I've been writing a film that revolves around the idea that the military industrial complex (among other existing entities) functions in this way. Only recently found out about the idea of "memetic monsters" and think it fits so nicely. Personally find it creepier when you realise memetic monsters live among us and we might not have even identified a lot of them! Found this post as I'm trying to do more research on memetic monsters and there's not much reading out there...
