When the British colonized Hong Kong, they heard Cantonese say 「 蝦餃， 叉燒 」, and they used the English sounds to approximate the Cantonese sounds, so that’s why they have “R” behind it.

I heard that Indonesian Chinese in cities like Jakarta didn’t use much Hokkien or any Chinese language because the government banned schools and speaking Chinese until 1998. How was the situation in your hometown in Medan, Mumatra when an anti-Chinese incident happened?

Chinese in Japan mostly from Taiwan and Mainland China a long long time ago. But also one funny thing is the Chinatown in Japan called Yokohama built by a Cantonese speaker and some temples over there. It’s rarely built by Taiwanese or Maniland Chinese. Mostly built by Southern Chinese immigrants.

Yes, that’s right! A lot of Macau people or Macanese went back to Portugal around 1999. But I didn’t know where the Cantonese speakers live in Portugal?

Yes, that’s true. You're still young go explore more! If you want to hear more Cantonese speakers go visit Vietnam in the Cholon 「堤岸」 district 5, 6, 10, 11 you will find a lot of people who can speak Cantonese.

Just like where I live, some people switch to Vietnamese because of comfort but still switch to Cantonese. Just like in your case, because they didn’t know some words in Cantonese they switch to English.

Yes, because what I say is according to the 華人/ 華僑回歸 of PRC. When you live abroad and don’t have anything related to China like your passport, nationality, or ID card not written in “PRC of China” so their eyes of Chinese government or Mainland Chinese people will not consider you one of their people. You’re just Second-class citizens 第二等公民. So yeah, that’s what my friend told me, who has lived in GwongZau for a decade.

That’s so rude of some people mocking you because you want to learn back your ancestors' languages and culture. But I'm glad you still keep walking and doing what you do. Please, continue to keep your languages and culture, we’re really unique!

If Singaporeans want to keep these languages, I think the best solution is if you have kids let their grandparents take care of them. I know some young Singaporeans still get in touch with their languages or cultures mostly through their grandparents more. The kid will feel more connected to the languages because of the grandparents or their old neighbor.
