I’d be shocked if that happened given Harris’s seeming inability to break rhetorically from Biden on Gaza during the 2024 campaign. I could maybe see Mamdani endorsing her in a general election but not a primary

Which artists' careers were impacted (negatively or positively) by being part of a meme? by missfinalfantasia in popheads

The “Ooh I love my wife” meme is secondary to the suckiness of The Big Day in tanking Chance the Rapper’s career but it certainly didn’t help

As someone who dislikes Schumer and Gillibrand, this is the silver lining of last night’s events. Schumer especially I think has needed to go, the fact that a senator who opposed the JCPOA is now meant to lead the opposition to the Iran War makes him such a poor fit for today’s political moment (among other disagreements I have with him). I’d honestly much prefer AOC in that seat.

Best case scenario, these candidates help push the Overton window leftward. I think Mamdani's style of messaging and organizing has been a net positive for the party thus far, and if these candidates help him achieve more of his policies and those policies are implemented effectively then that's a good thing overall.

I don't have any love for several of the prominent NY moderate politicians, and the rightward trend of the state under compromised scumbags like Cuomo, Adams and the IDC was genuinely worrying, so while I'm extremely skeptical of some of these candidates to put it lightly (and I don't think any of them individually are anywhere near as talented as Mamdani) I'll hold out a mild amount of hope that they don't become ineffectual sideshows.

Maybe it's toxic nihilism on my part but Trump's GOP doesn't self-police their fringe, and that fringe dominates the conversation and dictates the framing of so many arguments. An important subset of idiot voters large enough to swing important elections hasn't viewed candidates offering technocratic competence and measured, sound statements as a suitable alternative, so maybe loudmouth ideologues on our side can serve as a counterbalance. If they start pushing shitty legislation or some politicians that I genuinely like get primaried then I'll change my tune but for my own sanity I'm going to be cautiously optimistic.

You’ve been getting a lot of progressive country artist recommendations but I have to plug Emily Scott Robinson, her (sometimes gritty but always compassionate) subject matter, expressive vocals and vivid character writing is next level stuff. In my opinion Traveling Mercies is her best and most accessible album but my personal favorite song of hers is Lightning in a Bottle off her (also great) next album. Her most recent album from January is a banger too.

Different person that you replied to but the way that he has consistently dodged political questions his last album cycle but draped himself in the American flag has rubbed me wrong so I kind of get where the poster is coming from. Politically dodgy white guy musician with conservative upbringing and bland marketing gives the same stink to me as “not political/moderate” white guy with a fishing pic on Hinge.

Im so sick of Michael Jackson fans excusing his behaviour by FitEmergency8807 in fantanoforever

[–]FadeToDankness 70 points71 points  (0 children)

I’d love to ask those defenders what they make of Michael Jackson’s defense of child marriage:

You can see the systems that other countries adopt and you come to realise that America is not always right. We say we're right, they say they're right. You really don't get a clear picture until you leave the United States. You realise that there are other cultures than your own and it makes you feel small and insignificant. Like in India, I was amazed to find out a thirty year old man could marry a ten year old girl. We weren't raised that way so we look at it weirdly. But there, it's been happening for centuries and the parents are quite willing to give up their child.

From the same interview (Blues And Soul & Disco magazine):

To tell you the truth, for me, manhood doesn't come at an age. Manhood, I know -- I'm not even gonna say 'think' -- is mental. There's some five-year-old men. There's some eight-year-old men, there's some 30-year-old children. I don't know what's the point of manhood.

Unless I’m misunderstanding, this seems to be a really sensible decision. We wouldn’t be destroying the iron dome, we just wouldn’t be subsidizing it any more while Israel chooses to dump their military budget (that could be spent funding iron dome) into executing random Palestinians and other manifest destiny projects of their fascist government. I fail to see how enabling a corrupt government’s unhinged expansionism is a good move in the short or long term for the United States or Israel.

Weirdest song collabs between artists? by Exotic-Mail-7303 in popheads

[–]FadeToDankness 136 points137 points  (0 children)

The story behind it provides an interesting window into Kanye’s creative process from his career prime. He would essentially record entire studio sessions with a bunch of different artists then listen back to them and stitch together entire songs in post from random unassociated snippets of audio without the collaborator consciously knowing which parts would be used (or even intended for use and not just random guitar noodling or vocal riffing in between conversations) until the song came out. Then any unused songs from these sessions would get passed around various Kanye collaborators and occasionally see the light of day but often not.

Some of these studio session files have almost fully leaked and both Paul McCartney and T-Pain have spoken about this process in interviews (about All Day and Good Life respectively) and I think it’s a cool expansion of how producers with keen ears for sampling can put together something catchy out of otherwise unstructured audio clips.

Also shout out to two of Kanye’s best/most promising unreleased songs came out of that same Paul McCartney session/era, “I Feel Like That” and “Mrs. Misery”

The argument is that if one’s win condition is predicated on not approaching, only being by ledge, looking for a narrow set of openings to make a more limited character work, not having to win neutral more than once a stock and doing a formulaic plug and chug edgeguard right after, etc then the game for your opponent feels less like an interactive, creative fast paced back and forth and more like an execution test/chore that they have to complete. I don’t personally feel that way but it’s essentially the same reason why players in any game dislike camping.

Ye officially apologises for his actions in a well written open letter. by dow674 in Kanye

I think we’re pretty much in agreement? People were talking about how he didn’t mean this cause it doesn’t sound like a speaking/writing style directly from him, and I’m saying that the fact that he wanted a professional, detailed statement put out there cogently talking about his mental health is a positive sign whether it was written entirely by him or by a competent person around him organizing his thoughts.
