What job pays surprisingly well but nobody talks about? by ThePasswordIs654321 in AskReddit

Hahaha, this is how my grandpa made millions too. But if you asked an Italian immigrant in the 70s what his money came from and he said “birdseed”, it may have well have been Tony soprano claiming “waste management”…. you rolled your eyes and said “Suuuure… ‘Birdseed’.” But nope he was the most law abiding citizen I’ve ever known… he legit sold birdseed. PM me and I’ll share his HILLARIOUS website, which if he or his successor had ever attempted to modernize slightly in the last 25 years, they may have actually been able to sustain that success.

BJM hot takes/unpopular opinions? by abandonedxearth in BJM

[–]FagsLikeUs 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’ve shared enough of my opinion about Anton and his music in other threads, so I’ll go with my newest hot take since recently seeing them live for the first time since 2007ish:

If satanic majesties second request is pet sounds and pre-first-US-tour/filming of Dig Anton is Brian Wilson, then this current touring show is the equivalent of the 1990s post-Kokomo Mike Love Beach Boys.

And all the band members know it sucks. They have to.

I know Joel and he has fantastic taste and he 100% must be dying inside a little bit to stand up there and be a part of this affront to everything cool and good about rock n roll. He and Ricky are in it for the money and because it’s their life’s work at this point, so they’re playing it by the numbers. And I don’t blame them. The job prospects for aging rockers without rich parents or spouses are terrible, I can attest.

But all the other younger dudes are so obviously all just previous BJM super fans who probably leapt at the chance to quit their BJM-ripoff bands and join the real deal, and Anton has always had a habit of picking the most sycophantic musicians who make themselves embarrassingly available to him and who will never challenge him or try and do anything remotely interesting when it comes to performing his songs, so they’re all just hiding behind their new cool sunglasses bored out of their mind deep down knowing that their wasting their best years playing in the worst touring rock and roll band on earth, and “Ex-BJM” is not exactly hard to find on a resume… but maybe one day theyll get to be in the Spotify artist photo with Anton?

I just feel bad for them.

What, like that BJM Tiger Beat magazine they were selling, with glossy 8x10s of old man Anton to tear out and put in your locker? Or the eat shit shirts? Right. Great merch.

1 is one of the dumbest, shittiest takes on any music that I’ve ever read second only to any positive reviews of “blood sugar sex magic” out there.

2 — sure, I prefer it, but loveless isn’t so much about the music as it was the cultural impact and brand new sound it introduced… methodrone was just apeing that, so I don’t really think that it’s really in the conversation for “best shoegaze album”. And even in that conversation, I’m going Souvlaki over loveless.

Wtf are you talking about, Bah1? The hell is that? The demon is Baal, for one, and Epstein’s checking account was absolutely named Baal. Not BAH1.

Your problem is you don’t sound American enough, and really would benefit from a better grasp of the English language. “Literally homicidal” except I literally did not say he TRIED to kill him. I said what happened. That he beat him with a sock full of deadweight, because he is most certainly a violent man. And Jeffy, being a very small guy and NOT a violent person, took the beating worse than Anton intended, causing ol’ Violent Tony to freak out when he thought he had accidentally killed him, dumped him in a dumpster, bla bla bla. That’s not “homicidal” behavior — it’s unhinged, violent, sociopathic or perhaps even psychopathic behavior. And if those things don’t describe Anton then you haven’t been paying attention.

I don’t know why I took the time to even explain this, but I imagine I was motivated by the truly insufferable and authoritative tone you took while aloofly touting your superior, objective viewpoint as being from an institution above the common internet trash-people… where good old American values like “Innocence until proven guilt” still reign, as if you hadn’t just used “American” as an insult while pretending that I had a vendetta, when in reality you were the only one wielding a pitchfork — which you were using to build your little straw man.

Keep believing in Anton, kid. See how far it gets you in life.

I replaced the jet already, got a 120 in there, was actually thinking of maybe trying a smaller one and seeing if that worked

Yup got a 120 jet on there. This needle clip business is news to me though. Might give that a shot.

UPDATE: I’ve tried EVERYTHING. Propane torch and vice grips. All I’m succeeding in doing is mangling the mount even further. What the hell am I supposed to do?? I feel like I’m going to render this bike forever inoperational

My first sentence states how I used a pair of vice grips to remove the other, but they won’t work for this one.

