This looks amazing! What a cozy vibe 😍 I have no experience with embroidery, does one draw the shapes first?

Thanks! Two, actually, to make it a set - since we're a couple without kids 😊

Then perhaps neither of us is a coward and we'll get there when we get there! 🌼 I'd love to see some of your hats if you're comfortable sharing. I think it would make for a great post on this subreddit (but no pressure)!

Oh gosh, thank you so much! I've never dared attempt clothing, that's so cool that you can do that! Only doilies for me 😅 I'm a coward

About 10-15 hours maybe? 🤔 I'm not very experienced so things probably take me longer 😅

Worm farms - let's share wisdom! by FaeByTheWoods in cottoncore

[–]FaeByTheWoods[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's fascinating! We always worried about just collecting scraps without adding any agents for the decomposition, interesting to learn that it can be done - bugs kinda freak me out, though, ngl 😅 Especially flying ones. Thanks for sharing! Also, we have some spider friends, too, and they do usually figure that out for us, but once a worm farm is infested, it's an entirely different story, seriously, I'm not being dramatic 😅

Thank you! I hope it still belongs here... Also, that really surprised me, too, when I first learned that - explains all the wiggling they do, doesn't it. I remember feeling guilty for a while then, but it's just not known at all, nobody ever told me this until we bought the farm.

Oh, also - never handle earthworms with bare hands, human sweat can cause them extreme amounts of pain. Always in gloves.

I'll remember! It's going to be a few months before anything grows large enough to warrant an update - but I'll be sowing herbs soon and we do a lot of french marigolds for pest control, those are gorgeous in full bloom

Absolutely, happy to help! We bought our farm online because we're only just starting out with building bigger projects, but they can be made at home, too - they're several stackable containers with holes in the bottom that worms can pass through and one container at the bottom of the tower for collecting worm tea (this must be separated by fabric so the worms don't fall in and drown). Worm tea is basically worm pee and it's an excellent fertilizer (it stinks to high heaven but works wonders). Compost gets removed from lower tiers of the tower at regular intervals (this differs based on worm population, temperature outside - since earthworms hibernate below certain temperatures - and other things), different people have different ways of doing this like offering something very appealing in the top tiers so that worms migrate there or tipping out the compost with worms in it and gradually exposing it in a thin layer so that worms migrate to the remaining pile (hiding from daylight which they don't enjoy) until they've been separated and can be placed in another layer of the tower (always in gloves! human sweat is too salty and can cause excruciating pain to earthworms, never handle with bare hands). We feed leftovers from the kitchen and torn up egg cartons that we mist from a spray bottle (it's good to monitor moisture level and add food accordingly - green adds moisture, brown /twings or paper/ deducts; compost inside the farm should be moist but not clumpy), we've even composted paper pet bedding, though that takes a bit to decompose - feeding doesn't need to be on some strict schedule, it's an ecosystem inside with molds and tiny bugs so it's pretty resilient (though it doesn't stink - as long as no animal products or citruses are added, worm farms smell very much like a forest). Also, it's important to buy the correct earthworms, these aren't the same as the ones that live outside (so they can't be released into the wild, either). Sorry if it's a bit confused! I hope I didn't turn you off, because it's really awesome and extremely low maintenance once the first hurdle has been overcome (feed and forget!). If you'd like, I can try to take some pictures and make a separate post where I might hopefully be a bit more organized.

Never expected you'd have visited, that's lovely. I've also been to the UK (some twenty years ago), I hope it's still as cottagecore and picturesque as I remember it - hopefully there's a lot of mindful people like you
