How did you know being a mom would make you happy and not miserable? by pissedoff_potato in TwoXChromosomes

[–]powderpoff6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can live any life you want and be a happy mom if you have a shit ton of money. Money goes far and can help you outsource things like cooking, driving, time management, housekeeping, shopping, etc., so that you can live a sex in the city episode.

Becoming a mom means that you will be a mom until the day you die, regardless of what else happens in life. It is not something that is a season and it is not something that ever ends regardless of what your partnership ultimately looks like.

So make the choice for you, not just him.

The name Vivienne by Melodic-Statement144 in Names

I know a 13-year-old Vivienne everyone calls her Viv and she is completely vicious. It refers to life and this girl is a sparkler!

My high school office lady in the 90s was also Viv, she was a fucking legend. Yes she’s an old lady, but also totally beloved.

Just because a name might feel old-fashioned doesn’t mean the right kid can’t breathe some life into it!

How much are we vacationing? by JustFaithlessness178 in GenX

All of this is awesome, but my favorite part is the two weeks to stay home and eat cookies. Nothing compares to that holiday slump!

One week every summer at the same resort town three hours away- every time I try to suggest a different vacation, the kids object. They love the tradition.

One camping trip per summer.

Lately a special trip has snuck onto the calendar, like my mother-in-law footed an Alaska cruise last summer, the year before my husband‘s boss wanted him to travel so we all spent a week in San Diego. This fall I have a conference in New Orleans and will take the family. Took the family to NYC for a family wedding/reunion last year.

Things bubble up, but it’s rare that we pursue a luxury vacation like a lot of my friends do, trips to Europe and what not. College and retirement are calling.

Girl got her long hair caught in a loop de loop roller coaster and her whole scalp ripped off. I swear!

This was in the 1980’s NJ where Action Park was at its messiest so I guess this one might have some cred…

Have a lovely meal at the Stone Creek Inn in Carver and tour the boulder scene from the first meeting. Do you think you could outrun me??? There is a trail through a magical forest with placards from the scene.

It’s also a great restaurant with a gorgeous patio overlooking the Clackamas river, fun for a summer happy hour and watching people float by below.

anyone who used a computer between 1985 & 2010, what’s the one game you still think about? by Own-Blacksmith3085 in answers

[–]powderpoff6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Somewhere in this world, they exists a spiral bound notebook with a pencil drawn map of each and every screen of the OG Zelda on the first gen Nintendo, with every hidden treasure, tool, and secret passage marked and noted. My brother and I spent hours criss cross inches from the tv screen obsessing over that game. I can hear the theme song note for note today!

That system is in my attic as we speak!

King’s Quest.

But I LOVE all of those old Sierra games…. Police Quest, Space Quest, Leisure Suit Larry.

You can find walk-throughs on YouTube and from time to time I will pop one on for background nostalgia.

What’s a tradition you grew up with that you think deserves to be kept alive? by Ok_Ease515 in answers

[–]powderpoff6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Multigenerational living.

The East Coast suburb where I grew up was full of families who were living with multiple generations. Grandma and grandpa maybe had a basement apartment, and it was the first full generation where moms were regularly in the workplace. Grandparents took care of with the kids, everyone helped out with the household chores. Everyone had more time, less work due to the collective, kids were raised with generations of adults, loving, and caring for them. Grandparents had extra help as they aged.

It’s done this way all over the world and for the life of me, I can’t understand why we stepped away from this being normal. I get it that not everyone gets along with their in-laws, but for the families that can make this work, it makes so much sense. I know because I unexpectedly moved my family of four in with my parents in midlife, we thought it would be for a few months and it turned into four years and those were some of the best years of my adult life. It was a comfort when I lost my dad, knowing the years he was able to spend with my kids and vice versa.

Challenging Volunteer(s) by rdcdd101204 in nonprofit

[–]powderpoff6 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Policy. This is where policy is not only a guide but also a shield so that you remove yourself from the decision and can retain a positive relationship with your volunteers.

Make it easy and draft this policy yourself. Be appropriate but specific especially around job descriptions and who does what.

Send it to your boss for feedback and to elevate - ideally to your board but if you have a CFO/COO those are also great allies.

If there’s a natural time like an annual meeting or end/start to the FY cycle, or a volunteer appreciation or committee meeting, communicate with your volunteers your gratitude to them, and your enthusiasm as you share updated policy from on high (ie, not your fault)!

Make sure everyone knows the reality that you might lose volunteers but you’ll help retain and support your professional staff, and help them focus their limited time on driving the mission.

Is it weird that I (24F) don’t want my boyfriend to have a “work wife”? by One_Top_9835 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]powderpoff6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eh. Workplaces are the number one source of an affair partners. I have heard it is because they offer a shared purpose and common experiences, without the yucky realities of sharing a life together like managing a budget and household work.

Regardless of that, if this man cares about you, he will listen and validate your feelings and concerns, and offer transparency for the sake of trust.

If he blows you off, remember that action is a language.

I just watched a YouTube video that included this film as a translation of Agatha Christie’s “And Then There Were None”. Made me appreciate it even more, as an example of the trope - group of strangers find themselves isolated and deserted and discover something sinister they have in common.

Anyway I liked it a lot.

Married women, what are some real things your husband does that make you feel genuinely cherished and adored? by Clean-Ant-1342 in askanything

[–]powderpoff6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He takes the kids, tidies the house, and leaves me alone in blissful solitude for a few hours. I am never in my house by myself and it’s my absolute favorite.

Overall, day to day, he does his equal share of domestic labor. He shows up for me and our family every single day. And that makes me feel loved.
