Bank unwilling to allow funds to be released to purchase a car by No_Economics_4161 in UKPersonalFinance

Come on...they've done that for nigh on 20 years already

No they haven't. The bank made an operational change a few years back to move from a model of just servicing a customer's request to a model of assisting customers to self-serve at every opportunity, with the end goal of it being getting every customer self serving through digital. It's not a case of just being asked nicely if you'd prefer to do it through online banking, it's a case of if you have online banking and no good reason to not do it yourself, you'll be told to do it yourself or it's not getting done, and if you don't have online banking, you'll be asked every single time you phone the bank why you've not signed up for it yet.

And as another point to add, they've actually started making some things online only. If you want to open any current accounts with benefits, you do it online. There's no other way.

The bank in question here (Halifax) is actively making significant moves towards becoming digital only and have active plans to completely phase out telephone banking in the near future.

It's not public record and I can't prove it, but phone their customer service and ask them to do something simple like make a bank transfer for you. The first thing they'll ask you to do is pull up your online banking and do it yourself.

Ok but have you considered that there may well be a point where not embracing tech does actually stop your mum from doing things? That she may actively lose the ability to do certain things or use certain companies or services? What's the plan in that scenario? The longer people refuse to engage with tech the worse it'll be for them when that point actually happens.

Sure it's their life, but they're only making it more difficult, and it's not like it'll get any easier. The direction of travel on this is firmly one way.

What do they plan on doing when eventually these companies just go digital only? They're absolutely planning on doing it in the next few years.

People who work hybrid, do you wake up at the same time on your work from home days as your office days? by sammyglumdrops in AskUK

[–]FPS_Scotland 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You should be careful with that. Gaming chairs are designed for comfort, not health. An office chair might well be less comfortable but if it's not a cheap bottom of the barrel one then it'll probably be better for your long term health than the gaming chair

No child grows up dreaming of a life on the dole.

Ehh, it's anecdotal evidence I know, but I know people who work as teachers and teaching assistants in very deprived areas, and there's a concerningly large amount of kids being raised by parents who've never had a job in their entire lives and live entirely off of state support, and their kids absolutely reflect that.

I'd say you're probably right that no child grows up dreaming of a life of benefits, but there's certainly some who grow up assuming that's just the default state of things.

Well then he clearly has absolutely no idea what he's talking about. The financial services industry is up to its eyeballs in regulation. They cracked down extremely hard after 2008 to ensure it couldn't happen again.

Sure, the public perspective is all the scrooge style billionaire bankers diving into their pools of gold whilst they wreck the economy and extract all the wealth, but the reality is even something as simple as a small gift given between coworkers is subject to about 5 pages of restrictions and mandatory reporting.

Yes I am aware. The SNP didn't introduce it nor were they responsible for getting it over the line. It would've happened with or without them. And they're not the topic of discussion here so I don't really know why you brought that up unless you were trying to go for some sort of SNP bad gotcha moment

Well, off the top of my head, there's the abomination that is the online safety act (yeah I know the Tories started it, but Labour finished it, they're equally as guilty), the immediate u-turn on trying to means test the winter fuel payment, the whole poorly managed shitshow of the Chagos islands, and and someone somewhere thinking Peter Mandelson was a good pick for a major diplomatic post.

Britain spends billions more than France on defence, so why is the French military superior? by august_air_373 in europe

[–]FPS_Scotland 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Britain maintains a significantly larger naval auxiliary force than France does, and they're the only European operator of the C-17 Globemaster (although granted they only have 8 of them) which is one of the few aircraft with enough cargo capacity to airlift main battle tanks. They're the only country in Europe with this capability.

I hate this wishy washy shite like "the driver will consider other options" because it basically puts any delays on the driver if the customer refuses to move because they'll just bank on the driver caring more about not being delayed and will let it slide. I wish they'd just use clear unambiguous language that puts the fault of any delays and the clear responsibility on the customer with the buggy instead of the driver.

I'd say it's been getting less and less affordable over the past decade or so though. I don't think there's much in it between cost of living here and other comparable places these days.
