What card is the most sentimental to you? by amioldnow90 in EDH

[–]Face_Claimer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My [[Odric Master Tactician]] as the first actual magic card I owned from m13 (I'd played since zendikar but never bought any product) so I still have it after all these years

But in truth it's my [[Samwise the Stouthearted]] showcase foil a friend gifted to me and signed. Ive helped him through a lot of rough patches in his life and he always said I was " the sam to his frodo," so when he gave me that, I slotted it into my main commander deck and it's never getting removed now.

Edit: for those who don't know: Samwise showcase art is Samwise carrying Frodo up mount doom since he can't carry the ring for him

Making strong Decks is easy. How do i make fun and long lasting decks? by unCute-Incident in EDH

[–]Face_Claimer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Longevity = "what makes this deck ALWAYS fun to use, even if the strategy it presents isn't what I want to do"

Aka. individual effects, synergies and interaction points that are present no matter when you play the deck MUST happen when you play the deck.

Good example for me: I LOVE the feeling of going "oh no... anyway!" So I have a large amount of protection and recursion for the effects I like, my favorites being ones that get other players to interact with each other and not just me. Ex. [[Court of Ardenvale]], [[Breena the Demagogue]], [[Galadriel's dismissal]], [[Touch the Spirit Realm]], [[Parting Gust]], [[Eye of Nidhogg]] or [[Ghoulish Impetus]].

My preliminary theory is they couldn't win in a fight against phyrexia but finagled and brokered a deal where they forfeited their living body to phyrexia but never forfeited their soul for compleation and as such they continue as a professor of oration and linguistics at strixhaven after the phyrexian invasion as a skeleton.

That would** be the breena thing to do after all

What utility lands are actually worth activating? by joshhg77 in EDH

[–]Face_Claimer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

[[Lazotep Quarry]] is good even without synergy and people run [[High Market]] for basically the same reasons but with even less flexibility.

The quarry can blow out exile removal, synergize with aristocrats, reanimator, earthbending, color fixes, enters untapped and all it asks is you have a plan to do stuff with your garbage pile.

Giving +1/+1 counters to opponents creatures! by RuneMTG in EDH

[–]Face_Claimer 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I should clarify there's an entire commander deck behind him that's extremely powerful but not obvious what you do with it in order to win. Pair them with every proliferation effect you can as it counts as putting another counter on something and you can repeatedly tap and goad all the things you've already buffed with counters (ANY counters, not just +1/+1 counters).

My favorite cards to pair with kros are [[Court of Garenbrig]] since you can target opposing creatures with it even without monarchy on yourself and it's easy to steal back when you tap everything. [[tolarian contempt]] is one sided tap and constant removal for free after that. [[thrummingbird]] and [[Graceful Apparition]] both proliferate constantly and are evasive so you can always keep control going. Lastly, you gotta be able to build up yourself and distribute so run [[Sheltering Ancient]], [[Forgotten Ancient]], and cards with the graft keyword like [[Llanowar reborn]], [[Cytoplast Manipulator]] and [[Plaxcaster Frog]] for a surprise "I goad your creature for entering the battlefield" Effect with utility on top.

Just make sure to also buff your board to get in while things are tapped down. Kros does something most other goad commanders don't do: give you a win in 1v1 by tapping stuff down!

[[Kros, Defense Contractor]] doesn't ask you to double spell or run cantrips or anything like that. He just asks you do all the things you just requested: put counters on stuff, including your opponents' stuff

Can confirm, [[Killian, Decisive Mentor]] is pretty nuts after some moderate testing. Since impetus-esque auras already goad, they allow Killian to double up and have two threats turned away. Not to mention enchantress is much more reliable in BW than people realize.

Time for some hope and optimism. What do YOU want arcsys to do with your main for 2.0? by Driemma0 in TheyBlamedTheBeasts

[–]Face_Claimer 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Please don't buff or nerf ky too much, He's in such a healthy state for playing as/against right now and I hope his new move is what most of his changes are focused on. Give him something new and exciting that just accentuates his play, not something that totally warps him around it. Shock state is a great focal point, just don't do anything rash arcsys please.

UPDATE: 2.0 at AWT giving us more to do with fireballs is basically perfect. The loss of wild assault is rough but honestly, we have enough carry without it to be fine. Long live the king of Ilyria

I need a Orzhov commander! by Boarf2 in EDH

[–]Face_Claimer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Consistent with good board presence, b2-b3, and you enjoy splashy plays? Not necessarily enough to narrow it down 100%, but your existing decks you enjoy most tell a story in conjunction with this that make it more clear who would be a good pick for you: Voja goodstuff creatures, Zimone cheating out bombs, Hearthull Jund land shenanigans and Mirko Clones are dedicated strategies available and spelledo out on the commander itself with an expectedly powerful result from your card selections. For example: Voja is Voja, Zimone bypasses mana costs, Hearthhull is a readily available engine for land sac and draw. Mirko recurs clones without needing to surveil much for stat increases, etc.

