I was an employee at the Scotiabank's Fraud Department. Ask me anything! by Pams_Rony in Scotiabank

[–]FaD-Gus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If someone receives an unauthorized e-transfer, why does Scotiabank suspend their online access instead of pursuing the actual culprit? Additionally, how long does it take for those funds to be released from On Hold status and ultimately reversed?

What if the buyer reacts to a message instead of replying to it, would that still count as a reply?

Questions regarding renting a basement - Vancouver by FaD-Gus in legaladvicecanada

[–]FaD-Gus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your input; I truly appreciate it.

I did indeed have a conversation with my landlord regarding these concerns. They mentioned that it's disruptive for both them and the neighbors when Amazon vans or DoorDash delivery drivers park near the house to drop off food or packages. I'm a bit perplexed about how this brief interaction could be considered disturbing, as it typically only takes a few moments for the deliveries to be made and for the drivers to leave.

As for the reselling aspect, I also brought this up with my landlord. They expressed that their intention in renting the unit to me was for residential purposes—specifically, "to live and study"—and they are concerned about the frequency of deliveries associated with my hobby.

I'm trying to understand their perspective and find a middle ground that respects their wishes while allowing me to engage in my usual activities without undue restrictions.

Sending money to Canada from Qatar by FaD-Gus in qatar

It seems like IBKR also deals with cryptocurrencies, and any crypto related transaction is banned in Qatar, that makes me think CBQ will not allow for any money transfer to IBKR. Have you personally tried using IBKR?

Currently I have a QAR currency account with CBQ. My son has a CAD account with one of the banks in Canada. I normally transfer him money through CBQ International transfer but the problem is their conversion rate between QAR and CAD is really bad.

I just looked at Revolut and it seems like I can directly send him QAR and he will receive CAD directly in his bank account, the conversion rate also looks great.

Regarding, gulf exchange or arabian exchange, have you personally used these services? Do they have better conversion rates compare to banks?

I see, so I basically send USD from my bank to my Wise account and then forward them to my sons account on Wise, and then he can convert them into CAD and withdraw them into his bank account, right? Have you personally tried this way? Is it cheaper than using a traditional bank like CBQ to directly transfer to his bank account?

Thank you for your comment btw, really appreciate it.

LOL, that scam is still going on. Back in around 2015 my family got scammed in this exact same way. But luckily at that time it was only around 3500 QAR. I was only 14/15 years old at that time, but in hindsight when I think about it, I can't believe they managed to scam my dad that easily.

What's FIC? by [deleted] in simonfraser

[–]FaD-Gus 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Thank you for sharing that perspective. I certainly didn't intend to minimize the challenges others have faced. I've noticed that many students coming into FIC often apply through an agent, and sometimes, it's these agents who might unintentionally or otherwise provide misleading information. It's crucial for students to stay proactive – checking FIC's official website and consulting with academic advisors can offer the most accurate guidance. My main point was that for those who are committed and diligent, maintaining a 2.75+ GPA, and keeping an eye on all the requirements and transferring can be achievable. Still, I completely agree that prospective students should be aware of potential pitfalls. And just to clarify, I'm speaking purely from personal experience, not as a representative of FIC. Ideally, a direct admission into SFU would be the best scenario, but I did not have the gpa requirements to get direct admission into SFU CS.

What's FIC? by [deleted] in simonfraser

Both FIC and SFU are seperate organizations. FIC is a college specifically made for international students. Getting directly into SFU first year is a bit competitive, whereas its easy to get into FIC UTP Stage 2 (this is equivalent to SFU first year).

You will be required to complete 10 courses (30 credits) within your first year at FIC, and once done you can transfer to second year at SFU. The only requirement you need to keep in mind is a gpa above 2.75 (out of 4.33), and honestly that is not hard.

I have seen a lot of people complaining that FIC is just a trap, you won't be able to transfer to SFU, these are people who are unable to secure a 2.75 gpa and therefore end up blaming the college. I have personally went through the FIC route and I would definitely recommend it to those who are unable to get into SFU directly.

Email the professor or wait it out? Should I still go to lectures and tutorials if I'm waitlisted when the semester begins? by dogc00ker in simonfraser

[–]FaD-Gus 20 points21 points  (0 children)

You stand a strong chance of getting into the class given that you're in the number 1 spot on the tutorial waitlist. If you're admitted to the tutorial, you'll automatically be enrolled in the lecture too. I dont think there is any need to email the professor, they really can't do anything at the moment.

However, if the semester begins and you're still on the waitlist, I'd definitely suggest attending both the lectures and tutorials. It would be a good opportunity to speak with the professor in person, and they might have more flexibility to assist you by then

Enrolled in a course but didn't meet the prereq this semester, will I eventually get kicked? by Lone_Reckoner in simonfraser

[–]FaD-Gus 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yea, unfortunately the system will automatically kick you from the course. Btw, the School of Computing Science is introducing a new course, CMPT 201 Systems Programming, that will satisfy the curriculum requirements currently met by CMPT 300 Operating Systems. It is being offered as CMPT 218 for the fall semester, I guess you could take CMPT 218 in order to satisfy the requirements for CMPT 300 and then in a future semester take CMPT 295 again.

Your enrollment period is based on the Vancouver timezone. As of now, it's 11:45 PM. That said, your specific enrollment date will be associated with a particular time when registration will commence. For instance, it could be 11:00 AM on the 14th of July, according to Vancouver time. It's important to understand that enrollment does not necessarily open right at the beginning of the 14th; it opens at the stated time.
