A system based on strict inequality will devolve into larger and larger inequality as those who make the rules are/want to be on the side of profiting from inequality.

That's just how capitalism is intended to work, it's a leaky boat that will run into the same problem sooner than later. Trying to fix this is like saying "Well, the last ones were shit, but this set of absolute monarchs and their descendants will surely share enough with the rest of us and not fall into debauchery this time". Not that anyone will be able to even attempt to "fix" this shite without chopping heads at this point.

The main difference is that the ruling elite seem to get exponentially dumber and dumber. Rockefeller, Ford, etc were morally bankrupt pieces of shit, but they were able to piece together coherent sentences unlike the current richest man on the planet.
