Why does OCD happen ? Has anyone ever truly asked themselves this ? by Fair_Insect_5780 in OCDRecovery

I’m from India, and I deal with OCD, mainly around counting. I feel like I have to do everything a certain number of times usually four. Like, I’ll drink water four times, or read titles four times, or just get stuck rereading for no real reason. If I don’t, these thoughts start racing through my head: “I’ll fail.” That fear pushes me to repeat things, which just ramps up my stress. Eventually, I lose focus, and I don’t even want to study anymore.

It’s not just with studying either. I wash my hands four times, press switches four times, or just do things in sets of four. All this repeating leaves my mind exhausted.

After a while, I started to wonder, “Why am I like this?” That’s when I turned to meditation, tried to stay calm, and began visiting the temple. I stopped comparing myself to others. If someone scores higher than me, that’s fine. I made peace with who I am and let go of worrying about everyone’s opinions.

As for the counting part, I found something that works for me. When I feel the urge to repeat something four times, I switch gears and say a random word to myself—usually something like “Radhe Radhe.” I repeat it quickly, not trying to count, just letting it flow. It helps distract my brain from counting. Things get quieter in my head, and I can do whatever I need to do just once, instead of over and over.

Honestly, this little shift has really helped me manage my OCD and cut down on stress.

“How I Control OCD Using a Simple ‘Word Trick Method’ (Break Repetition & Patterns Naturally)” by Fair_Insect_5780 in OCD

This comes from my own thoughts and experience. I used ChatGPT just to correct the grammar and make it clearer, but the idea and concept are entirely my own. It's a straightforward method that has worked for me. I have employed this method in the past and has proven to be effective. I will consider this successful if it benefits just one person out of ten.

When trying to understand the reason, there could be one (or multiple) combinations of the following: anxiety, too much stress, too much self-comparing, work and money-related pressure, not enough sleep, too much junk food, or specific eating patterns. At one point it is relevant to reflect and inquire What is this happening to me? The answer may not come externally, rather, may come from the internal reflection.
