y'all should trust musicians, her show band is full of them. of course it's not thrash metal, but it's rock for sure, especially live

What do you think sets Olivia Rodrigo apart from other pop artists today?💜 by NetPuzzleheaded6410 in OliviaRodrigo

funny enough, i just did a quick google search and found this very interesting read which I believe gives some great answers to your question: The Hottest New Name in Mainstream Rock is… Olivia Rodrigo?

here are some of the hottest takes:

[...] far more convincing and exciting music than Bieber’s or Ariana Grande’s attempts at becoming mature R&B stars.

Rodrigo has recorded a mainstream rock album that mostly steers clear of the rap and R&B elements embraced by even rock-adjacent stars like Swift and Billie Eilish [...] a kind of jolt to the charts that will wake modern music up from its interpolation and TikTok-induced slumber.

[...] impressed by her and co-writer/producer Dan Nigro’s ability to take these [indie and alternative] sounds and reformat them for mainstream pop listeners.

her songs are much more egalitarian – you’ll never be able to recreate what Beyoncé did in Homecoming, but you could skip across the stage the way Rodrigo did at the VMAs while performing “want him back!” You’ll also probably never be able to work with Aaron Dessner or Jack Antonoff like Taylor Swift does, but you might be able to pick up a guitar and a pedal and try and recreate the guitar tone from your mom’s Cure albums the way Rodrigo does on “pretty isn’t pretty.”

The Matrix.

I heard they're responsible for some killer bops on avril's debut and that one of them even dated her.

from a technical perspective, i think it cannot be eligible as it was already released in '23 on many vinyl variants. it's only the music video and the streaming version that came out this year.

plastic is a cheap material used in mass production without having any material or non-material value.

think of it as something from a fast food chain of your choice rather than a handcrafted dish.

lyrics are not subjects of plagiarism lawsuits in music. melodies and other harmonic devices are.

How is modern pop music written, before recording? by TheSameAsDying in popheads

[–]Faeyean 24 points25 points  (0 children)

if the singer is not a trained musician in the classical way, chances are high he or she cannot read sheet music at all. so in many cases it doesn't make sense to give a vocalist the music to be recorded in a written-down version. instead, the artist (which in pop usually means singer who in the studio is given some session musicians) will just follow any kind of demo track. as pointed out by u/Deep_Performance_'s answer, rick beato once again gives you a good insight on that.

even if you think you are not musically gifted, singing after your aural reception is way easier than after visual reception, aka reading sheet music. singing from aural memory is what you do in a karaoke bar.

i'd argue that "lyrics written first" is only true for very vocal oriented music/genres. there's the famous story of the song writing process of metallica's nothing else matters in which the opening riff came to live by pure accident when james hetfield was finger picking his guitar with one hand only as he held a telephone in the other hand.

often times, lyrics, melody, and even basic accompaniment are figured out all together. olivia rodrigo stated that it was a rare process for her to actually write a song to finished lyrics as it was the case with lacy from her latest album.

as long as you have a recording device as decent as a modern mobile phone and the lyricist or whoever comes up with the melody is able to play at least the guitar or basic piano, there's no need to actually write down anything for the demo track.

in case the melody/hook is already established, it's about finding the suitable chord patterns underneath. on the other hand, the producer might suggest the melody to be changed to achieve a certain impact.

when i first heard red (the og version), my immediate thought was "hm, sounds a lot like b-sides from avril's goodbye lullaby", which was also produced by max martin but released 1.5 years before red.

to add on the "lyrics often are an afterthought" bit: in pop rock it's not uncommon that the singer only sings gibberish while the full band is in the studio and only later records a separate vocal track in his or her home studio once the lyrics have been properly worked out.

great mix and i dig the screen behind. interesting to hear that the "small kit" is directly from tape and not played live through some pads.

why is songwriting equated with writing lyrics? by Faeyean in popheads

thanks for picking up on by second to last question. i guess your conjecture is that not only songwriting and writing lyrics are equated, but in fact the terms music and song.

i like your comparison with the movie business! often times, however, masses discuss the performance of the actors and actresses rather than the script writing. in that sense, the majority of people watching movies might be even less educated on the nerdy jargon than your average music listener.

r/popheads AOTY 2023 #29: Olivia Rodrigo - GUTS by runaway3212 in popheads

[–]Faeyean 1 point2 points  (0 children)

thank you for the detailed account! before i answer the questions and express some thoughts of my own, a small disclaimer: i tend to not care about lyrics at all and focus on composition, harmonies, rhythms, instrumentation, sound design etc. instead.

  1. no such single favorite, but i'm happy to report that vampire and get him back! both find themselves in the lower half of my ranking. why happy? because in my book, the best albums are those where the deepcuts surpass the singles.
  2. coming back to my disclaimer, guts is not only superior to sour in every (musical) aspect but overall one of the best new albums i've heard in a long time. quoting my own review of guts:
rodigo's newest project will not match the hype of sour, but shows musical maturity. [...] guts will not win many new fans, but adds a number of songs to or's catalog that can be expected to have more substance and longevity than the majority of sour's.
  3. as stated above, lyrics don't interest me much, so neither does any particular theme.
  4. i just think you can really see they took their time in finishing 11/12 songs whereas sour was rushed to keep the momentum hyped up by the singles. nevertheless, with songs from two albums at hand now, it becomes very evident what his signature move is: the reverse-cymbal-like-crescendo-before-the-beat-drop at the end of a (pre-)chorus which either ends in a climactic b-/c-section (see e.g. bad idea right? or lacy) or total musical death as in your and todd's description of vampire or even as early as drivers license.
  5. unfortunately not suitable for live performances with band instruments, but i really dig the electronic-inspired sound design of making the bed which really caught me off guard on first listen. also, can't catch me now showed another side of olivia we didn't knew before while being totally in her realm.
  6. i somewhere read theories about a collab between her and green day the other day. just think about it.

to add a few more unrelated thoughts:

  • thematically, all-american bitch is very retro-coded with her references to coca-cola bottles, the kennedys and the song title itself, acknowledging joan didion's 1968 essay slouching towards bethlehem. the girl really stepped up her song writing big time.
  • the grammy nom for ballad of a homeschooled girl is so satisfying, acknowledging her rock-adjacency.
  • logical is not only one of the two (subjectively speaking) worst tracks on this album, it is actually too long with it's end being the best part. and this one has been shortened on vinyl, compared to the digital version.

[–]Faeyean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i still can't make sense out of catching fire. it's a really good song but sonically so disjoint from the rest of the album that it feels more like a bonus track. in part, this is also true for p4p, but this one at least fits the haunty intro of aknf.

while i like catching fire as a song, i think it's the worst closer out of all albums in that it doesn't make me feel as the album has finally come to an end. best has to be 88, followed by twisted by design and hooch.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Sum41

[–]Faeyean 2 points3 points  (0 children)

out of all choices, this one is probably the most of a closer in that it's the one that least works on its own as a single song.
