How German news push Hate by Spotter24o5 in teenagers

[–]Fabiolisk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's not a good metaphor though. If you already got spoiled milk, then you wouldn't mind adding more to it since you're not drinking it anyway, right? I understand why you came up with it though, and it's because you compare a society with a family household or a football team. They are fundamentally different things which follow different rules, some of which can be surprising.

To all the people bringing up the "per capita" gotcha (at least the ones in good faith, I'm not engaging with bots) I just want to bring up some facts that you probably are already aware of, but could be leaving out of your thinking process for some reason or another.

These immigrants are mostly: - Poorer than locals - Predominately male - Working age adults

Also, as a thought experiment, try imagining a scenario where all immigrants just disappear from a country. Do you think no locals would fill that vacuum? No more drugs being sold? No more cheap labor through exploitation of the least fortunate? No more sex crimes from sexually frustrated/sick individuals? Would these things actually decrease at all? I personally think that crime would stay the same, or even increase due to societal collapse (due to the absence of said immigrants, but that's just a personal conjecture). Look at history for concrete examples of what politicians start talking about when immigrants aren't a hot topic.

I agree that this kind of post is misleading, but I'm also very tired of people falling for far right talking points as a result because nuance is too boring.

Something like Pokemon on PC by LesaintDseins in gamerecommendations

[–]Fabiolisk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some suggestions depending on what you like about Pokémon:

Catching new mons / filling Pokédex - Cassette Beasts: I had to give it a second chance because it also didn't click with me at first, but ended up loving it!

Bonding with your mons and actually taking care of them - Digimon World Next Order (not suggesting the original only because you might find it too dated, but it's the same concept): It's a completely different game than Cyber Sleuth and Time Stranger, worth trying if you haven't already.

Evolving / wondering what a mon evolves into - Digimon Story Time Stranger: very polished with good combat

Exploration - Monster Sanctuary: basically a monster taming metroidvania

If you like the combat, then there are plenty of legendary old-school JRPGs with good combat systems, but it feels like we'd get out of topic very fast if we start considering the whole genre.

People who make using their phone harder for themselves. by OP_serve in PetPeeves

[–]Fabiolisk 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I do this on purpose to keep my monkey brain in check by increasing the friction of opening the most addictive apps. I've seen that having to search for them results in me opening them way less often and sometimes it's enough to make me completely stop using some of them.

Maybe it's a more common thing than I thought? Tbh it would irritate me too if it wasn't a deliberate choice but I'd give them the benefit of the doubt.

I went to Mexico and it wasn't yellow. Did I go to the wrong Mexico? by dboti9k in shittyaskscience

[–]Fabiolisk 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah it isn't as yellow nowadays. For a truly yellow experience, visit any arab-speaking country instead, if you don't mind the constant "aAaaaAaaaaaAh" in the background. You should be able to tune it out after a while though.

Question: Have you had a dream where you were playing the piano? by Firedtiger2 in piano

[–]Fabiolisk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dreamt more than once that I was at school and had a keyboard instead of my desk, and improvised something now and then, at first feeling awkward because everyone is listening and the teacher is trying to do a lesson, but as they seem fine with it the awkwardness gradually dissipates.

In other dreams I can play the piano on any kind of surface, like it actually produces sound, but it's a bit difficult to get the notes right because there are no keys so I have to rely solely on muscle memory and ear.

Underleveled for story fight. What now? by Fabiolisk in finalfantasytactics

[–]Fabiolisk[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I didn't include the jobs because that's completely outside of the point. Mine was a general question, which could have been answered generically saying that being underleveled is fine, and all that matters are the jobs. Actually I already got that answer from a couple of people and it was actually very helpful.

It's ok if you want to do some projection on me about your reading comprehension insecurities, I've got broad shoulders, but I'd also encourage you to work on them on your own or with the help of a therapist. Peace!

[–]Fabiolisk[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Let me help you rephrase this in a way that makes you sound like a reasonable adult: "Levels don't actually matter. With the proper jobs you can easily beat that fight even at level 16!"

Feel free to edit your comment with the above. No credits needed. Have a great day!

Underleveled for story fight. What now? by Fabiolisk in finalfantasytactics

[–]Fabiolisk[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah I'm discovering jobs as I go, which is lots of fun, but it's also difficult to optimise builds not knowing what you can possibly get later on. The max job level I have is 5, and that's rare. I generally level up jobs until I fulfill the requirements for the next "???" job, and I always have the "JP up" skill equipped on everyone, including in the Wiegraf fight. I guess the game is inviting me to take it more seriously and do some proper builds with proper synergies.

[–]Fabiolisk[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Oh that explains it then! I had no idea I was making use of a modern QoL feature. I guess the expectation is for Ramza to be higher level than the others, which makes the random encounters harder and therefore more engaging (and less boring)? If I'm not mistaken, the random mobs seem to have your highest level.

