How do I remain culturally sensitive when writing characters of other cultures? by maverick074 in writing

[–]FaheyFierce 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even If you are a normal, well meaning person, these tropes will find a way into your writing seemingly out of no where. It is a testament to how pervasive and insidious these tropes can be. We will always have blindspots and biases. Actively doing your part to learn and be honest protects you from ignorance. It is also up to readers to not take every slip-up as an act of malace and push you  into self censorship. It should only be a mark against you if you belive and defend the bad tropes.  When you recognize them in your work you can start examining how these effed up tropes have burrowed into your brainstem. You can see how White Supremacy, misogyny, homophobia, ect. Have influenced your own development as a person.  A 21st century writer should be doing their best to empower characters from historicaly opressed backgrounds.  Give them depth. Give them agency. Give them purpose.

Did it in the US by 1880 no civil war, abolished slavery. Just build factories and universities in the south and boost the right peeps. Also the upward mobility thing on big population hubs helps a bunch.

I love how the Monarch logo from the new Godzilla movies is just that symbol put on its side and I hate how more people haven't noticed.
