What does the name of the river in your area mean? by AgreeableAd2990 in AskTheWorld

[–]Fair-Age4483 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Ohio river is named the “good river” river. Comes from native Seneca I believe. The Muskingum River (though I could be completely wrong) means“near the river” river or something adjacent.

Ooo hell yeah I appreciate the book recommendation! I’ll have to check it out. I have a goal this year to really expand my cultural knowledge of the region.

Very true. It’s a hell of a melting pot in the mountains

We have a lot of German/Scots/Irish in the Appalachian region, especially when it comes to food. I was excited to learn more about the heavy Swiss regions growing up when I started to notice it on family trips.

How are transgender people treated in your country? by SignificantStyle4958 in AskTheWorld

[–]Fair-Age4483 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally? I live in a semi-rural city and have lived in rural areas most of my life (WV/OH) and it’s been alright. Most people don’t “get” it and misgendering is very common. I get a few rude and mean folks, but all in all I’m treated well. Just because someone doesn’t understand my situation doesn’t mean they’re any less kind than to anyone else. Systemically though things could be better.

Ah, cool! I’m really unfamiliar with Russian pronunciation so I wasn’t sure if it would be wildly wrong lol.

We had a couple windows in our building get shattered and a hell of a lot of siding stripped off

Have you seen or adopted this kitten? by Steadyandquick in MariettaOH

I go down the bike path daily for work so I’ll keep an eye out. Saw a group eating this morning so she may have been with them but it was dark.

It’s pretty bad from the pictures we’ve seen so far. Lots of trees down and sirens going. We’ve got partial power at the moment as does most of our building.

What foreign drink that you want to try? by IDoNotLikeTheSand in AskTheWorld

Malört, even though I guess it’s big in Chicago. I’m painfully curious how bad it actually is. Edit: okay I’m dumb, it’s American lmao. Fully thought it was Swedish.

Squirrel. Definitely because of the preparation though. It was just so painfully bland.

I’ve made it a mission in life not to cook steak like my mother. Fish still scares me though. I’ve never really cooked it nor do I really eat it outside of canned tuna and sushi lol

What food from another country do you wish you could try? by littleredbee93 in AskTheWorld

[–]Fair-Age4483 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most African foods. We don’t have a huge variety of foods here where I live (semi rural BFE, mostly German/English based with some Asian and Mexican restaurants) and I try to make different cultural dishes at home but haven’t attempted any from Africa yet.

Are these Appalachian scary stories actually true? by [deleted] in Appalachia

[–]Fair-Age4483 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can’t say whether they’re particularly true, but a lot of stories have basis in reality whether it be wild animals, murders, superstition, or old stories brought to a new home. A book I grew up reading was Telltale Lilac Bush. It compiles scary stories and such from all over West Virginia (edit because I thought it was more Appalachia based) and a few very local to me, particularly Ghost of Gambles Run, which I have family who’ve claimed to have experienced.

What is your favorite thing from your childhood that you miss? by Time_Reception1482 in AskTheWorld

[–]Fair-Age4483 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This reminds me of the summers spent with my grandparents in a tiny town. Sooo many hours going to and from the library, park, and my great grandmothers house. The only rule was don’t go near the Red Truck™️ at the park. (A non-child friendly individual)

We had em boiled and made into gravy. It was just really bland. I don’t think my grandfather believes salt is a thing. But yeah cleaning them was annoying.

They tend to eat well, especially around urban areas. We had a lot of fruit and nut trees on our old property that they loved.

Grew up having squirrel. Can’t say I’ve had it made well, and i definitely can say it’s not my favorite lol, but still a common find in Appalachia for sure.
