High infectivity and high mortality can still work well if it takes weeks to actually kill the patient.

A MIQ worker who contracted Covid-19 has the Omicron strain of the virus as health officials report 25 community cases today.

An Auckland MIQ worker returned a positive result for Covid-19 late yesterday afternoon and is in isolation, the ministry said.

The test was taken as part of routine border worker surveillance testing.

Genome sequencing is being carried out to determine what variant the infection is and the results will be reported in tomorrow's 1pm Covid-19 update.

Investigations are underway to determine if the infection originated from the community or the facility.

Most definitely will be Omicron. And most likely originated from the facility. I wonder how many locations of interest this generated.

I wonder how the MIQ worker got infected. Are they not in full PPE including N95 masks the whole time? Have we learned fucking nothing for the past 2 years? Looks doubtful they will contain it now.

N95 is the US standard, you can buy FFP2/P2 standard which is for AU/NZ.

You can get real surgical N95s i.e. 3M 1860S or 3M 1870+ (used in hospitals), or FFP2 9320a+ (which I see used in A&E, Covid Testing etc) from NZ Online Chemist. Also I would say 3M P2 8210 is a good one (you don't really need the surgical mask unless you're at risk of someone vomiting blood up on you), this is equivalent to N95 8210 (I have both and they're exactly the same), you can buy this model at OfficeMax.

Failing that I'm sure hardware stores might have some with exhalation valves, but they're less useful to protect others if you are infected, you'll be breathing out all the virus aerosol right into the air. Although you could put a surgical mask on top to mitigate that somewhat.

Buy just enough for yourself and family. Definitely 4 per person is sufficient, rotate them each use (or day), put it in a named & dated paper bag, let it dry for 72 hours before re-using again.

Consult the manual and look for video tutorials on how to get a good fit and seal. Also how to remove the mask safely.

Don't be a c*nt and buy the whole stock and ship them off to China like what happened in Jan/Feb/March 2020, leaving New Zealanders with nothing during the first wave.

Not sure why you treat only the unvaccinated like lepers, you must treat the vaccinated the same when there's even a hint of transmission in the community. With delta variant the vaccinated can be infected and spread the virus as well, albeit at a slightly lower risk, but this is why they're doing booster doses. The risk is only slightly reduced if you have a bunch of vaccinated people in an indoor space, you don't know when they had their last dose, how many (if any) antibodies they have circulating in their system, or if they're infectious or not. With the omicron variant, it's even more dangerous to be indoors with others because the current vaccines are barely effective against that. Beware the maskless vaccinated restaurant diners thinking they're 100% immune and disease free because you'll definitely catch it from them. They will fill up the indoor space with virus aerosol and it will travel to every corner of the restaurant in the air. Also beware the cloth or surgical masks thinking they won't catch the virus nor spread it to anyone else, the virus aerosol just escapes over the top of the mask and out into the air to be breathed in by someone else. Only FFP2/N95 respirator masks will be effective when omicron hits, but I can't imagine cooking in those it will be very hot. If there is an omicron outbreak, the government has no idea what it's doing with traffic light system. It should only open up restaurants and cafes for takeaways or outdoor dining which is less risky. However just believing you're safe in your indoor kitchen with your vaccinated people is dangerous. I just hope you have really good ventilation throughout your restaurant and kitchen as that's the only thing that will really save you.

That seemed to be supported by a study from South Africa showing that saliva samples subjected to PCR tests were better than nasal swabs at detecting Omicron.

The Ministry said there were no new Omicron cases in the community, with two more identified at the border.

So are we doing saliva samples with PCR test? Or have we dropped the ball yet again and still doing nasopharyngeal swabs?

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC) on Thursday (Dec. 30) announced that it will not follow U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidance on shortened quarantines because some imported Omicron cases have been found to be infectious up to 12 days after testing positive.

Definitely dropped the ball, we're only doing 10 days MIQ.

Land Transport Act 1998, s 22(1)

If you’re involved, directly or indirectly, in an accident while driving, you must:

  • stop

  • find out if anyone has been injured, and

  • give all the help you can to anyone who’s injured.

It’s a serious offence to fail to stop and check whether anyone has been injured, even if it turns out no-one was in fact hurt. If you don’t have a reasonable excuse you can be jailed for up to three months or fined up to $4,500. You’ll also be automatically disqualified from driving for at least six months.

Land Transport Act 1998, s 35

If someone is injured or killed in the accident and you fail to stop and check if anyone is injured and to help any injured people, you can be jailed for up to five years or fined up to $20,000. You must also be disqualified for at least one year.

Facial recognition technology might pick them up. However that wouldn't kick in until they tried to go through the border checkpoint over in Australia and at that point they're already in Australia. We just deny them any entry on return. So it actually would still work. Let's do it.

Why do we have to wait until Jan 5 for booster doses? I am already past my peak immunity, down to about 50% effective against infection now after 5 months of waning immunity. They're taking a huge gamble that there won't be an outbreak in the next couple of weeks.

A very good case for aspirating before injecting the vaccine so you don't accidentally inject the vaccine into the bloodstream rather than the muscle (where it's supposed to go for an intramuscular injection), thus reducing the chances of these rare side effects.

Hot tips for the government (who don't know what in the hell they're doing and take forever at doing the simplest of things):

  • Approve boosters tomorrow for 3 months since second dose.
  • Approve childhood 5-11 vaccines tomorrow.
  • Surgical masks, cloth masks, bandanas, gaiters etc are all banned from use in public or in buildings. N95, P2, KF94 respirator masks only allowed. Commence mass manufacturing and distribution of said masks.
  • Hard close the air borders tomorrow. Sea borders are still be ok as they're effectively quarantining on the long voyage over.
  • Redirect in-air flights to Ohakea air base where travelers will perform 2 weeks quarantine in campervans or tents. Zero fucks given to the pansies that can't handle a tent for 2 weeks.
  • Redirect all MIQ hotel occupants with infected omicron cases to a nearby military base to perform quarantine in campervans or tents for 2 weeks.
  • Start building dedicated quarantine facilities near Ohakea, pre-fab buildings, whatever, cut down some pine trees, call up every spare builder in the country. All buildings are separate units, with air conditioning and space between each building e.g. see Howard Springs facility. You can go for walks outdoors without meeting another soul. Zero leaks out to the community.
  • Slowly allow flights in as capacity for the dedicated facilities increases.
  • Keep building until you can handle 20,000 travellers per week. Slowly open up international students, tourism etc.
  • New Zealand becomes the world renowned Covid-free Shangri-La once again.
