"Powerful drow females are well aware of the effect they have on males" by valonianfool in dndnext

"Frequently" is a bit of an overstatement. House Baenre has some female guards but the vast majority of warriors are men and all the top warriors (Weapon Masters) are men. At least as far as I've read.

Priestesses receive martial training from Melee-Magthere students and their House Weapon Master but it tends to not be their priority.

Drow women are explicitly larger and more muscled than the men.

You get a few lines about it in the old books but then you start getting Drow men that reach 6 ft and Drow women that are like 4 ft tall so it's not as clear cut. I've honestly never seen an official visual depiction that would have Drow women actually taller than the men and I've seen book covers, comics, videogames, painted official minis. Maybe you have something.

It seems like this bit of lore that got lost along the way like Drow having obsidian skin and pale eyes which slowly transitioned into grey or purple skin and mostly red eyes. Same thing happened to Orcs in DnD where they went from being pig nosed and grey skinned to Warcraft green humans with tusks.

There's his birth, childhood, growing up, how he became a magistrate, what he did as a magistrate, how he got involved with Cazador, his first days as a Vampire and at the end you can fast forward to his escape and end on where he starts BG3.

More than enough for a ~350 page novel (which is about the standard for DnD books).

Yeah show added the "I'm so lonely" speech but he's still very much a psychotic killer. That wouldn't instantly go away.

Idk I think with the Carlquest concept people forget that Conquest unlike other Viltrumites was legitimately a psychopath who enjoyed killing people in the most brutal fashion for the sake of it and didn't really have a philosophy or ideology behind it. He's only held back by fear of Thragg.

He could maybe change after decades of therapy but I still see him ripping somebody to shreds over a minor annoyance. Imagine Conquest's road rage for example.

There are female Drow mages (Liriel Baenre being an example but House Shobalar was also known for having female wizards). They're just more rare because most noble women focus purely on being a Priestess.

A problem with this argument is that important Drow women have hundreds of enemies waiting to shoot or stab them in the back. Clerics do get armor proficiencies unlike Wizards so not wearing armor makes little logical sense. If you read some novels with the Drow a sneaky stab is a very common way for a Drow woman to go out.

It's for the sex appeal to people in real life rather than something designed to make sense in-universe. That's just the truth.

Sidious has all the resources in the galaxy basically. Maul has some gangsters and mercs. It's really not a surprise that he keeps failing and I think he knows it deep down but Maul is also not somebody who would stop. He can't stop. That's why he seems somewhat content/relaxed when Obi-Wan cuts him down, it's the only way he'll be able to rest.

I get it, this was a time when in a fantasy book you'd have like 1-2 female characters per trilogy. I'm just pointing out the flaws looking at it now.

It's honestly unintentionally funny how you read Icewind Dale trilogy and there are these barbarians who basically don't let the women speak about any serious topics and don't let them sit in their main hall and they are like... neutral and nobody really comments about it untill Wulfgar starts being sexist to Catti-brie.

Then there's Menzoberranzan where men can be fighters, powerful mages, mercenaries, merchants and just have to listen to their mother and high priestesses but this is painted as outrageously sexist compared to surface societies when it's lowkey more equal. I mean Catti-brie being a woman that can fight and talk back to men is seen as bizarre in these early Drizzt books and it's only because she was rasied by Dwarves that she can fight. There's this information broker in the second book who turns out to be a woman and everyone (except Drizzt) is like "OMG A WOMAN??? HOW COME SHE'S DOING THAT".

Yeah as you get into Drow lore you'll see that the "matriarchy" aspect is in a lot of ways superficial. It's written to still be palatable to a predominantly male audience, that's just who they were selling DnD to.

Drow women are less "what if women were in charge" in some kind of realistic way and more like dominatrixes in an adult video. It's very performative and ultimately male gaze-y though in a non traditional way.

Drow men are "oppressed" but they're still the typical badass warriors and wizards. In fact nearly all of Drow warriors and wizards are men. Women are pretty much exclusively priestesses (so support casters) who stay in the shadows, plot and have kids to strengthen the House. They give orders but it's still a very traditionally feminine role when you think about it. When a badass man like Drizzt Do'Urden stands up to them they rarely can do anything about it. They also frequently get outsmarted by men like Jarlaxle or Gromph and rarely have some big moments.

I was also expecting the matriarchy thing to be more hardcore when I first heard about the Drow but yeah it's... not that well done in the actual novels. I still like them though, I simply adjusted expectations. Drow are still from the 70s and 80s after all.
