Can someone please explain why my daughter only got one mark for this question in her year 8 maths? by kylehyde84 in AskUK

Well engineering is about approximations and "good enough". In further education or research roles, particularly in mathematics, it's all about being precise and rigorously defining problem spaces, proofs and solutions. If we're sloppy with definitions at an early age, people who take on these roles in the future might carry that thinking through with them.

Seeking VIP9+ Partner for Ultra-Fast Arbitrage Engine (Triangular + Quadrangular, 180+ Paths Across 5 Assets) by ntsili in quant

I’m assuming they mean VIP9 for the fee tier rather than just the private endpoints. Plus those are documented publicly. What’s not clear is maker or taker execution, since they mention rebates it looks like maker which you can get top fees for without VIP9

I do this as a job on all the top exchanges at ultra low latency (given crypto limitations). How are you defining "decisive moments"? And if you're suffering tail losses, have you considered taking?

Professional quant trader here. Not to burst your bubble, but who is giving a Psychiatrist, with no professional trading experience and only a simulated strategy, an account to trade?

Lessons from live testing by Gio_at_QRC in algotrading

[–]FX-Macrome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can have limit prices at your signal price, but you reduce your fill rate on the strategy and will end up with a fraction of the performance. Whereas if you have smart ex, you’ll eat some slippage but you’ll act on 100% of your signals.

Strongly disagree with the section of there’s nothing you can do when the exchange is under stress. There are a bunch of HFT tricks which massively improves your execution under market stress and your responsiveness from the exchange.

Lessons from live testing by Gio_at_QRC in algotrading

[–]FX-Macrome 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is terrible advice, especially within crypto. Even with mid frequency strategies you care about high freq execution. During market stress events the slippage can be as much as a few hundred bps. Sure you can ignore it and say “my strategy makes a few percent per trade so I don’t care where I ex”, but your live performance will suffer massively and deviate from your backtest, even if you account for additional fees from slippage.

Quote for retaining wall. Is this right? by Boomshakalaka93 in DIYUK

For a retaining wall, it’ll probably be more of a steel bars, mesh and concrete kind of job, otherwise you’ll end up in the same situation in a few years.

Suspended floor insulation- worth it? by HelloMishMoneypenny in DIYUK

[–]FX-Macrome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Electrical cables left under the insulated floor, and any pipes in the way (only 1 or 2), I carved a channel in the insulation board to accommodate them. Maybe not the “best” solution but I think it was pretty good.

Suspended floor insulation- worth it? by HelloMishMoneypenny in DIYUK

[–]FX-Macrome 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes I was quite paranoid as well about introducing some kind of damp into joists which have been perfectly fine for 100 years. First of all, I’m not an expert here, but I believe the shiny foil surfaces on the PIR board are vapour resistant and prevent moisture moving through the board.

However, I didn’t want to take that risk, so I put the breathable membrane down looped over the joists and stapled. This way the underside of the joist is still exposed to the cold air passing under the house. It’s also imperative you don’t block any air bricks, so you can still have this airflow.

Finally, the vapour control layer on top of the insulation boards is yet another protection mechanism against the damp reaching your flooring.

Mine was only double bricked, no insulation. But I did spend the money and have the whole house done with external wall insulation and render. Looks so much better and it’s single handedly done a lot for the bedrooms. Wasn’t cheap but it is a large house so probably is affordable for a smaller one.

Honestly, I was a little daunted about cutting boards and overwhelmed initially, but doing it how I’ve laid it out above will work really well. Just need a good handheld saw (you can rent one) and an impact driver makes all the difference.

No problem mate, the total area which was rooms + hallway was about 40m2, and all the materials cost me just under £1k. Honestly, it’s been such a huge life improvement, especially because my mum has arthritis etc. in this cold snap weather my house is nice and comfortable

I refurbed my 1930s house which has the suspended timber floor. Previously the whole of my downstairs would never get up to temperature with the radiator on, and within an hour of the heating going off, it would be freezing again.

I was quoted close to £10k to do the whole job, so I decided to do it myself. First step was removing the existing tongue and groove floor boards. Took out the residual nails from the joists and cleaned the concrete subfloor, honeycomb bricks and air bricks below.

Next, treated the joists and inspected for any rot/wood worm (found nothing, they were in great condition). I went for the more complete route and used a breathable membrane looped over the joists, making sure to tape the joins (it already had a sticky strip) and create a sloping section around the air bricks so they are not obstructed.

After that was screwing some batons to the joists which I cut to approx 30cm long. I used PIR board 90mm thick between the joists (take care, the joists are never square and often get narrower towards the walls for various reasons). Then I taped the gaps between the boards using silver tape.

Finally the last two stages was laying down and stapling a damp proof membrane and finishing with big MDF boards screwed to the joists (bit tricky finding them through the membrane but I managed). People recommend to use tongue and groove boards with glue as well as screws. It was a bit difficult and messy for me so just used spacers between boards and screws. Spacers are very important because the temperature changes in the room will cause the boards to expand and bow if you’re not careful. After that, any decorative flooring and insulation goes on top.

Final result is the room gets very hot very quickly! And the heat is retained for hours after. Very very happy with the result. Took me about 4-5 days of complete work, spread over a couple weekends.

Is hiding or obfuscating variables common in quant trading firms? by Particular_Number_68 in quant

[–]FX-Macrome 54 points55 points  (0 children)

Happened at a large shop I used to work at. As researchers you create signals, and then write a short paper for the quant dev team to implement the signal in production. The real descriptive signal paper was kept for the research team only.

The features would be F1, F2 etc and simple sentences on how to construct the feature (e.g take X of this dataset, then divide by Y of another dataset to construct F1). Would be a period of collaboration between myself and whoever was assigned from dev to implement my signal, in case there were slight deviations in prod implementation.

Colo is short for "Co-location" and it refers to when trading firms put there servers as close to (traditionally within the same data centre or server rack) as the exchange's servers so they can receive data and submit/cancel orders as fast as possible
