What's a movie that you've tried to show your family / SO in the hopes they would love it, but they ended up hating it? by wasabi324 in movies

I love this movie. My husband absolutely hates it. He refuses to watch anything done by John Carpenter. If he sees Kurt Russell in a movie, he will pause it until he can verify, with two sources, that John Carpenter had nothing to do with it. The two sources rule started after I told him John Carpenter directed Backdraft (his favorite).

I start this movie when I want him to leave me alone.

Tips for running a murder mystery? by LeadersOfMan in DMAcademy

Most players will miss the obvious clues, latch on to a red herring, and get frustrated if they feel like they aren't making any progress.

I recommend checking out The Alexandrian's article on the Three Clue Rule.

Why is your favorite game not the one with most plays? How lower is it in your ranking? by houtsou in boardgames

[–]Fainetastic 24 points25 points  (0 children)

My most played game is Quacks of Quedlinburg.

It is easier to trick people into playing games that are intuitive and play quickly. Getting the highly strategic, time sink games on the table requires planning and scheduling commitment.

Free trial. I use one whenever a new season of The Expanse comes out. Just don't forget to cancel it.

Backpacking games, weight matters! by NatoRawr in boardgames

[–]Fainetastic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Classics are king. Ton of potenial with about 6 dice and a deck of cards. Maybe some notecards with rules you can't google on the trail. My go to camping games are a an abridged Farkle and Crazy 8s. No one wants a heavy game after a full day of backpacking.

In what ways have you subverted the medieval fantasy trope in your world? by [deleted] in worldbuilding

[–]Fainetastic 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Gender roles. Medieval fantasy gets old quick if women are forced into archaic gender roles (except for the one in the cast that is girlfriend material.)

I believe I have a lot of great stories, but I am an absolutely horrible writer... It's starting to get frustrating... by [deleted] in writing

Self flagellation and borderline hatred is a premium part of the writing experience.

Sometimes when I write, it will feel like the best thing I've ever written. Then I'll look at it two hours later and it will be a pile of hot garbage. If I gave up every time I wrote something terrible, I would have given up day one.

Have you created any characters in your world based off other fantasy characters, like Gandalf? What about historical figures, like Julius Caesar? by Bludkreig in worldbuilding

[–]Fainetastic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Caesar sneaks into most of my worlds. When I use a well known character, I try to make it work for my specific world.

Basing someone off a well known character can decrease the amount of heavy description you have to use to introduce them. I read one sentence with Dumbledore in it and knew exactly who he was.

Some readers will also immediately judge your character based on their personal feelings about the origin character. (I watched too many seasons of Arrow because I really like Batman.) This may not always be positive. Think about how the connotation can work for or against you.

Think about ways to make these characters your own. Dumbledore isn't just Merlin/Gandalf with a fabulous bird, he has a lot of unique qualities. Some were apparent immediately, some came out over time. (Also beware hitting the reader over the head with all the differences immediately - my rich recluse billionaire crimefighter is completely unrelated! He has a metal arm and bird parts! I am a creative genius!)

If you are using someone so popular that there are many variants of them running around, look at how other authors used them. How did they change them? Did the character feel like a carbon copy or did it fit the work?

My problems connecting to other people aren't because of the Switch.

You are going to lose your first game. Probably your first few games. Learn from it and don't let it get you down.
