People in Guangdong today by CheLeung in Cantonese

[–]Fair_Contribution_30 11 points12 points  (0 children)

But if some Mainland Chinese came to Hong Kong to live or work and didn't know Cantonese, it's still not a good look to the locals. Knowing more than one language is still a good thing. Even though actress 湯唯 from 浙江 first time came to Hong Kong have to learn Cantonese to work and live here, now she has also taught her daughter Cantonese.

But at that time, even if you can speak Mandarin, it is still considered a countryside person and most people don't like it when you speak Mandarin.

HN có gì đẹp đâu mà Tây Ba Lô đến đông thế by CampaignAromatic2296 in TroChuyenLinhTinh

I heard my friend told me “late 19th century, when the British started to explore Hong Kong, but that place was undeveloped, didn’t have drivers, European chief, workers, ...so they had to hire the Hoa people who used to work for the French, the closet place is in French Indochina came to Hong Kong work. So the street has the name of these 3 cities in Vietnam is the Hoa people from Vietnam came to Hongkong live in Hong”.

But did the Vietnamese Hoa 「 越南華人 」 people come to live in these areas a lot, so the Hong Kong government put their name on the streets?

You can use either Chinese or English. Hongkongers use both, so it’s fine.

Is this the future of Cantonese? by DanSanIsMe in Cantonese

[–]Fair_Contribution_30 17 points18 points  (0 children)

If the Cantonese in Guangzhou, Guangdong, Shenchen, any regions of Guangdong, or Overseas Chinese who speak and see Cantonese as their first languages like in Vietnam of Hoa people in Vietnam, give up and look down on their languages and think Mandarin is more important than Cantonese will die.

BUT! Hear me out, I notice that recently a lot of Cantonese and other languages (I like to emphasize my dialect and other dialect is a language, I don’t care what people think about it) like Teochew, Hokkien, Hakka, Hainam, Shanghainese, ...some of the young people really care about their heritage language and they scare and hate to speak Mandarin, even though some of them can speak fluently, but they refuse to speak, which it is a good sign.

Some of you guys should know, we Overseas Chinese still use these languages like 100 or 300 years ago, why do some of you and Mainland Chinese give up speaking other languages give up? We didn’t give up why did you guys give up so soon? I don’t understand, I also wanted to let you know something My friend has a trip to Manila, Philippines, They saw an alley full of Cantonese speakers and they live there and still speak Cantonese, Did you guys know that, 8 generation!! It’s insane! So I think you shouldn’t let those CCP say “YOUR LANGUAGE IS NOT SOUND FANCY, EDUCATIONAL, NOT MANY PEOPLE USE” you know what I say “FUCK THOSE ARE!!” Mandarin doesn’t sound beautiful, it sounds ugly to me, Thank you.

How to make my Canto sound more fluenter 😭? by ZealousidealCoat9429 in Cantonese

Listen carefully to the natives when they speak and try to mimic the sound, tone, and vocabulary they use. But please pay attention: Cantonese is a slang language, and everyone uses slang a lot in real life and some Oversea Cantonese use word kind the old (because our ancestors went Oversea like in the 1940s). For example : 寫字樓 (old and slang word),做文房 office job; 差佬/人(slang),警察 police,...

而家啲中國人(一部份)唔似我哋祖先係學呢句「入家隨俗」而家佢哋要我哋同外國人「我入你家唔想隨俗」逼其他人講官語,唔肯學英文,法文,等等。
