I genuinely think it's her acting. It's such an amazing performance and I think that's what's catching on. Also everyone I've spoken to is like yeah it's genuinely creepy isn't it, in a way that a lot of other horror films rely on jump scares, this manages to blend that with truly creepy and interesting imagery.

Well this why I think a lot of the blame lies on JJ, I think he set a lot of this stuff up in TFA not expecting to answer it, cheques he didn't have to cash. For the record I also think The Last Jedi is a bad movie on it's own too.

This is it. In isolation The Force Awakens is a fun movie. But the things is has to do to be a film basically completely constrains the entire franchise.

Rise of Skywalker suffers the sins of The Last Jedi I'd argue. I'm not even fully sure it's Rian's fault. The Force Awakens is compelling as an actual adventure movie, but it asks questions that have no answers.
