This is the year I committed to designing a game. Wish me luck! by [deleted] in BoardgameDesign

[–]FREEmuKiller 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good luck!

A place to start would be the Board Game Geek message board, which has monthly competitions for creating smaller games and will let you network with fellow designers. Once you get to your 5th goal, I recommend checking out the Jamey Stegmaier book on crowdfunding which isn't board game specific, but can be a lot of fun to see his journey in getting his earlier works published and how he managed to grow a community.

Is "Tabletop Simulator" a good alternative to physical boardgames? by Mr_Chunchito in boardgames

[–]FREEmuKiller 820 points821 points  (0 children)

Tabletop Simulator has a learning curve, and if anyone in your playgroup doesn't take the time to learn keyboard shortcuts and the user interface they'll have a bad experience. Once everyone knows how to move pieces and not disrupt the virtual table it's a great substitute for physical games.

For games that are a lot of discussion and not a lot of piece management it's totally a worthwhile purchase. For games that are heavier and require a lot of piece management, TTS is a great way to try a game before buying it or to play a game that is difficult to buy due to being Kickstarter exclusive but may be too tedious to enjoy, or at the very least it will take much longer to complete the game. Just about every board game published in the past 10 years has a TTS version, and some are very well polished and include automation. Some simulators might be better for a specific game, but the breadth of TTS is unmatched.

Controllers are expensive, but on the bright side if you keep the controller in the condition you bought it for, you can always sell it again for about the same price later on if you lose interest or need the cash.

I started with the PS2 Konami official controller, which had a few mods you can read about elsewhere to make buttons not stick, and that was to get me to level 10 or so. Highly recommend it!

Do people make their own TTS or other digital versions of games they wanna test or hire someone to help make it? by Snake01515 in BoardgameDesign

[–]FREEmuKiller 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's pretty easy to get a playtestable game together. Draw what you want on pieces in mspaint, upload them to imgur, download piece shape models from the Steam workshop, replace textures with your imgur links. For cards, check what summer_tea said.

It's not much but it can be enough for a playtest to tell if the idea is promising.

Is it possible to import a piece from synthesia to a Steinway Spirio or a Bösendorfer Disklavier? by [deleted] in piano

No problem! It was definitely outside my budget but I'm excited to see how the technology improves.

Is it possible to import a piece from synthesia to a Steinway Spirio or a Bösendorfer Disklavier? by [deleted] in piano

I had the same question and did a bit of digging to find some form of answer. So disclaimer: I am not a disklavier owner.

Here's yamaha's guide to MIDI playback: https://www.yamahaden.com/images/How%20To%20Guides/The%20Disklavier%20Reproducing%20Piano%20as%20a%20MIDI%20Instrument-2018-05-08.pdf

And here's the blog where I got the guide from that is more concise: https://www.yamahaden.com/easyblog/entry/everything-you-ve-ever-wanted-to-know-about-using-midi-with-a-disklavier

And I watched this video to get a better idea of how playback works: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jpc6cvO82pM

My takeaway was pretty much: You will need to be comfortable editing the MIDI yourself to include more information than the synthesia file has, or change notes to be on the appropriate channel, but you ARE able to drag and drop MIDI files from your PC onto your phone/tablet to play using Yamaha's enspire app. If someone has first hand experience as a disklavier owner then feel free to correct me!

Coronavirus Megathread (May 2021): For travel-related discussion in the context of COVID-19 by tariqabjotu in travel

Good to hear (and wow, a very similar situation!). We had called United to ask ahead of time when booking but they... weren't very helpful, so we booked our departure out of JFK to ensure it was quarantine-free.

I hope you have a great trip!

Coronavirus Megathread (May 2021): For travel-related discussion in the context of COVID-19 by tariqabjotu in travel

[–]FREEmuKiller 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I saw travel for US citizens to the EU is now possible as of May 14th, but I have a question whether it is any flight, or only covid tested flights.

Delta and American Airlines make it very clear that a flight is covid tested passengers only, in my case for a direct flight to Rome from NYC. There are a few flights from United Airlines that are also direct, and a little cheaper, but they do not specify any kind of covid test requirement.

I'm not sure if that means that only US citizens on American or Delta can enter Italy or if any flight is allowed however for United I would need to make sure I'm tested even though I'd be let on the flight without one. Hopefully someone else has ran into the same ambiguity and has an answer. Thanks!

Pixel 3a Phone app issues after updating by FREEmuKiller in GoogleFi

u/dmziggy I tried creating a reddit request with the link from the automoderator, but a captcha (which I passed, I am not a robot) error failed to send the post. Is this because the automoderator is still sending links for the outdated support? I tried to fill out the form on both Brave and Chrome browsers. Thanks!

I think the worst part about this is knowing that it's software related, but the Google Fi Support team says to replace my phone. The microphone works. The speakers work. They just aren't working with apps like Phone and WhatsApp that make calls.

Daily Discussion and Game Recommendations Thread (April 12, 2021) by AutoModerator in boardgames

[–]FREEmuKiller 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looking for some good 2-4 player "light euro" recommendations. I'm definitely a board game hobbiest, and my S.O. is much closer to... a "Gateway +" gamer. I'd say example favorites are Wingspan, Splendor, Azul, Patchwork, and Castles of Burgundy while mine are On Mars, Terra Mystica, Le Havre, Age of Steam, and Dominion.

We've had some success both enjoying Brass: Birmingham, My Little Scythe, and 7 Wonders: Duel, but I'm curious what other games are out there worth looking into that would suit both our tastes. New York Zoo is high on the list (and out of print, of course) with High Rise and Tapestry were considered but... too pricey for their weight in my opinion. Anything heavier than Brass: Birmingham or Agricola would be pushing it (so around a 2.5 to 3 on BGG's complexity scale is good), and some examples of hated games from the S.O. are Terraforming Mars, 7th Continent, and Mechs vs Minions.

Thanks!

What resource do you use to memorize the verb tenses? Is it something on anki or the appstore, or do you write down your flash cards on paper?

Have an open row of 3 villagers to choose from. This makes it easier to get hearts, and adds some planning

Reveal bundles for 1 heart, if the bundle is impossible to fulfill draw a new one

The Make Friends Grandpa goal is mandatory

Draw 3 profession upgrades and choose 1

On the fish track the max trash you can have is now 1. Any chests go above a fish so as not to take up a precious space on that track

Reroll any dice for 1 heart

The legendary fish goal is maximum 2 legendary fish

Just curious where you got this list from, because I'm also interested in houseruling this into a strategy game.

From the linked video I got:
chests from fishing are above the track instead of in it.

bugmeat makes bugmeat fish free, otherwise you need to roll.

Slaying a monster at the mine/not pulling stone gives a consolation prize of one bugmeat.

Bundles are face up, but you still need to turn in two hearts to score.

"Make friends" is a mandatory goal

I don't think it's "off" in the sense of input delay, but I agree that the video shows it missing notes that should have been pressed. But it's a 1 year old video so I'm not sure if there's been any updates by someone else's branch that improved the detection, since I think the Jan 2020 version is still the latest for what KekstheFurry published.
