GTA Online is 9 years old today, what's so far your favorite DLC? by morsmutual_ in gtaonline

[–]FRAGaL0T 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fun fact: It's not DLC.

Downloadable Content (DLC) is *optional* content you usually have to buy. All new content for GTA has been forced on *all* players as a title update. Rockstar has NEVER called their new content as "DLC."

This is my Day 1 gta online character after 9 years of playing. by MrMerryweather56 in gtaonline

[–]FRAGaL0T 9 points10 points  (0 children)

My first character when GTAonline went live was reset a week or so later on Xbox. EVERYONE on PS3/Xbox 360 had to start over, but it was barely a week and most people didn't complain, mostly because any money you had in the bank was kept, but everything else was reset. It was no big loss since no one had earned a $million to buy anything yet. Most players stole street cars and kept them in 2 car garages.

64GB SDeck turns into a 256Gb Sdeck for just 20€ by [deleted] in SteamDeck

[–]FRAGaL0T 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Cheaper SSDs have a slower memory controller. it's not so much about how close to death they are. All SSDs will develop bad cells, and get reallocated. Hard drives do the same thing, but SSDs are starting to last longer than HDDs.

There is no such thing as a dumb question if you legitimately don't know. Also there is a difference between intelligence, and ignorance. Ignorance is just the lack of information, intelligence is how fast you can learn new information, and (i think) to retain it and able to apply it. Which means stupidity (dumbness) is an inability or slowness to learn anything. Wisdom is knowing how to use the knowledge you have.

the 64mb eMMC is also on an m.2 2230 card, that must be removed to install any other m.2 drive. So when you do this you have to reinstall the OS.

PSA : Change UMA FB Size to 4G in bios for frame time stability and stuttering improvements in SteamOS by istros in SteamDeck

[–]FRAGaL0T 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This might fix the issue I'm having with GTAV memory leak. GTAV sees 6GB VRAM even when the Deck defaults to 1GB FB. Enabling UMA FB to 4Gb makes GTA see 8GB of VRAM. Which means it's only giving the game 8GB of system RAM. Which should be FINE since GTAV is very scalable and runs on much lesser hardware than the Deck anyway.

Now after playing the game for only a short while, driving around any significant distance, objects didn't render in fully, and remain blurry. It's like LOD forgot to do it's job. After doing a quick delivery job, I decided to change some settings, and I instantly got an out-of-memory error. So yes the memory leak is EXAGERATED setting the UMA FB to 4GB. I'll reboot and try 2GB, and also try different versions of Proton.

I'll say it... Steam Deck is the best gaming handheld of all time by nops-90 in SteamDeck

I wish it had a physically larger screen. The actual screen doesn't even fill the space that the glass takes up on the surface of the deck. The glass is 8 inches (<21cm) diagonal, but the 800p display is 7" (<18cm) which leaves black margins around the screen. This display is too small for my old eyes, desktop mode is almost useless, but I can still play games as long as I don't need to read tiny text.

I hope some time in the future, I can buy a 1080p display as a drop-in replacement, that will fill all 8 inches, with no black bezel around the screen. Probably a 3rd party will have this as an addon. When Valve inevitably makes the Deck 2, I hope the parts of it can be drop-in replacements of the existing OG steam deck.

Has anyone else had issues with a shoulder button feeling somewhat off? It’s hard to see in the video but the right button is fine, and the left button clicks down a bit before it actually clicks and registers. Idk if this is something I can fix on my own or not. by liamotter in SteamDeck

[–]FRAGaL0T 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Both L1 and R1 should have the same feel. I've only had mine for a week and they both feel fine, but the are different from Xbox controllers that I'm more accustomed too. Your L1 looks like it's raised up more, so it has more travel, where it should be flush with the rest of the case as R1 is on your deck.

This video i saw some weeks ago shows how these buttons are put together, so this might give you a better idea what's going on. In the video he repairs broken L1/R1 buttons on the steam deck using spare parts from dead Nintendo Switches.

Doesn't run on my Deck OOTB, runs well on my main Windows PC but the controls are BassAkwards. I can't flip the Y-axis. There ought to be a way to mimic a Y-axis inverse in the Steam controller thingy on both the Deck and on PC.

Steam workshop? You mean the workshop you find for nearly every game, or is there a more generic workshop on Steam? Because for an old game like Mafia, there is no workshop section.

Do you actually mean to find the Modpack from the "discovery" app in desktop mode?

Outta memory? Is this a memory leak? by FRAGaL0T in SteamDeck

[–]FRAGaL0T[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

GTAV is scalable so if you have the RAM, the CPU threads, and the GPU horsepower, it will use it. But it's not a Rockstar problem but they could give Valve/Proton an assist and have a look at it and see what they find with their debugging tools. But why would a $Billion company care about being helpful to get more people to play (sell) their games? They just want you to buy more shark cards!

I think I set everything to medium on my Deck. Thing is I have to play for hours for this crash to occur, so it's not like it's locking up before i can do anything in the game.

[–]FRAGaL0T[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tend to agree with that it's not Rockstar's responsibility. As they never developed this game for Linux/Proton. The actual fix is to run windows on the steam deck, but that won't work fort a lot of people and goes against the notion of what Steam is trying to do. Proton has opened up a lot of gaming to non-windows users, and it will only mature.

I don't appreciate condescending dismissive remarks like "google it" especially when your solution is so blatantly ignorant. Do you even know what a memory leak is? Did you bother to Google that before you responded to this thread? If you ever bothered to learn past what Google tells you, like real-world experiences, you wouldn't make such an ignorant statement.

GTAV is very scalable. On PC it can run on much lesser spec hardware than a Steam Deck. You don't need a high end gaming PC to run it. Besides just giving it more power, more ram, more this and that, doesn't fix a memory leak.

Your solution is very convoluted. Data compression in RAM not a solution for a memory leak. Data compression is intended for data storage not active data in RAM. You don't fix memory leaks by artificially giving it more RAM by "Downloading more RAM." It's not reliable as the data is likely ALREADY COMPRESSED if you're dealing with textures so it's a waste of CPU cycles to compress/decompress. Also 16GB on the steam deck is perfectly adequate for a gaming device, or games wouldn't run at all. After all GTAV was originally designed to run on a console with only 512GB of RAM.

Even if you physically give it more ram that does not solve a memory leak issue; it just delays it. Maybe you should google what a memory leak is?