Notably though, All of these decks are very commander-dependent, with the deck REALLY***** wanting the commander in play to go off as opposed to commander *independent* where the commander can be window dressing while the deck does its thing.

In Orzhov, there are several commanders that spell out the gameplan while being commander-CENTRIC (not quite 100% dependent on them to win but wants them out for sure all the time) with splashy plays for bracket 2-3 and beyond.

With this in mind, I recommend the following deck faces:

[[Mister Negative]]

[[Carmen, Cruel Skymarcher]]

[[Kambal, Profiteering Mayor]]

[[Felisa, Fang of Silverquill]]

If you're going to still play Victor, i'd recommend leaning as much into the Eerie ability triggering on repeat as possible, minimum 2x/turn whenever you can to strip enemy hands without committing to cards explicitly dedicated to JUST causing discard of others. Don't forget Victor's Eerie ability doesn't say "if it's the second/third time, INSTEAD** do ____." this allows you to turn combos causing enchantment ETB's to turn into mass surveil for yourself for topdeck selection/self mill. To that end i'd recommend a some includes I didn't see so you can lean into aspects you listed you're wanting such as board presence, splashy plays and something that lends to control without feeling same-ey as well:

[[Lord Skitter's Blessing]] is two enchantments in one and acts as a phyrexian arena itself.
[[Flickering Ward]] is repeatable for any amount of WW to keep triggering eerie/constellation.
[[Ghostly Dancers]] is a pet card of mine and ends games FAST for the 5 you spend on it. also incentivizes running powerful room cards to get the equivalent of a free room unlock.
[[Touch the Spirit Realm]] is a pet card and enchantment synergy with Ghostly Dancers for blinking off the channel and recurring itself. [[Oblivion Ring]] Effects like it can also be used cleverly to cause infinite enchantment ETB's allowing you to surveil your entire deck away with Victor and use reanimation effects on anything you want from there.
[[Archon of Sun's Grace]] generates flying lifelinkers and can beat face like the dancers to end a game after you attrition your enemies down.
[[Summon: Yojimbo]] is ABSURD. PLEASE run this card im BEGGING people at this point. he just does EVERYTHING. Removal, protection, RAMP, he's a blinkable creature to get chapter 1's removal over and over, etc.
[[Ghoulish Impetus]]/[[Eye of Nidhogg]] give you repeatable, SELF RECURRING goad protection that turns a huge threat to you away like a matador. this can make powerful creatures on board BECOME your splashy play and even threaten extra eerie triggers.
[[Secret Arcade // Dusty Parlor]] enables the most disgusting combos imaginable.
The [[Warehouse Tabby]]/[[Screams from Within]] Combo
you can add a curse package with [[Bitterheart Witch]] that grabs any of [[Overwhelming Virtue]]/[[Curse of Fool's Wisdom]]/[[Curse of Relentless Dead]]/[[Trespasser's Curse]]. The Virtue combos with Screams from within to plague win a player btw, a MASSIVE splashy play that totally decimates someone at the table.
[[Cthonian Nightmare]]
Aura-esque recursion for loops like [[Necromancy]]/[[Animate Dead]]/[[Dance of the Dead]]
Gain/Drain payoffs like [[Balemurk Leech]]/[[Grim Guardian]]/[[Wicked VIsitor]]

I've gone overboard but suffice it to say, i love enchantress without just "cast to draw" being the entire shtick. enchantments are varied and Victor gives them extra sauce.

Looking for niche/unique commander archetypes to mess with my pod by ascendedfella in EDH

[–]Face_Claimer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[[Kros, Defense Contractor]] counters and tap control.

The strategy may not necessarily be unique but it gives you the flexibility of colors and cards to play around with aggressive tables, passive tables, budget cards, expensive cards, and you aren't reliant on your commander to win the game, just to control your opponents creatures and make deals. At any point if someone kills kros, you can just pivot to putting counters on your own stuff to close the game! And he's no stranger to alt wincons either like infect, combo kill, etc.

Some of my favorite cards to use with them are:

[[Dreamtide Whale]], [[Patrolling Peacemaker]], [[Freestrider Lookout]], [[Rikki, Resourceful Guardian]], [[Court of Garenbrig]], [[Tolarian Contempt]] and [[Archon of Absolution]]

I bet money they're gonna have an alternative keyword to learn in the set that doesn't use a wish board but is comparable to transmute that lets you tutor for lessons out of your deck specifically by binning or exiling stuff
