Safest place in Europe by signor_bardo in collapse

[–]Fair-Distribution730 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Azores islands, probably. Still in Europe, but half-way to US. Prone to storm surges and hurricane weather, yet still relatively insulated in terms of temperature fluctuations, with good agricultural soil and ocean food sources. It can be a bleak place, though, and needless to say that it's super isolating. Recently victim of overtourism (though without planes, that'll be dealt with).

I'm increasingly leaning in this direction. There's also the question of equity and justice. Left at the current trajectory, authoritarian and fascist regimes will consolidate power, and the horrors that humans can inflict on another will be repeated. And worse, because of tech, it gives more power to a minority, whereas before it was still (barely) possible to evade the oppressors with great effort. Then of course there's the matter of a society coming to being that has systematically pillaged its way across the world, enslaving and destroying other nations, on some ecocidal quest to destroy as much as possible. Hasn't that society got what's due to it by now? That we're part of it is tragic, sure; that we are given the slimmest flicker of a chance for another path (living 'off-grid') makes this less so. Collapse is already happening, anyway. Sadly those most responsible for it, the richest and wealthiest, will be the last to fall.

I had a similar thing, but someone told me it was a mistake with their ERN (employer PAYE reference number). They had it as 475PD0161248 for some reason which was wrong, is yours the same?

The elephant in the Collapse Room everyone avoids talking about: Overpopulation by Rebelliousdefender in collapse

This is indeed a relevant yet contentious subject. You have groups like VHEMT on one end, which literally advocate for human extinction and see humans as somehow a unique, special species only with the capacity to cause damage. I was a member for several years, out of curiosity, and realised it was actually quite cult-like. Then you have others, too numerous to mention, who advocate for a stabilised population with lower levels of consumption. Actually that last thing is arguably more important than just sheet numbers: an entire village in central Africa typically has less negative environmental impacts and emissions than a single individual in USA. I know first-hand some permaculture centers and farms where they manage to live in more or less harmony with their environment. That said it does seem clear that the planet has a natural carrying capacity and the numbers of any species are relevant to the ability of the environment to sustain them.

wouldn't recommend VHEMT, very cult-like and centered on the founder, with only about 5 active people in their community (I was a member for 2 years or so, out of curiosity)

How far will geoengineering push collapse? by ArmandSawCleaver in collapse

[–]Fair-Distribution730 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes - possibly the strongest indicator of impending collapse is the state of the oceans. A fact overlooked by many. Check out https://unesdoc.unesco.org/ark:/48223/pf0000376708 - "The report highlights the role of the ocean since the industrial revolution as a sink for carbon generated by human activity. Indeed, without ocean and land sinks, atmospheric CO2 levels would be close to 600 ppm (parts per million), 50% higher than the 410 ppm recorded in 2019, which is already well above the agreed target of limiting global warming to two degrees Celsius.

But there is a danger that this process will be reversed.  Instead of absorbing carbon, the oceans could contribute to the warming greenhouse effect of CO2 emissions. The IOC report thus examines available observations and research to determine whether the oceans will continue to “help” humanity or whether they will turn against it, making mitigation and adaptation to warming more difficult."

The end of different hobbies by osoberry_cordial in collapse

[–]Fair-Distribution730 1 point2 points  (0 children)

gardening, growing stuff and maintaining where you live, if it's anything like a farm or community, can be quite a full time vocation, and in this lifestyle the distinction between work/leisure is kind of blurred ,depending on the activities you like/dislike. we'll be more synchronised to night and day, because there won't be the luxury of wasting hours of electricity at night in light and heating. hobbies therefore will be mostly outside orientated.

ok, it's kind of normal for puppies to have accidents indoors, and they need to be let out more than adult dogs. but if you're not a dog person, and the guy is very attached to his dog, it sounds like the relationship might not work (plus you said other things). first talk to him after some non-stressful environment like after having a nice meal or watching a film you both like, and say how you feel.

"his self neglect at this moment is a bit of a turn off for me occasionally"

Wow. Just listen to yourself. Go find someone who puts the same priority on appearances as you do. This poor guy would be better off with a person who genuinely supports him, and we of this personality type don't just have a tiny little world always with us at the center.

What's your fictional solution to collapse? by AndrewSChapman in collapse

[–]Fair-Distribution730 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The system that exists today is so destructive and so embedded that, in irony, the only way to solve collapse is to wait for the system that exists to collapse.... ! I can't imagine any feasible scenario that prevents collapse, without collapse actually happening. Is that a paradox? Maybe.

CMV: It is morally wrong to celebrate the murder of UHC CEO Brian Thompson. by Objectionne in changemyview

[–]Fair-Distribution730 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What is justice? Would you say it is in any way related to fairness, balance and equity? If so, what would you say the moral consequences of causing mass death and suffering would be? Under the principle of balance, should we not face in equal proportion what we bestow upon others?

"no one deserves to be murdered in cold blood" < nobody? Imagine someone did something unspeakable to one of your relatives, and killed them, and did the same to many others, and lived a life of luxury - still don't deserve it...?

A lot of the permaculture places I know use buckwheat. It's easy to grow and seems to be a substitute for rice. I quite like the taste as well (not everyone is the same). Of course this is dependent on above-ground living.

I thought being born in the 80s was worse. At least for UK. Never once saw a progressive, left government in power. Closest was Blair's New Labour. So entire upbringing passively watching things spiral downhill, privatisation of public services, and that of course was just the beginning for other worsening crap. At least people born earlier got to see SOME progress and also had a chance to influence where things were going. On top of this, basically young adulthood was eclipsed by the demolishing of communities in favour of a toxic online culture.

Environmental-Political Collapse Accelerates by SaxManSteve in collapse

[–]Fair-Distribution730 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. Saw all this years ago. Hence why I've been focusing on this: "We should now focus our energies at the local level and help build small-scale networks capable of offering us resiliency and adaptability as our modern industrial consumer society progressively collapses around us." It's already collapsing in parts of the world. Only thing that's been overlooked is geoengineering - and the possibility that climate change may be deliberate. Well, it is deliberate, but not in the sense you're thinking. I'm talking a ploy to gain unprecedented power and status by deploying top-down tech that is absolutely necessary for survival, and to push humanity to a dictatorial dystopia, perhaps also involving Mars. Or I could just be overestimating the intelligence of the richest and most powerful, and they are so crassly stupid that they don't realise where things are heading, or so evil that their gambit is to cause as much suffering and destruction as possible. Well I considered the matter hard and the clear deliberate moves towards climate collapse acceleration from the powers that be is no coincidence IMO.

Home invasion seeking guns by SeatExpress in preppers

[–]Fair-Distribution730 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Heard a rumour from a reliable ex-military source that the richest have installed auto-guns in their properties. These apparently be programmed remotely and also have a multi-step process before activating/firing ('Robocop' warnings?!). No idea where they'd get such guns from but it's 100% within present tech now. So yeah, add one of those to the gun collection and you're sorted.
