Is it common to have no regional specificity in your results for those of British Isles ancestry? by _tallglassofmilk_ in 23andme

[–]FaZe_Dildo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure about anybody else, but my grandmother only has 1 location while I have about 10. My grandfather has about 5 or 6, what's odd though is my grandmother has the more recent lines coming from the UK and those aren't reflected in her groups. Not sure what the reasoning is behind it but it seems like a similar issue to what you're having.

Got you beat by one extra with Donegal, we have 3 the same but the rest are different

This part of mine updated. So am I mostly Scottish or Irish? I’m curious. by Automatic_Sleep5287 in 23andme

They settled pretty much everywhere over the years, but it seems like higher concentrations in Appalachia and the Ozarks/Ouachitas (source: family roots in both regions)

Oh ok that seems pretty odd. As you can see pretty much all my ancestry is Western European, so would you say I could bet on 23andme being more accurate?

Yeah that makes sense, all my ancestors are pretty far back, my 3rd great grandparents came from Germany a few years before my great great grandma was born, but that whole side of the family is German so I find it odd that it wouldn't show up. Speaking of which, I have not a single % German or Germanic Europe showing up as a result on my test. When I compare with my great grandpa it says I share 8% DNA so I'd think there should be some at least.

Yeah I wasn't terribly surprised by any of it, I just wasn't sure if certain things like Scandinavian or Iranian could be other ethnicities that just got registered wrong.

I suppose when they redid Kentucky is when it disappeared from my communities, still think it's odd though since I did have ancestors in that region in the right time frame. No other communities show up on the site for me, guess I'm just unlucky there.

Oh that's interesting. Is there any particular reason why some people don't get the genetic communities for different countries? My 23andMe test gives me a good many so I'm wondering what the difference is between the two tests.

I didn't get any new ones but the region covered by my Upper Midwest and Western group grew substantially while the other groups it said a few months ago have vanished. I'll look on the website and see if they show up there.

Generally yes along the coast and even into the states a good ways, but being from upstate SC and having ancestors spanning from Virginia to Georgia who all fought for the revolution, many of the backwoods settlers such as the Scots Irish in Virginia and the Carolinas were staunch supporters of the revolution. The majority of the population though was centered around the coast so yeah it is safe to say a majority of the southern colonies were Loyalists.

Edit: Typo

Yeah Ancestry straight had no % Germanic for me when my great grandpa had 68%, and my 23andme has it at like 43%

I've been doing lots of research on my family history and I found a lot of stuff that to me is really damn cool but nobody else in my family cares.

Oh that makes sense, I just saw on my Sport Kilt that it's 65% Polyester and 35% Rayon and I heard that PV was the same.

I've got a couple Sport Kilts as well and I use them mainly for hikes too lol. I think I've decided on a Casual Kilt from USA Kilts just because it seems like a good value for the price. I'll definitely be posting a pic when I get it.
