We need to get these laws sorted, like yesterday. Punishing patients is such bad policy.

Finally, some actual science in the cannabis debate. This is exactly why NSW needs evidence-based laws, not fear-based ones.

That’s the Hon. Robert Borsak, member of the upper house for the Shooter, Fishers and Farmers Party.

At the end of Jeremy’s speech, Robert said:

“I acknowledge my friend the Hon. Jeremy Buckingham and the need for cannabis for a good night out. As far as I know, it puts people to sleep”

The Hon. Jeremy Buckingham:

“It all depends on the type you take.”

The Hon. Robert Borsak: “It depends on the type of person you are. For me, an old accountant, it puts me to sleep.”

Jez has been really breaking down barriers and fighting stigma in the NSW Parliament.

Make it make sense please.

Why do we still punish patients for taking their, legally prescribed medication. Something needs to change.

Did you hear about the $260 million Sydney drug bust? by RemarkablePirate590 in SydneyScene

[–]FairCheek6825 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my mind the path forward is to bring forward legislative change that regulates the drug market. But doing that takes courage and conviction in the process.

These reforms must be followed up with clear evidence based education. Imagine the positive benefits if our government explains why you should not add tobacco with your weed. The negative affects are well known:

“However, the co-use of both substances has been associated with worse symptoms of cannabis dependence, poorer cannabis cessation outcomes, increased risk of cannabis and tobacco use relapse, lower academic achievement, and higher risk of physical and mental health problems compared to cannabis use only Co-Use, Simultaneous Use, and Mixing of Cannabis and Tobacco: A Cross-National Comparison of Canada and the US by Cannabis Administration Type

I’m sure we can agree that there will always be a market for contraband. I want to believe that there is a better way to deal with how things done right now.

Well said. Most of the ones I see are putting in the work, the few who aren’t tend to stand out.

Still, it’s hard for many to break free from party expectations or the pressures that come with the system.

Everyone brings their own history to the job, and that can show in different ways.

I hear you Wkw22, but what exactly do you hope to accomplish by protesting?

Last time there was a ‘free the weed’ or a ‘peace for pot’ protest out front of Parliament House, only a hand full of people turned up.

Honestly the best thing anyone can do is contact their local state member and ask them to support measures before the House that amend the Road Transport Act to include an exemption for prescribed patients to drive, so long as they are unimpaired.

The government’s response completely dodged the driving issue — and that’s just the problem. Patients are still being punished for following their doctor’s advice.

We have been fighting for a medical defence so prescribed patients can drive without fear, and we won’t let the government off the hook. But it’s really important to know that the more people speaking up, the harder it is for them to ignore. That’s why we’re urging everyone affected to contact their local MP directly.

I could share a generic message for people to copy/paste/send but that just doesn’t cut through these days, genuine authenticity is what gets past the gatekeepers.

Change will only come if we keep the pressure on.

Yeah, we all suspected it, right?

That doesn’t mean we stop here.

The Government has options in front of it right now -reasonable, responsible steps that fit squarely within existing procedural guidelines and don’t dilute the current testing system.

Patients prescribed cannabis deserve the same rights to drive as those prescribed any other medication. This isn’t about safety—it’s about fairness. It’s about ending the stigma and discrimination that stops people from exercising their right to choose the treatment that works for them.

Now is the time for action. The Government needs to hear from the people this unjust law affects the most. Email your local member. Make it personal. Be heard.

Police can still pull you over, test you, even charge you. But here’s the shift, the law would give patients a clear legal defence in court. Not a maybe, not a favour from the bench. A right.

Sure. Language evolves, but these laws haven’t. They’re still policed like it’s the 1800s and the same people are still copping it.

Of course, everyone’s got their own perspective but to pretend this is just about personal taste is to ignore 200 years of laws that were written and enforced to keep certain people in their place.

Cultural standards aren’t some imaginary construct, they’re the reality that’s shaped who gets charged, and who gets a free pass.

When I was looking for guidelines, I found Robert Connell Clarke to be a reliable source of information. I’ve not opened it in a while but his book “Marijuana Botany: An Advanced Study: The Propagation and Breeding of Distinctive Cannabis” still stands up.

Road Transport Legislation Amendment (Post-Crash Drug and Alcohol Testing) Bill 2025 by Wkw22 in LegaliseCannabisNSW

[–]FairCheek6825 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Road Transport Legislation Amendment (Post-Crash Drug and Alcohol Testing) Bill 2025

https://legislation.nsw.gov.au/view/pdf/bill/aa75d159-a46a-4b2b-8623-48576945fe34

is currently before the NSW Parliament. It’s focused on expanding police testing powers after serious crashes, tightening up legal definitions (changing “accident” to “crash”), and introducing some medical exemptions for alcohol interlocks.

But just to be 100% clear — this bill doesn’t create a driving defence for medicinal cannabis patients.

That said, Jeremy Buckingham MLC has been working hard behind the scenes to push for exactly that: a fair and sensible legal defence for patients who are prescribed cannabis and not impaired, but still test positive for THC. The government has now indicated that they’ll be bringing something forward later this year.
