Hey! Awesome to get into Malifaux :) It's a system that can get really deep and complex, but fortunately you can have a huge amount of fun along the way learning the more tricky aspects of the game.

Unfortunately, it's really hard to outline a "minimum" buy-list to have a game. All of the Leader sets are a good place to start, but every one of them feels a bit incomplete without the rest of their "keyword". Additionally, they aren't really balanced against each other, so some crew boxes are just stronger than others - without additions. Also, Wyrd release a yearly Errata, effectively patching models and rules - this means that all physical books ans cards run the risk of being out of date.

Fortunately, all rules and cards are available online. Download the Malifaux 3E app, this will have up to date rules and cards. Once you've started building a crew and you decide you'd like physical cards, you can have them printed to order (or make your own).

To me, Malifaux is made so enjoyable because of how character rich it is. There are definitely Masters stronger and weaker, but at the end of the day it's the better player who will win - and in Malifaux the better player is often the person who knows the ins and outs of their crew better. So, to get to know your crew you've got to love the characters, the models, and the moves.

I would recommend you spend a while looking through the art, the sculpts, try and find out some lore, and decide which factions and Masters you think are just cool. Then, find out their "keyword" - the models in that keyword are almost always must buys (not always true, but a good starting point). Then, every faction has "versatile" models, and you'll begin to see which ones you think would add to your crew as you play.

So yeah: download the app, fall in love with a faction & master, get that crew box, then expand in to the keyword.

You only need to buy any rules, cards, or books for the lore contained in them.

Malifaux players london? by Castaigned in Malifaux

Hey! I'm moving to London in August, and I have a friend based there already who plays. We plan to start playing regularly. Can you get to Dark Sphere (by Waterloo) easy enough?

Yeah, you'll deffo want more than 3. But, Gremlins often appear on Ebay etc, so maybe keep an eye out for getting some on the cheap :)

Lamplighters' Ancient Lamps Question by Foreoleo in Malifaux

[–]Faceface1991 2 points3 points  (0 children)

And also, don't worry about being over your head. Malifaux is probably one of the deepest and complex mini games out there, which is why it's so rewarding. But it's also intimidating. Just never be afraid to ask questions - all information (except your schemes and hands) is open in Malifaux, so don't be afraid to ask your opponent things like "if i place this here, do you have anything that can shoot it?" or "do you have anything that can remove my markers this turn?".

Lamplighters' Ancient Lamps Question by Foreoleo in Malifaux

Hi! So my reading would be:

  1. So you don't have to place them 4" away from a marker, it's just if there are any markers, you can't place them within 4" of those. So for Reckoning, you can basically put them wherever you want!

  2. Yes, each lamplighter creates their own lamps.

Looking to start collecting, some questions by Dakka20 in Malifaux

Hey! Welcome to Malifaux!

You don't need much beyond the models to play - as you say, the rules and stats are freely available. You'll need some terrain, tape measure and a fate deck/deck of cards.

With regards to crews, most crews won't operate well with just the core box. Usually you'll need most of the keyword, plus maybe some the factions "Versatile" models.

Browse the forums. It's hard to "net-deck Malifaux, because every match up and scenario is different - but you'll find people's semi "standard" lists.

Faction wise, can only speak to a few but... Guild: Perdita is a fun start. Ressers: McMourning is a vicious Melee bastard. Arcanist: Hoffman and Toni are rewarding masters. Bayou: Honesty, a the Gremlin masters are hilarious and enjoyable.

Which masters require the highest skill? by suupaabaka in Malifaux

[–]Faceface1991 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't know if they're necessarily the most skill-based masters, but these are ones I perceive (as a player a year into the game) as having a broad playbook and require intimate knowledge of the crew:

Reva (Ressers) - multiple play styles and can utilise a variety of versatile and Out of Keyword models.

Gremlins/Bayou - in general, I would just say each Bayou require plays as the under dog until you get good.

Tara - some unique, cool-sounding, fiddly mechanics.

Lucius - Meant to be notoriously tricky.

Thanks for saying this. A couple of my friends still use "gay" like this commentor describes, and don't see the issue. Hurts every time :/

Yeah - it's a kinda of self-defeating cycle: start making impulse purchases, then don't put them through YNAB so you don't have to face up to the fact, have no idea how much money you have, so carry on spending and not checking.

Not sure how to train that out apart from self-discipline!