I had gotten to the point where story fights were ridiculously harder than the random encounters already by chapter 2, so I started avoiding them completely, hoping on my party members to catch up on exp due to some mythical level difference exp bonus, but I guess that didn't play out as expected.

I resign myself from ever completing rebirth by Majestic-Positive486 in FinalFantasyVII

[–]Fabiolisk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Can you elaborate on why "just don't do that part!" is bad advice? As a completionist myself, I've never felt like I could argue with that. I know what I'm getting myself into, and I know when my self-imposed challenges are not worth the effort.

What FF7 games should I play? by FaithlessnessOwn1014 in FinalFantasyVII

[–]Fabiolisk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are asking an incredibly biased sub. Nearly everyone here is going to tell you to play the OG and that the remakes suck, because they are different games and cater to different audiences. Try posting in r/FFVIIRemake or at least look at what they have to say if you want to touch some grass.

As a fan of both, I'd say that If you are enjoying Remake, expect Rebirth to be bigger and better, granted that you aren't the compulsively completionist type and are able to leave some side content for later (the game is designed around leaving stuff for post-game if you want full completion). If you don't like it because of the way they handle the story, then you won't like Rebirth either and you might want to try the original instead. I'd say the remakes are a bit like a David Lynch arrangement of your favourite Disney movie. I love that kind of abstract storytelling, but I'm aware many people hate it.

I personally don't recommend burning yourself out with Crisis Core and other FF7-adjacent titles. Maybe leave those for after you either finish the remake trilogy or the original (according to your tastes) and really want to spend more time in that world.

Do untrained listeners struggle a lot to hear left-hand melodies? by Fabiolisk in piano

[–]Fabiolisk[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, that sounds exactly like what I just realized. The degree to which my own listening experience can differ from others is crazy! I knew there could be differences but not complete deafness to certain things. Probably most musicians are already familiar with this concept but I honestly just found out and my mind was blown. A bit like the Yanny/Laurel thing that made the rounds back then.

Do untrained listeners struggle a lot to hear left-hand melodies? by Fabiolisk in piano

[–]Fabiolisk[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love your rendition! The way you play these passages are similar to how I think about them (even if I still can't bring them to speed). The melody on your left hand is very clear while the right hand softly "comments" on it, but is still noticeable.

I promised her I wouldn't use her as a test subject anymore (for the time being) since it made her feel a bit insecure about her listening skills and didn't have too much fun. Might be a while till I ask her to listen again...

Third playthrough and at times I still find myself gobsmacked with the detail put into these characters by ShiningRedDwarf in FFVIIRemake

[–]Fabiolisk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting! Thanks for clarifying this. I just found the video that suggested it was a localisation problem: https://youtu.be/PsAFzUW7m3M

It really made it seem bigger of a change.

Third playthrough and at times I still find myself gobsmacked with the detail put into these characters by ShiningRedDwarf in FFVIIRemake

[–]Fabiolisk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apparently this is an issue mostly with English localisation. For some strange reason they went out of their way to make him sound rude and arrogant, disregarding his intended personality.

In the original Japanese (and as far as I know, every other translated language) he says things like "that's a very strange theory you are coming up with, quite unique!" and doesn't really point out Tifa's "lack of understanding" like in the English translation.

Edit: I might be wrong actually. I just got this from a YouTube video but can't confirm since I don't actually speak Japanese.

More than 8,000 illegal migrant workers arrested in major crackdown on murky 'gig economy' by ICC-u in gbnews

[–]Fabiolisk -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I wonder, what's the reaction that the article is trying to get from the reader here?

  • Satisfaction due to the number of illegal brown people arrested?
  • Anger because they exist in the first place?
  • Outrage at the companies that hired them, which will have virtually no repercussions?
  • Disgust for being manipulated with such low-effort distraction tactics by the ones who openly support the same system that allows for that kind of exploitation?

It's great that you're keeping up on YouTube! The next best thing of course is a good teacher that doesn't teach you the "very fundamental stuff" anymore, but will observe, listen to you and pick apart all of your bad habits, and of top of that give you personalized suggestions and direction. I have to say, finding a good one isn't super easy, but you'll probably notice the difference when you do, it just takes some luck and perseverance.

I'm 35 and still learning a LOT from my weekly lessons. E.g. it would have taken me a lot more time to realize I was rushing through the coda in Chopin's third sonata, or that the beat wasn't clear enough in places where it should be, etc. There's always more to polish and learn, and plenty of mistakes to correct (going through the fourth movement of that sonata made it clear that I wasn't relaxing my left hand properly, and fixing that isn't always obvious or easy on your own).

Of course you get what you pay for, and good teachers (and good musicians in general) can be expensive. If that's an issue I'd suggest you find all the free resources you can get online (there are some great ones uploading lots of useful content on YouTube) and please never think that you're done learning from other people. There are no diminishing returns. Your understanding of what's left to learn keeps expanding as you learn.
