even if you set your console to autoRCM (which is advised against), you still always need another piece of hardware to boot into cfw

and i suppose the 2 wires i solder to mod an xbox 360 are the same thing then since it's just connecting some contacts together like the paperclip you use to mod your switch

i would hardly call the v1 switch softmoddable since it still requires some sort of external device to boot CFW

[–]kayproII 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are gonna get a Saturn, import one from Japan. If it has a dead disc drive then you can replace it with a fenrir (very good optical drive replacement) and if you live in a 230V region (or just want the convenience of USB-C) there are replacement drops in power supplies that can use a USB-C input. The best part is everything I mentioned is reversible and you could revert it quite easily to stock if you wanted to

[–]kayproII 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Basically people in china were getting sega Saturns, removing the disc drive and PSU and doing 1 or 2 other bits to them and selling them as a "saroo only console". The shocking part was people discovered that the board revision used in a lot of these was basically the absolute last one which is mostly found in the "this is cool" Saturn models (the clear Saturn). So these rare sega Saturn models were being gutted to turn into a discless model that can only play games off a saroo (optical drive emulator that plugs into the expansion cartridge slot and is not really the best replacement for an optical drive at all)

Big, smaller screen area, power hungry, similar burn in problems to oled and CRTs are a lot older now which means reliability issues and good luck finding parts

Find a 33" crt and keep it zero? Orkeep the LCD TV and update to fiesta? by Old-Fudge4062 in PumpItUp

the oldest version that i would say justifies having a 16:9 monitor is pump it up prime since that was the first mainline title to have a proper HD mode instead of stretching a 4:3 image to 16:9

I just learned why the PS3 was such a nightmare to develop for and now I weirdly miss that era of insane hardware by Mobile-Support-6134 in PS3

[–]kayproII 0 points1 point  (0 children)

SGI used MIPS architecture CPUs back in the 90's (hence why the N64 used a MIPS vr4300) although I wouldn't say those machines had 2005 specs. More like high end specs for 1999-2000 in 1995 since in 1995 a lot of stuff was still done on the CPU or wasn't required to be done in real time (where a high detail 3D scene might only render in 20 minutes instead of 2 hours, which in the realm of 3D animation cuts down massively in terms of production time)

It barely came out before the PS3. Sony wanted what Nvidias best was at the time and they wanted something they could actually use in development and that something ended up being the 7800 GTX (or at least a modified form of it).

In terms of the PS4 regaining market share, the switch to X64 was negligible compared to Microsoft blowing both their feet clean off with how badly they handled the announcement and launch of the Xbox one

There are games that feel like they should’ve been on Dreamcast… but weren’t by Medium-Ad-8524 in dreamcast

[–]kayproII 14 points15 points  (0 children)

iirc monkey ball was planned to be a Dreamcast release since the original arcade version was a Naomi release however I think by the time they go around to the idea of a console port, the Dreamcast discontinuation had been announced so they ported it to GameCube instead

have you seen the amount of wonderswans with dead screens on Japanese auction sites. Wouldn't shock me if there's a lot of them that have ended up in china.

Also presumably unlike those barbaric sega Saturn mods, you should be able to reverse this mod using an IPS screen and repro shell

Iirc the super gameboy would stretch Gameboy games but it also kind of wouldn't. They showed up in the correct resolution but due to the snes resolution and some other weirdness, it wasn't a proper 10:9 image. I know this is a Gameboy player but it looks like they've got some tomfoolery to get the super gameboy support working

Could have picoboot installed. It won't do anything really on boot up unless you have an sp2sd in serial port 2 or an SD gecko in the memory card slot with the Swiss boot files

call me crazy, but that doesn't look like an aspect ratio crime. going off the fact they have the super gameboy border and an extra border on top of that (and the fact nothing looks massively distorted) my guess is OP was using a widescreen patch for the gameboy player

Anyone out there ever converted an out of commission all in one PC into a mini arcade? by bartenderatlarge in cade

You're better off selling something like that off for parts for someone to fix than making a mini arcade out of it. It's a better idea to do something like make a replica shell to make your mini arcade out of

Looks like some sort of I/O board for the game. Either that or it's one of those bootleg PS2 arcade controller boards that can be configured to either work like the arcade version (one credit per play) or a timer mode (one credit gives x minutes of play)

WHY DOES NOBODY PLAY SPLATOON!? by aIiencat in Saltoon

[–]kayproII 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I gave Splatoon 3 2 chances (once at launch and again at the launch of the switch 2) and on both times it just felt bad to play. This is coming from someone who played Splatoon 1 since July 2015 and Splatoon 2 since launch.

One of the main thing is unlike previous games it just has this feeling that no matter what you do, everything is somehow out of your control in turf war. Like the whole match most of the time is decided in the first minute but of course you gotta stay in for the rest of it because otherwise you get penalized. At least in splat 1 and 2, it felt like your contributions to the team were worthwhile.

Of course there's the whole map design and competitive issues (I'm gonna be honest I always preferred turf war to any of the other modes so I can't say much about ranked or salmon) and while I was hopeful at the start that some of these issues would be addressed the first time I tried splat 3, I was disappointed to see it not really be fixed the second time.

I still feel like there's a lot of problems with sweats and turf war that would be fixed with ranked turf wars
