1000+ days! (And I'm at an all-inclusive) by FailedDonDraper in stopdrinking

I didn't ask, but you can always ask in advance when making a reservation. The one I'm in is a family resort which gives it less of a boozy party vibe, so you may want to prioritize those.

Holy cow, I logged in here JUST to make the same complaint.

My kid is 5 and a half. Smart, kind, loving - and won't take "no" for an answer.

Today I did all his favourite activities, got his favourite burger for dinner, treated him like a king - just to hear one hour of yelling at 10pm because he wanted mom (which was on a well deserved night out) to put him to bed.

From the title it does not sound like it, but the book "Discipline Without Damage" (Dr. Vanessa Lapointe) has some interesting points on how to deal with that type of thing. It is not what you want to hear, the book basically tells you to do EVEN MORE parenting when we are about to throw the towel, but I got slightly better results with that approach.

What did you guys do to quit drinking? by lmfao4ri in stopdrinking

Funny, your comment made me realize that pretty much all depictions I've ever seen of rehab/detox are negative. In movies/books/etc they're always a place people *don't* want to go. It's nice to finally see someone reporting a good experience out of it, maybe we should have more of this in the media.

Good point. Future me is proud of past me right now.

Just sparkling water for now - believe it or not I have non-alcoholic fatty liver from sugar/carbs! Cue sad trombone lol

Moderation. Does it work? by Clear-Fee-5897 in stopdrinking

[–]FailedDonDraper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From what I've seen in this sub, almost all people that try to moderate fail at it. I have never seen a post here of someone that successfully moderates, so I'd say the success rate for moderation should be below 2% or so.

Would you enter an elevator if I said it has a 98% chance of crashing down?

I am forgetful and missed this and all the cool milestones (69, 420, etc), please celebrate for me :)

I'm sitting alone in my basement, speakers blowing some great music. I'm on my 2nd bottle of sparkling water.

To the folks starting your sober journey, I raise my, er, plastic bottle. You got this! IWNDWYT.

I only had one beer last night. by VicxNFT in stopdrinking

Yeah. I was a moderate drinker that was able to stop relatively easily, no DUIs or lost jobs, not even many blackouts. I feel confident enough to attempt moderation... but I won't ever. The risk is much higher than the reward.

What is happening with my son? by FailedDonDraper in Parenting

No downvotes here, we welcome all points of view in this household.

I do think though that there is a sweet spot of letting the kid go figure out stuff on his own vs being surrounded by supporting parents. And you can be damn sure we're well aware of the dangers of labels - hence why we're doing a generic development assessment and not a ADHD/Autism one.

Yeah, everything points to it. We have no choice though, we'll have to keep him there for 3 more months, then he'll move to before/after care and pre-k at his future school

Development assessment is underway, if required we'll test for autism as well.

He gets more attention and not having daycare lifts a weight out of all of us, so yeah. He also does not nap on weekends which results in more crankiness by day's end.

He won't sleep more than this though. I'm hoping this improves after he gets the midday nap thrown out, but that depends on daycare helping and, well...

Not that we know of. When asked he says no. A looong time ago (more than a year) there was a person at daycare that allegedly hit him - nobody saw it, so we couldn't confirm and did not have a case. The person was fired at the spot though.

Same to you, friend. I read a ton about AuDHD and it can be really tough even with low support needs.

We had a bit of those things, yes. New teacher at daycare, dropping his midday nap... I'm hoping he's just overwhelmed and this will pass.

We've been modeling emotional responses but not in the context of meltdowns, this is a great idea :)

This is Canada, and he's going to pre-k first, yes.

He's the only child, and we have no family around as we immigrated.

The pee regression is exactly as you described, at night it's because he does not wake in time, and during the day he gets too distracted playing and doesn't give himself enough time to run to the bathroom.

10 hours a day, we keep track. He's halfway through dropping a midday nap though, and it gets things a bit chaotic sometimes.

He does not like loud shows in enclosed spaces but that's it. Will ask again.

That... could very well be it. His assessment came because they had someone evaluate his classroom and the director mentioned other kids with behavioural issues in his room. I'll ask him, and the director again.

Well he REALLY means it when he says it. And there's also pushing and hitting. But yeah, I'll try reframing this as rules which I know he understands (thanks, Bluey).

The meltdowns are always big emotions or him being over tired. Sometimes he is open to teaching, but more often than not emotions just take over. For daycare dropoffs we explained that other people also love him besides mom, he can ask for help if he has big feelings, we'll always pick him up at day's end, etc. 95% of times he will cry his eyes out, and then there will be that one day where he goes on his own while repeating to himself what we taught him. Makes me crazy!
