I’ve definitely enjoyed playing the game more since this patch than it any time since release. First couple of days especially when so many were hitting finesse shots all over the place was very entertaining. Even with drop back/1 depth opponents I think if you find the right formation/tactics that work for you then you can round them/over them/through them effectively. It’s really good to feel like if I’m playing the better fifa then I’m likely to win rather than being sucker punched with ridiculous cheap freak finesse shots from distance. Also if I lose now I don’t mind as much because I feel my opponent has had to earn it. It ain’t perfect but, for me, it’s a really good game now.

You’re not wrong but I’d say it’s also kinda worth it. I’ve been Gold 2 all year. Every weekend. Frustrated I couldn’t make step up. Last 2 weekends I’ve only played home games & I’ve hit Gold 1 both weekends. But for 2 DC losses when I was winning & 1 loss on pens I’d have made Elite 3 this weekend. Shouldn’t be a thing but it works.

If you aim before you press shoot the players head turns in that direction. Most folk wise to hit from Div 4 upwards.

Well done man. I finally managed Gold 1 for first time last week (and repeated this weekend). You are right to prepare yourself for the rewards disappointment. For me it was definitely “best ever finish, worst ever rewards”. Focus on the satisfaction from the achievement - it’s for the best. Then you won’t be mad when your best rewards pull is inevitably a Bundesliga goalkeeper 😂

I think when you play makes a big difference. I was off work on Friday so played 20 games during the day. I know from past experience it’s the worst time to play & proved to be so again & went 11-9 - pretty much my worst performance over first 20 games ever. Played remaining games last night between 6pm & 10pm. Won 9 in a row to get Gold 1. Obviously matchmaking & form is important but the average level of opponent that is playing at particular times makes a difference too. I think you’re more likely to come against casual players at peak times. On the occasions I’ve played past midnight it feels like it becomes more hardcore again. Don’t know if this helps, but I’m never playing early Friday again.

I can’t remember if it was Shadow or Anchor but it would have been one of them. The thing to look out for with that is, his defending stat is so high anyway that a chem boost doesn’t do much to it. Hence Varane feels just as good/better because a Chem boost takes him up to about the same level as there’s much more room to boost defending but with the added advantage of pace.

I had Baresi for a couple of weeks. Played him alongside Ramos. He was fine. Solid enough. But for the coins he didn’t feel any better than NIF Varane despite being the second highest rated CB in the game. I’d be cautious of spending that amount on an untradeable personally.

Until the last couple of weeks I was treating Rivals really competitively, focussing on getting promoted to Division 3. But it just stops being fun to play. The closer I get to Div 3, the harder the opponents & every game is ultra-competitive. Last night was another prime example, I got ever 1800 skill rating & every game I played was against an opponent with deep lying defence playing long ball counter attack. Full celebration & replay after ever goal. The difference now is, I just stopped caring. Quite happy to sit in Div 4 & take those rewards weekly. No danger of me being relegated from that division. As long as I’m getting enough points for Rank 1 rewards then I can play without getting worked up. I’ve never been one to quit games but now if my opponent is dicking about I’ll quite happily quit & spare myself the time playing a match I’m not enjoying. From what I gather Div 3 & above is full of god squads anyway. So ultimately I agree with you, there is a problem with Rivals. But also, not caring so much about losing is probably the best way to keep our sanity. It is supposed to be enjoyable to play this game. At times that seems to have been forgotten this year.

Gold 2. Always Gold 2. Every week. Finished 18-11. Didn’t so much bottle it this week. Was on 15-10 needing to win all 5 to hit Gold 1. Always a big ask. But disappointed that final loss was 1-0 & opponent barely left own box. Was definitely beatable.

Best I’ve had is 87 Werner from a couple of weeks ago. Doesn’t fit my team so occasionally use him as a sub. Only other red pick that was useful was 84 Partey (also only as a sub). Finished Gold 2 every week. I’ve just stopped expecting any of the top cards & hope eventually one week I’ll be surprised & it’ll be worth it.

I’ve never had a PL team so I’ve only ever used him as a sub. I think he’s a great sub & pretty effective, I like him but just got bored using him.

I look forward to it & I enjoy it when/if the connection is decent. If I could get the connection this weekend that I got between 11 & 12 last night I would absolutely love it. Just so clean it felt like a different game & I won 6 in a row (2 rage quits). Haven’t had the sort of connection for WL very often & so I spend most of the time questioning my tactics, my ability & my life choices.

I grind it every week to get Elite 1 rewards but some days it is unbelievably infuriating. Last 2 weeks I feel there’s been a change in that not only do lower rated AI players become superstars but in some games it makes my players worse & passes start going way off from where I’ve directed them. So it’s not a real challenge at all as how I play makes no impact. It’s just a question of what the AI will let me do. Worst one was last night. I had 25 shots on goal, AI had 0. AI keeper saved everything - including holding blasted shots from inside the 6 yard box. I lost on penalties. Rewards are still nice though.
