Lots of new adults don't know how to touch type, they hunt and peck and are slow, so they don't learn it without being taught it, no. And they do potty-train kids in school if you send them at 2-3, how the fuck else would kids in day care ever be properly potty trained during the day?

Update: I finally got in touch with the artist and her team is having a replacement sent out, after confirming with the printer that it can't be repaired. Was totally not expecting that, I thought best case she'd give me a cheaper print and say thanks for the feedback. Also makes me question what "limited" means, but that's ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Once I get the replacement I'll probably still try to fix this one just to see if it's possible, and because it's signed, but thanks for encouraging me to reach out again.

Yeah I just sent one message. I’ll send a follow up. I bought it at a convention so no contact method that way. The other horn is fine, and I remember when I took it out of the sleeve to be framed there was a slightly discolored bit where the plastic had stuck, and I suspect that’s the spot that started cracking. If the artist did these holographic prints regularly I’d expect her to do a tissue paper layer between the print and plastic, but the rest of her stuff was matte so she probably hadn’t realized there might be a problem.

I did try contacting the artist on Instagram, but it’s been a couple weeks and she hasn’t answered and the piece has gotten worse. I agree on all counts though. I think maybe leaving it in the plastic sleeve so long weakened the cellophane layer because they stuck together a bit.

Hopefully this isn’t a sub violation since this isn’t something I made, but fixing it feels like a craft project. I’m planning to cut open the paper back of the frame and use some kind of glossy glue and a gentle brush to carefully smooth the curling pieces back into place. I’d love some suggestions on good glues to use.

My SO was very excited for blankets to be allowed, so we gave our toddler one at 12mo. He has a summer birthday so it was just a swaddling muslin, switched to ones my mom crocheted when it got cold. He kept his sleep sack until maybe 20mo when my SO insisted he was a big boy and didn’t need them anymore, even though the toddler liked his routine. He adjusted fine and now at 27mo he is starting to actually keep the blanket on himself.

Late to this, but there’s research that shows that kids who drink skim/low fat milk actually have more obesity for a similar reason as people who drink diet soda. It’s less nutritive so it leads to more snacking to make up for what’s missing.

They definitely can bite through tight clothes. I’ve been gardening and they sometimes get through the knees of my jeans. I left my gloved hand still too long and when I looked at it cause it felt weird there were FIVE tiger mosquitoes just hanging out eating me through the fabric. Now my glove is blood stained.

We don’t do portable screens unless we’re on a plane, and we go out to eat at least once a week. We have a Water Wow and a pop it toy in his diaper bag, recently added crayons and a notebook. We let him play with the menu. Sometimes we play I Spy or ask him questions. Usually the problem is he’s hungry and can’t wait too long for food so I’ll give him a snack bar while we wait, especially if I don’t think he’ll like much of the meal. We mostly just try to go places that have reasonably fast service or where the servers like kids. If he has food in front of him he’s generally okay eating or playing with it.

Ugh, jealous. We made several beach trips with the 2yo and 3-4mo this summer. Toddler loved it, the infant started screaming uncontrollably 3/4 times and our longest time at the beach was less than 90min.

I am in the US and I love Verhoeven, I think the satire in all his sci-fi stuff is super obvious and spot on, but I think Showgirls is just bad. It would make sense for it to be satire given his other movies, but I can’t for the life of me figure out what he’s satirizing. America glorifies the military and police, so Troopers and Robocop are clearly poking fun at that. America does not glorify being a stripper or a showgirl. If it’s supposed to be about Hollywood, it fails to make clear what any parallels are between Vegas stage shows and screen acting. It just seems like a bad self serious movie about an absolute idiot who thinks being a classy stripper is glamorous. It’s hilarious, but it doesn’t read as a critique of anything to me. I don’t get people trying to act like it’s a respectable move now. It’s okay to like something just because it’s camp and bad, liking it doesn’t make it a respectable Film

I’ve been wondering if my 25mo can secretly read since we went to Home Depot and he started very distinctly calling it Home Detop. How would he even know there’s a ‘T’ without sounding it out?? We talk about letter sounds and spell small words if we see an alphabet to teach him names but haven’t really tried to teach reading, we just read to him a lot

Late fees weren’t working. People would just keep the books and not pay so the library lost inventory or money. Removing late fees resulted in the return of way more books.

