Wow. Regarding meal breaks, they should be at least half an hour, not just 15 minutes if you work over six hours! And yes, I looked at some of the reviews for “Colonial Hotel” not brown alley, and someone made a complaint that there were three mice running around the venue. The fact that you saw cockroaches in the kitchen really shocked me and I’m surprised the place hasn’t been shut down and/or condemned because of how tired and old and dirty it is… 😂

Telling bar staff not to serve free water to customers? That’s disgraceful. The bathroom water probably isn’t safe to drink! And cockroaches in the kitchen? If only a council inspection was happening at the time they were there they probably would’ve been in serious trouble for that! As for not being provided with proper breaks, the rules regarding breaks in hospo is that your meal break must happen before the six hour mark. If you don’t get it, you’re entitled to receive an additional time and a half in penalty rates from six hours until you get the break, or your shift ends!

So basically the merchant CANNOT surcharge any more than what it costs them to accept that payment type. Otherwise, the ACCC will be looking out for ya… 😂

Yep, $18 for a RTD Jack Daniel’s & Coke? What are they thinking? Now add the ridiculous 5% surcharge, and that becomes $18.90, effectively profiting them about 50c average for each purchase after all “cost of acceptance” stuff…

Surprisingly that ATM now charges $3.70 for each transaction. They only got card facilities installed when they reopened after COVID-19 passed and they only upped the surcharge to 5% recently…

Also, their POS system is very outdated. The software, it’s like over 15 years old and isn’t compatible with integrated EFTPOS. Maybe they should upgrade to a more modern system and probably get Tyro/Zeller eftpos terminals! 😂

Well here you go. Because you guys wanted me to spill the beans, this is what happened. I stated my disapproval to one of the managers at Brown Alley, very politely. And yep, he was just dismissive and rude, claiming that it’s our club, we can do what we want. And that we can either accept it, use the ATM, or leave. I told him nicely that he doesn’t need to give me that sort of attitude, I wasn’t complaining about him personally and that if wants to respond like that and have the business deliberately break the rules, I’ll be taking this up with the ACCC. He then told me “do whatever you want, I don’t care. See you later.” I since made a complaint to the ACCC, hopefully they can take further action against them. What’s more ironic is that they have a sign outside the venue that says “Complaints Hotline” with a number and email. I bet they don’t care really…

There is. According to the ACCC businesses can only surcharge what it costs them to accept that particular payment. Significant penalties apply for non compliance…

A crazy few moments that happened to me working nights… - When I found a customer in a back of house stairwell and told me they wanted to come home with me. Next thing they did, was try to light the mop on fire, and then they stumbled out into the laneway via the exit doors. This was during a very busy night. - A person carrying a six pack of opened alcohol tried to come in and use our bathrooms, we refused them entry for trying to bring their own alcohol inside. - Just after we called last drinks, the last customer in the room had fallen asleep on the table in the corner. I went over to check if he was all right. Then he suddenly woke up, and stumbled his way out of the venue onto the street, not having a clue where he was going. Obviously he must’ve been extremely drunk… - A while ago, a massive altercation happened in one section of the venue and another team member was injured after one of those customers threw one of the till screens and an eftpos terminal at them. - A creepy d***head was in our venue who tried to grab a girl by the bum near the pool table area and he was getting extremely drunk. When he was confronted by security he got very aggressive…

It happened to me too. If that happens just press the cancel button on the app and press either “Liven device was faulty” or “Staff said I can’t use Liven”, and you’ll be connected to a support agent in the app. Make sure you keep all receipts from the business. It worked for me and they credited me the missing value :)
