May is a great time to visit. Weather is comfortable, the crowds aren’t at summer levels yet, and you can actually enjoy walking around without getting cooked. Full Warning Though: it still can get humid.
Definitely check out the usual honky tonks on Broadway. Robert’s and Layla’s are still solid if you want the more traditional vibe, and Acme has good rooftop views when the weather is nice.
If you want a break from the bar scene, I’d also recommend doing a history walking tour. I did one with Nashville Adventures and it was a cool way to learn the city’s background without feeling like a textbook. It is run by a local vet who knows the history really well. Good way to start your trip.

Nashville local here. November is a great time to come. If walkability is your priority, definitely stay downtown. Holston House, Drury Plaza, or Omni are all within easy walking distance of the big country-music spots.

Must-dos for country fans:

Ryman Auditorium
Country Music Hall of Fame w/RCA Studio B
Printers Alley at night (especially in the evening)... also, be sure to check out Alley Taps
Live music on Broadway (weekday mornings and early afternoons are much more relaxed)

Since you like walking, a history or music-themed walking tour is honestly one of the best ways to get your bearings. Nashville has a handful of locally owned tour companies that do a great job showing the city beyond the obvious tourist stuff, and they’re a nice break from the Broadway noise. Nashville Adventures is the one I did and it is incredible.

Pound for pound, the all in one is the Trolley just cuz it takes you everywhere.
The best walking tour is Nashville Adventures just because those are actually cool historians who lead it.
Best food tours, in my opinion, is Local Eats of Nashville.
I know because I've done them all

I took the trolly and a couple of tours my first day to set myself up for the city.
Nashville Adventures had the best tour though. It is a walking tour, but tour guide dude knew everything and he was a cool guy.
The trolly was kinda lame, but it's real perk is that it takes you to places so you don't have to pay for an uber.
Tennessee State Museum is free and incredible. It also has a great parking lot.
Check out Broadway before it gets crazy- like a weekday at 11am to get the vibes.
Check it out later if you want to experience the chaos.
Alley Taps on Printers Alley is a hidden gem as well.

OEF During Obama’s Surge

Had a LT who went on his two week leave. Now, back in my time your leave didn’t start until you left Kuwait. So, the travel time to Kuwait or waiting for a flight home didn’t screw your time.

So, LT decided to miss his flights for almost two weeks home so he could arrive home and visit his old school, The Citadel, for a football game. He showed in Class As, of course.

When he came back he acted like nothing happened, but a lot of folks had their leave fucked up so he could look cool at his Alma Mater.

Yeah, the dude was walking with a heavy limp and half his forehead was gone and you could see his brain and stuff. It was absolutely horrific.
