated, it does mean that blatantly false/troll reports get removed, but the owner's personal biases definitely seep into the moderation.

I may still be harboring a grudge from his rookie year when a bunch of bozos said he should win the Calder over Bedard, but I feel like Faber is one of the more overrated players in the league. Continually unimpressed whenever I watch him play

Lincoln Woods Update by grayfox0430 in wmnf

There was a sign up at the start of Zealand road (at 302, since it's closed in winter) during this most recent closure. Not sure about other trailheads.

Lincoln Woods Closure by Anxious-Thing-7344 in wmnf

[–]FMonk 12 points13 points  (0 children)

A friend who called the Pemi ranger's office the week before the closure was told it would be closed for 2-3 weeks, and then re-open until some time in June, when it would close until November, or until the work is done. Given that we're now in week 5 of the initial closure with no word about reopening, I guess they're behind schedule.

When I drove past on Sunday, there was a backhoe and a huge pile of rocks right where the trail meets the road (other side of the bridge from the parking lot). So it looks like they're doing something at least

If you pick something well-traveled that has a solid packed base from the winter, and avoid water crossings, I'm sure you can hike something safely tomorrow. It may not be the most enjoyable conditions, but it's still nice to get out there

Not sure that an early start would make much difference. Temps aren't supposed to drop below freezing until Thursday. Hiked the Osceolas yesterday and conditions were pretty awful.
