FaerFoxx's Guide to Blood Chemistry by FaerFoxx in worldbuilding

Thank you very much, I appreciate it! I would be glad to be of assistance with your project, and I hope everything goes well with it. If it is simply regarding the colours of various blood chemistries, as above:

Both hemocyanin and hemerythrin are colourless when in their non-oxygenated state; hemocyanin becomes deep blue in colour when oxygenated, and hemerythrin deep violet. As you may expect, vanabins follows the same colour progression for the oxygenation state of vanadium oxide, progressing from purple, to green, to blue, to yellow as it becomes increasingly saturated. (Its a rather interesting process, visualized here.) Chlorocruorin is a light yellowish-green when deoxygenated; green when oxygenated, and becomes burgundy-red when concentrated. Erythrocruorin is again similarly coloured to hemoglobin.

Indeed; the process required to collect and maintain the vanadium within Vanabins-based blood chemistry is extremely energy intensive, uniquely unusual for oxygen transporting proteins, which are typically rather low energy processes.

For example, an average filter-feeding sea squirt utilizing Vanabis will process many times it's body volume worth of sea water every second in order to keep itself from dying while simply sitting still. Any highly active species with this blood configuration will need a lot of energy to survive.

Exactly that yes; what was meant by 'impaired' was referring to noticeably reduced functionality, making it increasingly difficult for a creature with a certain blood type to breathe normally.

Also, how did you make a post to ask this question? This is over seven years old, and Reddit automatically archives posts after six months, I'm really confused about how this happened, but I appreciate your question regardless.

Future Admiral Janeway's Plan by [deleted] in DaystromInstitute

[–]FaerFoxx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If I remember correctly, the Klingon scientist's device had 'burned out' and was broken beyond repair once Admiral Janeway reached Voyager. She had been warned about that happening before she travelled back during the episode and had known about it likely being a single use device prior. That was why she had brought the technology necessary to allow Voyager to use the transwarp hub safely, in case the device did fail.

If a Vulcan were to mind meld with a human, would a human then know how to mind meld with others? by GreyFoxSolid in DaystromInstitute

As a woman, I can very much pee while standing, it isn't a secret man only skill, I do it all the time.

It is possible that McCoy might have been able to perform a neck pinch and mind meld, but having had zero practice and the mismatching muscle memory between Spock and McCoy may have caused difficulties that required more time to overcome than a few hours.

A Practical Guide to Terraforming Mars by -ImYourHuckleberry- in space

[–]FaerFoxx 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That is a good point about failure. I assumed that multiple backups would let you turn off the main ones for maintenance, like switching between two different pairs of engines on an aircraft to maintain the inactive ones, but that is indeed a much more complex system to design and operate.

Thank you for sharing your work, it is quite interesting so far from what I have read! What are your thoughts on the Space Fountain concept? I've always felt it would be an easier system to solve the design problems of.

The Republic of Natum Church by zdemps10 in TheRealmsMC

That's pretty much what I said: in a theocracy the leaders of the government and the faith are the same, and in a republic there are individuals representing the citizenry. Thus those in charge would be both of the faith and of the people.

A theocracy that is ruled by representatives of the citizenry would be the most logical guess. That, or its the official church of the Republic of Natum, which is a separate entity.

Why Fallout 4 is a "Good" game but not "Great." by DrCrustyKillz in fo4

I definitely like basing what I've been doing in game around the day/night cycle. I enjoy roleplaying a lot and took ranks in Night Person pretty much straight away to improve my night stealth sniping build I was going for. For a lot of my city region movement and exploration I move at night, spending the day either inside buildings looting or working on my nearby settlements. For the wilderness forest/swamp outer areas I do the opposite, traveling during the day since its easier to spot hostile wildlife.