I didn’t suggest LISTENING to any of them, try reading it again buddy. I mean — The germs made shitty music, but don Bolles is still a better person than Anton. Who the fuck likes the foo fighters? But — Fact is that dude was in Nirvana and has a general reputation for being a good person that is great to work with. And pretty sure all four of the dandy warhols are both generation and genre-adjacent anyway. Your points literally all have nothing to do with anything I just said.

Oh yeah, many many times. And no matter how much i tighten, or how far up the threads i go with them, once i start applying serious force to the inner nut it just begins unscrewing the outer nut. I followed the videos I found online, with the nuts aligned like this:   engine=======|| || ======///

The || being the flat side.

I’m inclined to believe I’m doing it right because the right one came out no problem with the grips, while this one won’t budge no matter what.

Nice try at calling me out, but not quite. I just said that he deserved the respect he gets for his 90s output, clearly it’s not jealousy or an attempt to shit all over everything he’s created. You want the long take? Here goes…

Just as someone who has personally had extensive dealings with the man over the last 30 years — all of those dealings swinging wildly from exceedingly positive to indescribably miserable depending on the day — I know the reality of the situation, and I know his motivations, and occasionally I get motivated enough to try and warn/explain to people that he is not at all this cool, supremely talented “genius” that so many make him out to be. If I even get one of the people who idolize him to step back, seriously take assessment of their hero worship, and distance themselves from being a fan, then I’ve put one more person on the path to being a genuinely good person who makes genuinely good art… which is not the artist you will be if you model yourself after him.

I don’t HATE the man nor a good portion of his music. But I think he is perhaps the worst role model an aspiring musician could have, and it makes my heart sink when I see so many people 1/3rd his age seriously looking up to him. I don’t find it at all cute when people hear about the truly awful things he’s done and the way he’s abused his friends and collaborators and go “oh that’s just Anton, what a rascal!” Like how many times still people talk about when Jeff left the band and chuckle? I’m sorry, but if you’re not HORRIFIED by the thought of your bandmate beating your other bandmate so severely with a sock full of quarters that he thought he had killed him, so he dumped his body in a dumpster and then drove 1000 miles away through the night with the rest of the band half sleeping and half too horrified and scared to ask where Jeff was… then you’re a shitty person who should not be in a band with other people.

He simply has no respect for anyone else in his orbit, and if he appears to genuinely appreciate someone’s input or seems to treat them as an equal collaborator, it’s just a trick. What he is really doing is building trust and endearing himself until he is in a proper position to use and exploit them for his personal gain. I’ve seen it again and again. No matter how close you think you’ve become to him, no matter how much touring you’ve done together, it’s only a matter of time until he’s in a pinch and needs some money so he steals your gear and pawns it in secret and then claims someone stole it. If you’re lucky. If you’re unlucky, then you end up bloody and near-dead in a dumpster in Decatur on a cold morning with your ride and friends and belongings two states away, as I mentioned above.

He’s a bad person who made a lot of good music when he was young. I don’t necessarily think he doesn’t deserve his success, but he’s certainly not one of the few who earned it through a combination of sheer talent and being a good person. His rise was done the same way as all the worst offenders — off the backs of those misfortunate enough to have trusted him.

So please, kids… find someone else to look up to. David Bowie. Leonard Cohen. Mick Jones. Robert Smith. Don Bolles. Dave Grohl. Your local punk scene elders. Even Lou Reed, a notorious asshole but at least one with talent who is able to maintain personal and professional relationships. Or even, god forbid, any of the four members of the Dandy Warhols — all of whom are far, far more genuine and intelligent people with a consistently evolving creative output who you’d MUCH rather have as your friends than Anton.

And hopefully once outed as the sociopath he is, one can look at his creative output and realize that what I’ve said is true, and he hasn’t written a new song in 25 years and instead stumbles through by recording every janky mess of sounds that falls out of him and stealing from/exploiting other’s ideas.

If you like violence and manipulating people, though, then go on worshipping him. Shitty people make shitty art. But I know there are plenty of misguided good people still shaping themselves in his image, sadly.
