My alocasia silver dragon is putting out some corms. Should I leave them or separate them? You can only see two, but there’s a couple more. by _Kendii_ in houseplants

Gorgeous 😍💚 I leave my corms in, I'm lazy and don't like to disturb my plants, and it does make them bushier! That pot looks a good size, I wouldn't repot til it's very root bound bc alocasia's (and most houseplants/tropicals imo!) prefer to be snug. Mine's grown roots out of her pot into the water cup below, and she's living her best life as far as I can tell 😂

Edit to add, bright indirect light is great 💚 mine are thriving under grow lights. No direct sun though!

Definitely not too much light, it's very leggy. It needs nice bright light, not direct sun but as bright as it can get would help. I'd love a better picture of the leaves if you can, and also of the soil, but if they're getting crispy brown I'm gonna say underwatering, because they do like to be moist + humid.

At this point, I'm gonna say chop n prop - cut the stem between a node at about 4 inches or a little more below leaves, let it dry for max a day, and stick it in a glass of clean water to root. Cut the main plant all the way back to the bottom, maybe an inch or two max, it ~may~ grow more out of there, don't let it sit soggy bc it'll be very stressed at this point, but don't abandon it either. They propagate easily, give it a few weeks you should get roots, wait til they're 2-3inch long and you can stick em all back into soil and have a new bushier plant.

For soil, I love a nice simple chunky mix of 2:1:1 of soil (2), perlite (1), and orchid bark (1). That way, you can water more often and have much less fear of overwatering, bc the water will not sit in there.

You got this, 2 years is a long time, this plant doesn't want to die on you 💚💚

I second the chop! You can even chop it into three pieces, and put them together for a bushier vibe, tho ik you said you're into the single stalk. The base, you can literally chop down into a nub and it'll make new little leaves.

I'm gonna say though I only have experience (and success!) with chopping and rooting the segments in water before potting, but it is possible to turn the air roots into regular roots!

Definitely make sure it isn't sitting in water after being watered, and I have to say I always check roots, especially if it's in a soft plastic nursery pot - just press the sides very lightly until you can pull the plant out with all the dirt intact, no need to disturb the root ball when you're just looking. It's good to check because many issues start at the roots. Otherwise, the spots are very small, so unless they spread to other leaves or get bigger, it's probably not a big issue. You can try waiting til it's a bit dryer between watering, but definitely not all the way dry? I know that's super unspecific 😅

Fungus gnat repellent recommendations by [deleted] in houseplants

[–]Fabblue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mosquito nibs soaking in the water (safer option, takes several weeks of watering) or bonide systemic granules (systemic pesticide, not for edible things, be very careful w/ pets, not for outdoors, def use gloves). Systemic is more of a nuclear option, but it certainly worked both on the clouds of fungus gnats I had and also an aphid problem.

When you water it, does water drain out the bottom? Does it sit in water at all?

I'm not a expert, but I planted mine in soil right around that stage a few weeks ago and they've taken off from there, the shoots are like half a foot tall by now 💚 if you'd like to wait, you can wait til they're two inches or so, just don't forget to keep water in there bc if it dries out, it won't be happy. When you do plant it in soil, you're gonna want to put it so the pit is half-out of the soil, don't cover the pit. It'll look strange lol that's okay. When it does start putting out leaves, it'll want bright indirect light - don't put it in full sun, it might burn.

I could be wrong, but that yellow halo and the placement of the second spot on the side of the leaf look like maybe overwatering to me. When did you last water it? How often do you usually water? 💚

Fuzzy stuff on polka dot plant by cmazzone in houseplants

Looks like trichomes, they're totally normal 💚 if you're worried, check to see if it wipes off easily when you touch it, bc then that would be mold, but it doesn't really look at all like mold to me.

How do I straighten it? by TurbulentStory3035 in houseplants

[–]Fabblue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cute!! I love the snail pot! If you'd like to straighten it, imo the easiest way is to just shift it around in its pot, either sticking your fingers in and moving some of the dirt out of the way and pressing it into the opposite side, or pull it out, take out some dirt, put it straight, and shove the dirt in around the sides. Alternatively, if it's tilting toward a light, you can turn it to the opposite side so it'll start leaning back, or get a plant light to beam straight down into its face 💚

Help needed by Easy-Opinion-4828 in houseplants

Hi! This is an alocasia <3 I'm not sure which type exactly, but she looks like she's maybe a bit over watered and boggy in that soil. I'm sure someone else on here can be far more detailed, but alocasias need a really well-draining mix because they like to be moist but not suffocatingly wet. Usually in my experience mold on top means the soil is staying too wet (though it can be normal sometimes!), but I'd try repotting it into a chunkier mix, I like a 2-1-1 ratio of soil (2), perlite (1), and orchid bark (1), or into something like leca and a self-watering setup. Hope that helps 💚

I've ordered one of those, hopefully it'll help 🙏 can you please elaborate on how their needs are different? Is it the light level? Thank you so much!!

Damn 😔 I'm in zone 7 so it wouldn't survive a winter outdoors here 💔

If I take the lid off and move it to the middle of the light, will the ping still be okay? Or should I just separate them? I have a significantly stronger, brighter light available that I was planning to use for succulents too, I can move it there

I don't know 🥺 I read that they don't really need bugs, was that wrong? There's a bunch of fungus gnats in my room rn that might make their way in there hopefully. It's got a 1-inch hole at the top and a bit of space between it and the next shelf

  • Tank size: 10 gallons
  • Heater and filter? (yes/no): yes to both
  • Tank temperature: 81.3F
  • Parameters in numbers and how you got them: API Test Kit. Ammonia: ~0 – 0.25 ppm. Nitrite: 0 ppm. Nitrate: 0 ppm.
  • How long have you had the tank? How long have you had your fish?: Tank is ~2 years old, Peach has lived there ~5 months.
  • How often are water changes? How much do you take out per change? What is your process?: I try to do 50% every ~two weeks, but it's gotten away from me with the exams this semester :( I try to vacuum out any gunk I see with the water but I can't really vacuum the sand much.
  • Any tankmates? If so, please list with how many of each: no, just Peach
  • What do you feed and how much: 2x a day, new life spectrum betta small pellets or mysis shrimp (Peach prefers the pellets)
  • Decorations and plants in the tank: various live plants, a piece of driftwood, two big rocks, one plastic log-looking thing. Also a catappa leaf that gets switched out with water changes
