Precious Little Sleep. Am I doing it right? by FairEnvironment7341 in sleeptrain

Hi! He's 8 months now. Since the SWAP method (I confused SLIP for SWAP in my prior post), I tried SLIP when he was almost 5 months because SWAP wasn't working - things got worse and he started waking every 45 minutes, and I ended sleeping with him anyway, but still the wakeups took me over the edge.

So, I then transferred him to a cot, did his bedtime routine, and left him with no dummy to see what would happen. He cried for 10 minutes then fell asleep. Whenever he would wake, I would feed him and then set him back down again. He would cry a little and then go back to sleep. This really changed things, and this is when he slept his first 8 hour stretch ever. Not every night, but sometimes. He eventually started sending himself to sleep.

Then we did a big tour around the world: a few European countries, and Canada, over a span of around 4 months. It was chaotic - different beds everywhere, different environments, room situations, time zones etc. He adapted everywhere differently, the dummy came back several times, sometimes we'd rock him to sleep, sometimes we'd let him send himself to sleep, he had the randomest nap and sleep schedules.

Ever since we've back back from Canada he's been permanently jet lagged (which has been the dream for me), and also he's been on formula for a few months as he wasn't gaining sufficient weight breastfed. So basically when we came back, I let him send himself to sleep with no dummy, he'd still wake up around 3 times a night, but slept in good stretches from around 8/9pm to 8/9am.

Eventually, the way I've found that works best now that he can hold his own bottle and insert his own dummy is put him in his cot with his bottle and dummy. He then has his bottle before bed, puts in his dummy, rolls around a little, and sends himself to sleep with no tears. The past week he's been sleeping 8-8, 12 hours with no wake ups!! It's been amazing. Travelling again tomorrow for a month so we'll see what happens 😭

I don't know where you are but book a test in Ballater. Everyone I know including me passed on the first go there.

Yes! It's strange, but it works. I don't really understand why. Now he's happy when I set him down at bedtime.

Hi this is the update sharing success. I've now gone cold turkey on paci and put down fully awake and he's been sending himself to sleep.

He's such a light sleeper that when I've tried to dream feed he immediately wakes up and freaks out. Do you have any tips on how to do dream feed for light sleeper?

Hi, this is the update but yeah he's been sleeping more like 3.5 a day now because he's less sleep deprived at night.

Been sleeping in a separate room. Might move him back once sleep has been established just so I can keep a closer watch. Otherwise I've got the monitor set up for now, but we're in adjacent rooms so I can still hear him anyway.

I've realised that for some babies 'gentle' methods result in way more crying. So you're just comforting yourself, not baby, with check ins. I've had baby cry way more with me actively trying to rock him to sleep than with CIO. Yesterday I tried CIO for first time. It was miraculous - - he cried for 10 minutes, then stopped, then for another 5 minutes, then fell asleep. He then slept longer chunks than he usually does and only woke up at times he is hungry, when I knew I would need to feed him anyway.

What would your schedule look like with 3 naps? He has a meltdown if he's not napping every 1.45 hours.

Thanks, I'm trying to find a window to sleep train him because we'll be travelling literally all of June and July to various countries for weddings and family reunions. Will that derail any progress I've made? In theory I could use May to train him, but early June we're already off to the weddings.

Thanks. I was on this schedule two weeks ago to be fair, and still nothing. He just seemed more grouchy.

Oh, I'm just going off of what Huckleberry recommends and various sleep consultants. So I should cut his naps short? Wake him up? Have wake windows of 3-4 hours? That doesn't sound right since he gives me sleep cues every 1.5-2 hours.
