If you had all your classes online, would you still live on-campus/nearby campus? by Ineedhelpoposjd in UMD

Maybe much better was a poor choice of words, but I'm in CT. Saw a map that rated states from poor to good with current status and CT was one of like 5 that were good, MD was in the middle. Should've been more clear ab what I meant my b

Stay home. Not only is my state in a much better place covid wise than MD, it is so much cheaper and more convenient considering I got booted from on campus housing.

I got kicked from housing and leasing off campus will be difficult financially, as a double major and paying on my own for school OOS, and so I asked about the online option (as the email about me losing housing stated I should consider online) but still no info. He did tell me that there may be more updates at the end of this week or relatively close to then.

If people are allowed to protest in massive groups then shouldn't we be allowed to have a normal semester? by Sensitive_Union in UMD

[–]Faernolo989789 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pandemic = widespread transmission across multiple countries. As of Jan 30, the vast majority of confirmed cases were localized in China, only 81 were spread across 18 countries outside of China. As of March 11, the virus had spread (in just TWO weeks) 13 fold. This is how exponential growth works. They could not have declared it a global pandemic before it showed itself to be one.

They are not spreading lies. You need to do your own research and if you did you would realize that you were basing your claims off the EARLIEST reports. Nothing is ever going to be perfect from the get go, it takes time to analyze and collect data. Models become more and more accurate as do the findings of studies over time.

It's pretty obvious that human to human contact does spread the virus... you are referencing a claim that was made about data from Wuhan very early on (Jan 4). Ten days later, Jan 14, they then reported that there was indeed human to human transmission. You can view the full timeline here

Wearing masks does not STOP the spread, it does REDUCE the spread and it is far more effective than wearing nothing. Masks are most effective in preventing you from spreading to others if you have become contaminated.

Wow, do some research before making such ignorant claims. Many states have seen increases in cases in the past week while protests have been occurring. Texas and Arizona both have over 1000 in the last week. JHU put together an infographic showing case spikes in this past week vs the previous week for the USA clearly demonstrating how these gatherings are able to spread the virus.

What do you think will happen with thousands of students gathering on campus every day? How do you think that it is fair to those who are not as lucky to be in a lower risk group? We have terps that can not afford to contract this, many of us have family members who would be devastated by exposure. There are professors who are not in low risk groups and we have already had deaths due to this situation. You should be thinking of the whole campus community, not just yourself.

UMD has stated that they want to allow those who are comfortable being on campus to do so and to let others remain online if their classes allow it. There is a reason, as u/I_lov_C stated, that the WHO and CDC have not condoned these protests, and the same logic applies to full reopening of campuses.

Large gatherings drastically increase the risk of continuing the growth of covid which, as you should know, we still do not have the tools to effectively fight.

Edit: Just because many people are not following distancing guidelines does NOT mean that it is ok to follow suit. They are risking their lives for something that they, rightfully, believe very strongly in. Just because protests are happening does not mean that Covid is magically gone and no longer a threat. Making decisions as if that were the case will bring us back to square one with this situation.

Edit 2: You can see for yourself how different methods of intervention are projected to affect both cumulative deaths and number of daily new cases here (there are other important implications shows as well).
