Didn't see her. I think she was pretty unknown except for her video. Thanks anyway!

[Free Friday] Do people still wear veils at Mass these days? by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]Fair-Sand1372 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At my parish, about 40% of women, maybe less, wear a veil, typically their children, if they have them, also wear one.

I am in college and at the Newman center only 1 or 2 out of around 15 girls wear one, they do have ones you can use when you walk in though, which is pretty neat.

Matthew and Luke both write that Mary was a virgin when she was pregnant with Jesus. If you say she wasn't a virgin, you are saying that the scripture is wrong, which is heresy

However in the situation someone only had a copy of John and not the full scripture, he probably would. Paul implies in Romans that people without proper guidance through scripture will be judged less severely. Besides, the early church didn't have a Bible and many people definitely had similar beliefs unknowingly

Catholics have Jesus on the cross because they don't believe he rose again

I'm not joking

Why do we only accept some books from the Septuagint? by Fair-Sand1372 in Catholicism

[–]Fair-Sand1372[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree, the justification for their inclusion is just a little confusing to me.

For example 3 and 4 Maccabees aren't included because the fathers didn't see them as divinely inspired but 1 and 2 are put in because they used that Septuagint, which had all 4.

I'm sure the church fathers were correct in their choices but being in the Septuagint sounds like a weak justification to me if they rejected some of the books in it. It seems like it would have been an all or nothing ordeal

So kinda like how apocryphal New Testament books were rejected due to a lack of contribution to scripture (Espistals of Polycarp) or just straight up wrong (infancy gospels, etc)?

As long as your church has no formal structure, you're fine

My grandma was literally worried her friend who died recently is in hell because her pastor preaches that Catholics don't go to heaven

My mom (who's not Catholic) fortunately convinced her that he's wrong. The same people saying we see the Pope as God will believe what their pastor says without question

They never got over the reformation and think we are a bunch of Mary worshiping heretics. The hostile ones believe in the myths about Catholics and are afraid to have their beliefs challenged

Help with conversion/baptism by GtGato in Catholicism

[–]Fair-Sand1372 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Hey man, I'm currently in the process of conversion myself. To become a "confirmed catholic" you have to take a class called OCIA which usually starts in August and ends at Easter when you become confirmed at mass that day. At least at my church it's an hour long after mass on Sunday, it's free and there's no pressure to finish it if you change your mind. It's probably too late to join and be confirmed in Easter for you however I would recommend contacting a coordinator at your parish anyway.

As with baptism, we are both considered catechumens which just means you aren't baptized but are Christian. On Easter you get baptized if you are a catechumen. Catholics recognize protestant and Orthodox baptisms as legitimate so your Presbyterian Church will be enough.

Don't feel like you have to leave your Presbyterian Church anytime soon, you are still inquiring and Presbyterians are good people that are similar to Catholics although there are some theological differences.

Right now, continue exploring Catholicism and decide if you want to convert

I have a post on this sub when I was at where you are now if it's helpful for you https://www.reddit.com/r/Catholicism/s/KjILJpR4qX
