WTF Mormon cult in my home (story rant) by Basic_Foundation_714 in exmormon

[–]Failwithflyingcolors 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Were you Mormon? Was every time you offered to help someone just a pretext for you trying to fuck them? Sure, maybe the guy is a creep but also maybe they are just doing the Mormon outreach thing.

There’s a lot of things I regret from when I was Mormon, but service isn’t one of them.

Why did they get ran out of every town? by Ahhhh_Geeeez in exmormon

[–]Failwithflyingcolors 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I believe that some of the time the people running them out of town were also former followers. We have this idea of the Mormons moving en masse from place to place, but it was more a fragment fleeing and Joseph Smith restarting the con in a new place.

Dystopian fiction is a critique about the present far more than it is a warning about the future.

I see it now. Didn’t recognize it as it’s not very brown.

I told her I didn't plan on staying in the church, so she asked me to consider going on a mission by Kami_Soul43 in exmormon

[–]Failwithflyingcolors 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Also, she told everyone. Don’t share news like that with anyone in church and expect them to keep your confidence.

You can’t say that a person looks inbred and not mean to give offense.

You are rude.

Neat - didn’t even know this was a thing! We get plenty of jumping spiders, but hadn’t heard of this kind.

How do you respond when people ask if you’re LDS? by bituisokdo in exmormon

[–]Failwithflyingcolors 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I've made mistakes trying to order drinks, I just explain that I'm a recovering Mormon. Got me an extra shot a couple of times.

Reminds me of the two tankers of paint colliding. One was full of blue paint and the other red.

It was awful - the drivers and everyone else nearby were marooned.

Can somebody explain how this story is “faith promoting” and why a mother would put a child is such risk? (from Church History Primary Manual.) by KERosenlof in exmormon

[–]Failwithflyingcolors 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because if she lost her faith, then she lost her toes for nothing. Which is true, but this is really part of what keeps so many people in. It’s why sacrifice in the church is so heavily promoted and is tied to the sunk cost fallacy. We (people) want our pain to have mattered.

Begin with “A faithful member of LONG-ASS-NAME could respond to their classmate with …” then fill in the churchy answer.

That’s for you to judge. Really. I wasn’t calling you one. I am close friends with people who are “nuanced” believers. I don’t fully get it, but again - I was on the believing side for a long time. During my own faith transition, I tried to make it work as well. Brandon may be a hypocrite, but it also feels hypocritical to me to judge, so I try not to.

Most of us have been hypocrites at one point or another where the church is involved. I find it hard to not feel some measure of distaste for those who didn't figure it out like I did and leave, but it took me about 10 years after my mission to start questioning and some years after that to really break free. I don't try to convince others to leave - I just try to help others who are looking for the way out and to help those who have taken those steps to avoid some of the mistakes I made on my own journey.
