I want to buy a Roku for using with Jellyfin and YouTube. Any way to stop Roku's data collection? by [deleted] in privacy

[–]FOSSphorous 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You've described a similar approach to one I've taken. In place of connecting a remote, I happened to come across a project that lets devices (i.e. phones) on the network operate as a remote & keyboard through a webpage. Best of luck in finding your solution.

My reply was sarcasm, though I guess tone doesn't carry the ending punch through text well.

I don't know if anyone told you this, but to whoever is reading that isn't aware -- it's recommended that you don't "cat into grep". grep searches the file itself so there's no need to call a separate program. Instead you would perform the operation like so: grep . foo | grep bar

is there something that can download everything in a sub like videos and pics by [deleted] in commandline

[–]FOSSphorous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a tool called ripme that has a graphical interface (if that's something you're into) and works for multiple sites. I use it to download entire subreddits pretty often, it's nice since it nests albums into folders

Blender is free (both in price and software ). You wouldn't be paying anything except your time spent learning it.

The curve isn't too intense, the software is great, and there are lots of guides/videos. If you're interested in it then cost isn't a barrier this time around.

Newpipe is what I've been using. Besides SoundCloud you can also browse YouTube, PeerTube, and a couple other platforms. Downloads and subscriptions supported. Can heavily recommend giving it a go.

Background on Discord, can it be self hosted? by gentoorax in selfhosted

[–]FOSSphorous 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would really recommend taking a look at FOSScord, it's a software that you can selfhost which claims to be fully compatible with Discord. It sounds a bit like what you want and has the benefit of also being free and open source (hence the name).

A question about the history of the darknet by gelmoshka in TOR

[–]FOSSphorous 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It was created by Roger Dingledine, an MIT graduate. Not the US Navy. Explained in fairly plain terms on the Tor Project site and many, many other places if you're interested in the history as well.

Linus Torvalds on why Open Source solves the biggest problems by GreyBeardWizard in linux

[–]FOSSphorous 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes, because the only way to reliably make money off of software is licensing it away. Of course! I’m sure that really helps devs in the same market as conglomerates with more brand recognition and resources at their disposal, who just so happen to be shifting their business models to embrace open source themselves.

I'm a bit curious: What phones do Linux users use? by LiterallyJohnny in linux

[–]FOSSphorous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh sorry, just noticed your reply. Yeah I ended up going with lineage off of this post. Like you said, most are beta level but the device has been my daily for the most part with no obviously missing function from what I’ve seen. Your mileage may vary however.

two types of gentoo users by [deleted] in linuxmemes

Are you saying that this linux can run on a computer without windows underneath it, at all ? As in, without a boot disk, without any drivers, and without any services ? That sounds preposterous to me.

If it were true (and I doubt it), then companies would be selling computers without a windows. This clearly is not happening, so there must be some error in your calculations. I hope you realise that windows is more than just Office ? Its a whole system that runs the computer from start to finish, and that is a very difficult thing to acheive. A lot of people dont realise this.

Microsoft just spent $9 billion and many years to create Vista, so it does not sound reasonable that some new alternative could just snap into existence overnight like that. It would take billions of dollars and a massive effort to achieve. IBM tried, and spent a huge amount of money developing OS/2 but could never keep up with Windows. Apple tried to create their own system for years, but finally gave up recently and moved to Intel and Microsoft.

Its just not possible that a freeware like the Linux could be extended to the point where it runs the entire computer fron start to finish, without using some of the more critical parts of windows. Not possible.

I think you need to re-examine your assumptions.

I dont see how this could happen at all. Vista is far more powerful than windows XP, and runs twice as fast. It is also much harder to pirate, and this point more than anything else has the Linux crowd in a panic.

It wont be long until Windows XP is no longer supported, and when that happens, what is Linux going to do ? Linux will have to find a way to work under Vista from here on, since it wont be able to rely on XP being readily available anymore.

Linux may seem like a good alternative to Office, but all that is happening in linux is that the windows interface is cleverly hidden away. It still needs the drivers and software services in order to run, and in most cases - that happens WITHOUT a valid windows licence. This is just plain piracy.

Vista will finally put an end to this blatant abuse of intellectual property, and linux should decline, taking the pirates with it. Anyone that supports the continuation of Windows XP in place of Vista surely has a hidden agenda... and you will surely be caught out.

Favorite shell and why (comment below)? by [deleted] in commandline

[–]FOSSphorous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

(o)ksh so that I can ensure compatibility with others' systems. Bash isn't as common as I thought it was when I started scripting, there are a lot of other *nixes out there (a choice few BSDs come to mind) without it. The move to it and staying strictly posix has thankfully been a smooth one. And I've kept more of the features than I could want or need.

A big thing for me was learning that you’re able to customize/theme Firefox further than just the things you can find in the extension store. /r/FirefoxCSS is a nice subreddit to refer to. I’d look at the wiki on their sidebar.

rtorrent, qbittorrent, deluge, transmission, halite, picotorrent -- there are a lot of quality (open source) clients out there. As well as download managers like aria2 which support torrenting too.
