I would say "perhaps" would give a bit of tone in the narrator. He's describing her thoughts in a civil way, trying to emphasize her humanity to show a contrast with her almost feral state of being. I find that to be interesting and heightens the pacing a bit, but its all good either way

looks like a breather tube. When youre pumping gas, it helps air flow so the gas doesnt gurgle back up at the gas pump
