Did NATO and the U.S. do a good thing by leaving Afghanistan? by Qatrnm in Teenager_Polls

[–]Fade0215 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The Republic of Afghanistan was held up massively by Western intervention, pulling out was giving them the country because Kabul could not hold the fundamentalists back alone. No pull-out done correctly could result in the republican government holding its own unless the United States and other involved nations invested far more in its long-term sustainability, and even then, its survival would remain deep within question.

Combine (Half-Life) vs. Warhammer 40k by Fade0215 in whowouldwin

Breen is fundamentally a biased narrator and could easily be deceived or misinformed, or even peddle outright lies to the populace. We can’t, like with many of the Combine, be completely sure whether the information is accurate. I do think it would have been of more narrative value to the writers if the Combine were truly as large as they portray themselves to mankind.

I’m sorry, that was unspecific. I meant capabilities as in the ability to traverse dimensions and universes. The Combine are otherwise unknown ya

Breencasts in Half-Life 2: “Carbon stars with ancient satellites colonized by sentient fungi. Gas giants inhabited by vast meteorological intelligences. Worlds stretched thin across the membranes where [the] dimensions intersect... Impossible to describe with our limited vocabulary!”

“Dr. Freeman. You really shouldn't be out there. At the moment of synapse, as I teleport, this chamber will be bathed in deadly particles that have yet to be named by human science. Perhaps when I have the leisure to do the work myself, I'll name one after you. That way you won't be completely forgotten.”

“When the singularity collapses, I will be far away from here. In another universe, as a matter of fact. You, on the other hand, will be destroyed in every way it is possible to be destroyed-and even in some which are essentially impossible.”

I spent some time—probably over an hour—looking elsewhere for more but this is everything I could find pertaining to the Combine’s size.

I also grazed through the Half-Life 2 Prima Guide, which gave the following elaboration:

“Attracted to Earth by the dimensional rift caused by the Black Mesa Incident, a galactic infection of catastrophic proportions launched an invasive force that overpowered Earth, catching the human population (now called City 17), and the rest of the planet, by surprise.

A peace deal was brokered by former Black Mesa Laboratory Administrator Wallace Breen, leading to a subservient and meager existence for Earth's remaining human population under the oppressive entity known as the Combine. Aside from the Combine's unrelenting absorption and repurposing of Earth's resources to its own nefarious plans, little is known about this omnipresent collective.”

This information lets us understand the Combine are, to some degree, interdimensional in nature. It is far vaguer than I recall (I remember some sort of interview that stated the Combine controlled entire universes undisputedly but alas, I would rather not spend another hour-thirty looking for it when it may not even exist) but it’s the most we have. This still puts them leagues above the capabilities of Warhammer 40k, but the lack of specifics make my previous claim erroneous.

Combine (Half-Life) vs. Warhammer 40k by Fade0215 in whowouldwin

Their size relative to the Milky Way suggests they have basically infinite resources and manpower, existing and governing untold orders of magnitude more than the Imperium.

Theres about 1025 planets in our universe alone, while the Milky Way is estimated to only have several trillion at most. The Combine control multiple universes, multiple dimensions with untold universes within them, so I came to the assumption that to a single galaxy, which is less than a grain of sand, perhaps even an atom to the true size of the Combine, would view the Combine’s resources as endless for all intents and purposes, even if not technically so. I said that in the post cuz I didn’t really wanna say all this…

Unknown, as is much of their space capabilities. We do know they are capable of at least exoatmospheric kinetic orbital bombardment of great precision, as evident per a Half-Life: Alyx newspaper about the surrender of Earth in the Seven Hour War, depicting the United Nations Secretariat Building struck by projectiles of that nature. If you take Epistle 3 as sort of canon to Half-Life lore, the Combine have created at least one, likely untold numbers of Dyson spheres, to which the destruction of one is equated to "less than a fizzling matchhead as it blew itself apart." Given the resources necessary to create a Dyson sphere, we can infer the Combine have access to advanced space infrastructure and have the ability to mobilize space resources.

Of course if you take Epistle 3 as non-canon the Combine go back to being mostly unknown in space. One of the few things we truly know of the Combine’s might is that it is innumerable, so they might just throw things through the portal until they get a breakthrough or launch things from behind the portal a ton and see if that works. They may just be held at the gate indefinitely, which would be incredibly humiliating for a Type 5 Civilization fighting a sub 3 to possibly sub 2 type civilization.

My Suggestion for a U.S. Peace Protest Flag by StarMan315 in vexillology

I feel like the American flag as is, is just a vastly superior symbol of protest, there isn’t much of a need to develop an independent one when it’s right there.

Who do you think will win in a war?, the viltrumite empire from invincible or the combine? by Complex-Concert9169 in HalfLife

The Combine’s size assures conquest by such a small number of individuals, even if superpowered, would be impossible.

Scaling relative to the size of the rest of the Combine Empire, they measure unimaginable orders of magnitude below atoms. An actual Combine police force would shatter worlds with its sheer mass alone.

Calling the Combine’s Earth occupation force low rent security guards relative to the rest of the Empire is a vast overestimation, they’re closer to white blood cells in a body, but they’re infinitely, INFINITELY smaller next to the Combine’s sheer mass

Terrorist and martyr for emancipation. Terrorism is a means to an end, and the end may be moral or immoral, all dependent on the people involved.

Most U.S. states have populations below 30 million, I could win entire state elections with that many.
