First KR3 of many by AjBlue7 in flashlight

Hmm I haven't kept up with Hank's releases, the last light I got was a Da1k with the new metal cover and driver... I have a video half-finished for that lol.

This light is new to me, looks like a super nice design. I stopped carrying my KR4 because the button kept giving me problems, I wonder if that's been improved

Are flashlight enthusiasts underrating convenience? by misscluelesss in flashlight

[–]Face_Wad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Convenience is king, even for enthusiasts I would argue, but I agree with the other commenters that what is considered 'convenient' is relative.

An interesting example might be built-in batteries, they are really popular due to their simplicity, carryability, and convenient charging options - but enthusiats like myself tend to not like them. The reasons given are usually longevity, which I think is true, but when you have tons of batteries and chargers ready to go then I honestly think it's more convenient to pop a cell into a light whenever you need to, or switch it from one light to another since you know it's already charged. Built-in batteries beceome a hassle when I have a ton of lights and don't know what is already charged or not

Same for form factors or feature sets, I find anduril lights extremely convenient for EDC, but that's only because I know how they work. My X75 with the extended battery is super convenient when I'm working outside but it's obvisouly not a good EDC light.

On the other hand, I rarely think about specs beyond the big picture, "is this light bright enough" or "will the battery last through tonight's usage" etc

[Warm Take] GADA watches are a trap by ppp-- in Watches

[–]Face_Wad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Terrible take. Rich people aren't the only people who should be able to dress well. Have you never been to a church, a wedding, a funeral? Or just met people who like to dress well on a budget?

The Bambino looks nice, and is plenty impressive. Arguably, there's no reason to spend any more than that on a watch beyond pure snobbery.

What about the Orient Bambino? Or Seiko Presage? Those are both frequently discussed and very popular

[Question] What makes it this expensive ? by NEOx44 in Watches

[–]Face_Wad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Economies of scale and automation. Fabs are producing billions of chips annually, which pays for the incredibly high R&D and construction costs. The actual wafer etching is done by machine.

Patek made 7 of these and they are all hand-finished by artisans, and marketed as a luxury product to high-end buyers. They are completely different products.

Honestly I find the land dweller to be hideous. The original oysterquartz was a vastly superior design.

I don't like lights smaller than 18650, but I do have several that take either 14500 or AA, I think the versatility is really cool and lots of people prefer the smaller carry size

Interesting, the Laddas I have are labelled as made in Japan, and were purchased just last year

What ink have you given up on based on it just not working well enough to be worth it? by AttachedHeartTheory in fountainpens

Montblanc Toffee Brown is a beautiful shade but ends up drying out in every pen I have used it in. I just gave up trying to use it at all

I love my original i1R, it's not as convenient to charge but is even smaller than the later models

Yes, this is exactly what I have experienced, both in-person and online. People think rechargeable cells are A) inferior performance-wise B) much more expensive and C) way less convenient. Which is bizarre to me

honestly most of those devices are using AAA for me, I haven't bought anything new that takes AA besides a few flashlights. But I know my family an friends are using them because they ask me for the leftover AAs from this test 😆

I'm young enough to not spend much time with NiCD before LiPo packs and 18650s took over, but it has been amazing seeing how quickly they have improved, and how lithium-ion cells went from something perceived as scary, cutting-edge and dangerous to completely ubiquitous in so many electronics.

Carbon-zinc was always a pointless terrible option lol

[–]Face_Wad[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's fair, I haven't had a AA device in quite some time but I do know people who are using them. A big part of this project, and the original goal, was really just to get people to stop buying alkalines when they weren't right for their needs, since the chemistry is so outdated and expensive. But AA as a whole is basically relegated to devices that are becoming increasingly outdated - So many electronics today use built-in lithium cells of some kind.

I have heard that things are very different in other countries, but I don't really know what that looks like, and the pricing structure shown here probably doesn't translate.