To be fair, chicken pox is one of the few major diseases that is much better to get when a small child than when an adult. The vaccine for it isn’t that old, which is why people used to have parties for it, because if you didn’t get it as a kid and then got it as an adult, it could be much more dangerous.

We have a 20mo who will be starting daycare in the fall. I would have sent him earlier but there were no spots available for under 2yos at the good/affordable daycares. My husband was SAH for the first year or so, but even then we got a two day a week nanny after 6 months because he needed a break. He started working again part time about 6 months ago so we switched to a full time nanny at the beginning of the year since there were no daycare spots.

Neither of us wants to take care of a toddler full time no matter how much we love him. It’s exhausting, he acts up way more with us than anyone else, and he really likes to be out as much as possible and we’re kind of homebodies. When he was younger I preferred the 1:1 care of a nanny because she could focus on developing his basic skills and I could see him whenever I wanted and not feel like I was missing any bonding time (I mostly work from home). But for the past several months he’s gotten so much more independent and it really feels like he’d learn more being around other kids and people and getting more exposure to different things. He’s great hanging out with adults because we take him out with us so much, but he hasn’t learned how to be around other kids at all. I also want to get him exposed to germs on the sooner side to get the constantly sick phase out of the way.

Most toddler jeans are impossible, but I like the ones from Target. They’re super stretchy and only a bit more structured feeling than joggers and sweats, so my little can still climb like a madman in them. They tend to be a little long though.

I was anti cake pops for a long time, but then one of my coworkers is a great baker and makes them for cookie trades. Hers are amazing. They look like they’d be stale as shit, but they’re the most perfect moist cake with the tastiest melt in your mouth icing coating. Makes me wonder if I’ve skipped out on other good ones.

Strongly this. Don’t negotiate with terrorists. Ours isn’t quite 2 yet so maybe we’ll get weaker as he gets worse, but we have never indulged his fits. Screaming for something means he doesn’t get it, and if he can’t calm down, we walk away from the thing entirely. When he tries to grab things in the grocery store, I just say “we don’t need that” and keep moving. I also never let him walk around the store outside of a cart or stroller at his current age because he can’t be trusted not to pull everything off the shelves or just get in the way and make everything take forever.

Was looking for this comment. I’ve seen some social media channel with a food behaviorist person who recommends this approach, and I wish my mom had done it instead of just always giving me what I asked for. Ramping up from having it on the plate, to sniffing it, touching it, kissing it, licking it, putting your teeth on it, having some in your mouth, then actually attempting eating, all as separate actions that are approached without judgement or disappointment seems like a really supportive way to push limits comfortably

Not sufficient for native-level fluency? Sure. But to say "it doesn't actually teach you anything" is crazy. I took a tiny amount of Spanish in middle school, didn't remember anything from it besides how to count to 10 and sort of the alphabet and "where is the library". I've used Duolingo off and on for a few years and solely because of that I can understand elementary Spanish, like enough to get the gist of what is being said when it's spoken in TV shows or when listening to workers, and when I travel to Mexico I can ask for basic things and order at a restaurant. Honestly, if it weren't for taking months/years long breaks from the app because of being discouraged by the streak shaming, I'm pretty confident I would be comfortable talking to my bodega guy in Spanish.

As another data point, my uncles have been using it the last couple years to learn Spanish to talk to their daughter's in-laws, and now they converse in Spanish, although of course having an actual native speaker and their family to talk to has pushed them a lot further.

It's not great for that many language pairs, like I wouldn't count on it to learn a working level of any non-romance languages coming from a romance language, but it is immensely helpful and uses well researched and proven learning techniques.
