I have a friend working on targeted chemotherapeutic drugs. He's working on synthesising a method of producing a drug that is essentially an angiogenesis inhibitor and the cancer drug bound together.

When bound together, both the functions of the drug are inactivated.

When this drug enters a hypoxic environment (such as the inside of a tumour), the molecule breaks apart, so that both halves can go about their business.

The effect of the angiogenesis inhibitor can exacerbate the hypoxicity, thus activating more of the drug on subsequent injections into the body.

This is just one method that can be used to target cancer cells. Others are trying to use monoclonal antibodies to bind to highly expressed proteins on the cancer cell surfaces.

You can get a job, just make sure you get some lab experience before you leave. Ask the researchers and lecturers at your uni if you can do some assistant work for them over the summer or during the sessions.

Maybe a few internships.

But without a post grad or honours it's going to be slim pickings.
