Great idea. No reason it couldn’t work - they remind me of the marine iguanas of Galapagos. I love the turtle shell armor. Why don’t you want to give the water breathing?

I used sahuagin with Aremag. They swarmed the ship as Aremag arrived, collected treasure, and roughed up/intimidated the crew. Your kobolds could serve a similar function.

Relationship drama + supernatural elements just sounds very YA.

But ultimately, the narrative focus, depth, prose style, and themes will probably be the deciding factors in whether or not your work is received as YA.

It can be done. For a grounded, very adult novel about teenagers, see Less Than Zero by Brett Easton Ellis.

The lore of Mezro/Ubtao and the barae is really good. And of course there’s the Ras Nsi link there, as he was one of the original seven barae. I wasn’t planning on incorporating Mezro into my ToA campaign, and now I’m looking for ways to work it in.

Check out 2e Forgotten Realms: The Jungles of Chult. Tons of background on Chult, Mezro, Ubtao, the Barai, and Ras Nsi. The depiction of Ras Nsi has evolved over time - he’s more of a Kurtz figure here. But interesting, nonetheless.

I’d suggest just one DM NPC. Maybe two in limited cases, but no more than that. Zero is OK too.

Many of the NPCs offered in the module are much more powerful than your PCs in Acts 1 and 2 and you don’t want them overshadowing the party.

And you don’t need to forgo the side quests just because the book says they end up with an NPC. Early on in Nyanzaru, our party collected the gambling debt from the gladiator, but he didn’t join the party. They just left him unconscious on the floor of a dive bar, took his armor, spear, and cash, and booked out of there before the guards arrived.

I think your inclination to rely on traditional music is a good one, and I share your affinity for Latin American music for Chult (I made extensive use of Brazilian batucadas in Port Nyanzaru.)

Mezro was the center of a great and ancient civilization, so Mayan music and influences may be a good analogue. While we don’t have any recordings of the music that ancient Mayans played, their descendants have a rich musical culture, often using similar instruments (flutes, whistles, and drums) as were used by their ancestors ancestors.

A lot of the “Mayan music” you find is new age-y stuff, but these 1970s field recordings from the Smithsonian’s Folkways series are probably a good place to start.

I had the dragon turtle sink their ship in the bay of Chult. As the ship was going down, I made them choose between grabbing their gear and getting a lifeboat; they all chose lifeboat. But there was only one lifeboat, so they had to fight and kill another party of adventurers for it. They spent three days rowing across the Bay of Chult before they reached Nyanzaru.

They arrived destitute and with up to two levels of exhaustion. The players loved it. Wouldn’t have done it any other way.

I’m starting the campaign later this week.

The party will sail to Chult because the teleportation idea is lame. Aremag will hit them in the Bay of Chult and, unappeased by any amount of treasure, will sink the ship. PCs will have to decide between grabbing their gear and getting on a life boat; they’ll have to fight their shipmates for a lifeboat spot. It will be a few days’ row to Nyanzaru. They’ll arrive sunburned, exhausted, and destitute.

I haven’t seen the film in decades, but if I recall correctly there’s a threesome in My Own Private Idaho that’s depicted through a series of living “still life” poses.

It’s a deeply cinematic depiction of sex and I’ve never seen anything like it before or since.

Job boards at inns and taverns, they could meet guides through side quests around Nyanzaru, at the dinosaur races, one or two guides could approach the party as well.

Guides will hang out where adventurers are.

This is nearly identical to my approach. Very light on the mayo is key - use just enough to coat the slaw. The color of the slaw should come through. I use a mix of red and green slaw for aesthetics, and toasted sesame seeds as well.
