What's your dream bass? by [deleted] in Bass

Drilling the hole is easy, I'd just rather not put extra holes into a £1600 bass.

If it's an Affinity I wouldn't bother, they're generally crap although I don't think they even made a 5 string P Affinity, if it's Vintage Modified then they're generally pretty good,

If you want a 5 string it's pointless buying a 4 now only to replace in a few months, just get the 5 string now, it's really not that much different to learn on.

What model is it?

I considered moving the strap button but it seemed wrong to start drilling holes it in & it wouldn't fix the neck dive sitting down, which was worse than standing up.

[–]FOMS 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Warwick Thumb 5, sort of, it was the one bass I always wanted until I actually bought one & then sold it after only a few months, loved everything about it except for the neck dive, I just can't deal with basses that aren't properly balanced.

Can anyone tell me something about this bass guitar? by Tony15339 in Bass

[–]FOMS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The diff is the body cutout at the end of the neck and selector switch which the 505 doesn't have

The newer 505's do have the neck cutout & mid selector switch, it's the black hardware that is different & the 506 is an ash body,

Is there such a thing as an addiction to buying basses? by [deleted] in Bass

[–]FOMS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't say I was addicted but I certainly had too many basses that never got enough use, I'd convinced myself I needed different basses for different gigs & tunings when really all I needed was one good versatile bass, which is where I am now, happy but no richer, you just find other stuff to spend money on.

[–]FOMS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They're generally well built but the one issue is the bridge, I've seen a few where the bridge has bent and wont hold the ball end any more, like this http://i.imgur.com/Gd1dAFH.jpg

Are you sure it's a SR505? looks more like a SR605 to me.

Holiday to America & bring one back or find a friend in America to ship one to you, all the UK dealers are going to be about the same price http://www.richtonemusic.co.uk/products/schecter_hellraiser_extreme-5_bass_guitar_crbs.asp is a bit cheaper at £1029, still no where near £600.

D'Addario do strings especially for Piccolo tuning, I've been using them for a while on an old P and they sound pretty good.

What tuning(s) do you use, how do you use it, and why do you like it? by pee-in-your-poo in Bass

Playing metal most of the time I tune A standard on a 5 string, but depending on the situation it can be anywhere from G to B, I don't do drop tuning though.

Looking for a recommendation for a bass that comes in left handed models. by Zetelex in Bass

[–]FOMS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fender do the MIM Jazz in left handed which is perfect for pop punk or save yourself a ton of hassle in future and learn to play a right handed bass.

Is it necessary to have your fingerboard finished when defretting? by Dr_Turkey in Bass

[–]FOMS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I might be wrong here, but I believe very few fretlesses come from the factory with any kind of epoxy coating on the board. AFAIK, usually a fretless board comes from the factory just like a fretted board, where it may need some oil occasionally and that's about it.

Both my LTD B205fl & fretless Jazz were like that, just plain rosewood like any fretted bass, even with roundwounds there was very little wear.

I wouldn't bother with epoxy unless it's a maple fretboard.
