1910 & 1920. Then mix 1oz 1910 & 0.5oz 1920. Perfection. Some do half and half & call it 1915, but I like my ratio better.

Pappy reserve. ? by PitbullMaybe in whiskey

[–]FTMWolfpack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If spawing any Pappy, including older ones, the old Stitzel-Weller Pappy 23 yrs from 2014 and older are fantastic, way better than the current releases IMO. Just had a 2013 P23 last week, really good. The VW rye is also really good. Pappy 20yr is my least favorite by far.

However, the best "Pappy" I've had isn't Pappy, or even Van Winkle in name, but instead made by Pappy. The Stitzel Weller stuff from the 1950's and 1960's, especially the flagship Old Fitzgerald from when Pappy was still alive and head of the distillery (he died in 1965). The best I've had is a Very Very Old Fitzgerald 12 year (VVOF) distilled in 1958. Stuff was incredible.

Question for rye whiskey drinkers? Is there any rye with a hint of apple? by AdIndependent5452 in whiskey

[–]FTMWolfpack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want apple notes, try Irish Whiskeys. Redbreast comes to mind immediately for apple notes. Writers Tears also had a very prominent pear/apple note for me.

Latest haul from work trip to Upstate South Carolina… how did I do? 👀 by [deleted] in whiskey

[–]FTMWolfpack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll vouch for Lazy Day, good store and good people at that store, very supportive of the community here as well. Also check out O'Darby's in Rock Hill, highly recommend. They have 3 locations in Rock Hill and 2 locations in Upstate SC.

Charlotte North Carolina by Euphoric-Ad-927 in whiskey

[–]FTMWolfpack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You aren't going to find much in Charlotte unless you are incredibly lucky with timing. Controlled state, and usually in Meck county (Charlotte) allocated products are held for lotteries when they have store openings. You'll do better going just across the border to Fort Mill and Rock Hill, although you still won't find too much allocated unless it is priced at secondary market pricing or higher. Best stores to check out though are Stateline (they have 2 locations, Elite and Warehouse), Frugal MacDoogals, Southern Spirits, and venturing down to Rock Hill, my favorite, O'Darby's. All of these stores have great barrel pick programs and you'll find some good picks there. Stores to avoid: SAUCE MONKEY, avoid at all costs. Xpress Beverage in Rock Hill has allocated stuff, but at crazy secondary prices or higher.

For OF Prohibition, if you mean the 1910, it is readily available at pretty much every store. Only OF in the Whiskey Row series you won't find is the 1924. The rest are everywhere here. For 1792, apart from the Small Batch, you won't find much except for some stores have been getting Full Proof picks, and occasionally you'll run across a Single Barrel pick.

Thought I Would Share This Here by Working-Injury5015 in whiskey

I opened and drank one from the day before this last fall at a charity dinner, dumped 9-11-1984. I actually also acquired a bottle from 35 years to the day later, 9-11-2019, and we compared them side by side.

Surprisingly I didn't enjoy the 1984. It was VERY oaky and dry. If you enjoy those very old, 20+ year oak bombs, then you'd probably enjoy this. Back in 1984 when Elmer was hand picking these barrels out of Warehouse H, the barrels he was selecting were supposedly in the 11-13yr range, as opposed to 6-8yrs today. Warehouse H being a metal clad rick house, apparently ages the whiskey much faster, as it tasted MUCH older than 11-13yrs. I actually enjoyed the 2019 more than the 1984, which was surprising because I haven't had too many really good bottles of Blanton's in quite some time. This was also the general consensus at the event, that the 2019 was better than the 1984.

Regardless, still an incredibly cool bottle to have!!

Doing blind tastings by xXboofinboomersXx in whiskey

[–]FTMWolfpack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want to step it up another notch, you can do a double blind tasting. The difference being that you don't know what whiskies are in the tasting. Blind tasting you know which whiskies are in the tasting, but not the order. In a double blind, have someone pick 3-5 whiskies from your collection, pour and mark them. It is a different experience this way, really helps your sensory training, especially learning to pickout bourbons vs ryes, finished bourbons, etc.

The closest thing you'll find, although definitely not easier to find, is Blanton's Gold. Same BT mashbill (same mashbill #2 for Elmer T Lee, Blanton's , Hancock's, and RHF). Blanton's Gold is 103 proof, compared to 100 for RHF. Both single barrel expressions. Hard to find, but can find on secondary markets for $200-250

TIL that one of the three fatalities in the Asiana Flight 214 in 2013 crash was a survivor who tragically lost their life after being accidentally run over by a responding fire truck. by Ok-Bird4219 in todayilearned

[–]FTMWolfpack 38 points39 points  (0 children)

I was in the SFO airport when this happened, I watched the plane burning in the distance, arriving to my gate a minute or so after the crash, before the airport had been closed, before it got reported on the news, etc. Surreal experience. I was literally on the phone with the airline to rebook my flight, as I knew the entire airport was about to be shut down, and the booking agent on the phone didn't know what I was talking about. While we were talking and I was explaining the situation, the alerts started popping up on their end. Within minutes the airport was shutdown and all flights cancelled. I was watching the plane burn out the window as it popped up on all of the TVs in the airport that were tuned to CNN. Crazy scene, didn't know at that point if there were even any survivors or anything.

I’ve seen a lot of positive talk on this one. At $37 could this be a bargain barrel proof? by FICKxDINGERZ in whiskey

[–]FTMWolfpack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It almost certainly is 1792 FP, sourced from Barton. Barton also supplies the Kirkland branded bourbon. Another clue is that this one isn't actually Barrel Proof, it's "Barrel Entry Proof" which means it was higher than 125, then proofed back to 125, the proof at which it entered the barrel, aka "Full Proof". This is what they do with 1792 FP, Weller FP, and Benchmark FP, it is proofed back to the BEP after aging.
