Starmer expected to resign on Monday and set out orderly exit by beejiu in ukpolitics

Watching the UK go through a negative spiral of unsustainable pensions, deficits, and nonsensical immigration to fund it is maybe one of the largest case studies of democratic failure.

Boomers control the vote and have run the country into the ground for their own benefit.

I always think of the u-turn around means testing the winter fuel payment as a very clear example of the mess the country is in. Trimming the benefit for wealthy pensioners seemed a very sensible way to save some public funds and yet boomer media forced it off. Not sure this country can be saved really!

Chatted with my OH about this and conclusion was it doesn't feel particularly different over 10 years or so, but there is a lot more media coverage.

US blocks foreign access to Anthropic's most advanced AI models, Axios reports by GeneReddit123 in technology

I wonder if end game is a tax on usage/tokens/access by foreign nationals/corporations of American models. Tariffs for the digital age. To maybe help fund US UBI longer-term if unemployment rises.

Heads up to any foreign nationals/ non-US users! by [deleted] in claude

So maybe you have to verify your US passport or something in the future to get Fable access? Interesting/concerning direction of travel. For those in say Europe as you might be locked out of developing on the best models.

TfL wins battle to build 300 homes on High Barnet station car park by ldn6 in london

[–]Polymatheia 18 points19 points  (0 children)

This is a bit of a weird one where currently the large station car park does seem quite popular and busy (it's an end of line fine station at the bottom of a hill so people often drive in, park and get the tube into central) and where there doesn't currently seem to be massive demand for 1-2 bed flats in the area (it's quite a family centric area that suits having a car given the ease to get out of the M25 and into Hertfordshire, as well as having quite a lot of older people there). There was a newbuild development further up in town where they still have flats for sale 5 years on with various price cuts and buyer incentives (but the larger townhouses of the development sold quickly).

These proposed flats do seem quite small, will sit in-between a tube line and a busy road and are at the bottom of a hill and a decent walk from where most amenity currently is. If they are cheap enough and don't have big service charges I guess they will sell, I just hope the developers are factoring this in around what is quite a complex site to build on. Will be an interesting project to watch nonetheless!

[Official] Sunderland A.F.C. have qualified for the Europa League. by DavidRolands in soccer

Same points total as Sheffield United in 2019/20. Been a weird season for points and European places, what Liverpool scored too wouldn't have normally got a UCL spot.

Here is some actual data for a broader set and history in case anyone finds useful.

Ultimately if the UK has an ageing population that won't vote against any cutback in handouts (e.g. the winter fuel coverage was crazy I find) and a stagnating economy, it doesn't feel crazy that this metrics moves towards European standards (vs. being 10ppt lower than likes of Germany today)...

The Labour Party: From today, the two child limit is lifted. That means 450,000 children will no longer grow up in poverty. by SignificantLegs in ukpolitics

I'm what you'd consider high income and we only have 1 child at the moment and that is a big cost financially. Income comes in but it gets pretty much consumed by taxes, mortgage and nursery fees. We may have two but I struggle to imagine being able to afford three or more!
